Op shop after school pickings from a while back. Love cheap costume jewellery, crochet blankets and vintage linen! Started the tagged book on audio but always prefer a physical book.

An interestingly structured book. An Australian journalist and his friend a half Icelandic half Australian academic visit Iceland primarily to investigate Icelandic history and to record several sagas, Icelandic family tales in the style of Beowulf and Homer. But also a story about family, parental love, secrets and a sense of self and belonging.

Had my last exam for this semester! Yay! I later googled the text and it was part of the Egil's Saga, the teacher just exchanged the names 😆
And now for some relaxation 🍹

Buechersuechtling Is it good or bad❓But the teacher just exchanged the names❓I mean something in the text seems to have rung the bell with you otherwise you wouldn‘t have felt the need to google it. Did you get along with it well without knowing this or do you now have a feeling you missed to make a good point❓ 4y
Buechersuechtling Aber so oder so: Hoch die Hände‼️ Semesterende‼️? (Oder so ähnlich.) 4y
Deifio @Buechersuechtling I actually thought it was a different saga 🙈 and I translated it first and sent it off then googled it. I searched for a part with the kids names (because I thought the saga was about one of them) and that's why I found it 😆 4y

Buechersuechtling @Deifio But your misapprehension won‘t result in you failing the exam, will it❓😟 4y
Deifio @Buechersuechtling if the teacher keeps to her promise of only allowing 4 mistakes, then I'm pretty sure I'll fail. 🙈 The name of the saga was irrelevant anyway 4y
Buechersuechtling @Deifio That‘s rough. Only 4 mistakes. 😱 I keep my fingers crossed for you. 4y
Deifio @Buechersuechtling Thanks! ☺️ 4y

I enjoyed this mix of stories. I was not familiar with the sagas and hadn‘t realised their importance. Iceland has a culture of story-telling & poetry (& highest % of published authors in the world). The sagas are dry compared with (for example) the dramatic heroics of Greek myths - but I loved the sense of history & characters of Iceland. It‘s also part-travelogue with interesting digressions & anecdotes. A bit too long, but a fun immersive read.

Freespirit I haven't read this but I enjoyed Ghost Empire 5y
Abailliekaras @Freespirit that‘s good to hear- I have Ghost empire as well and am keen to read it. 😊 5y

Uncertain how to read this one because the culture that produced it is so alien to me. Many times characters jump at each other's throats - and I have no idea why. Is Egil meant to be honorable or moral in any way? Not sure.

Fairly difficult to follow due to the large numbers of characters (often with the same name) combined with the necessity of keeping everyone's familial relationships straight. I failed more than I succeeded.

"Then Egil spewed a torrent of vomit that gushed all over Arnold's face, filing his eyes and nostrils and mouth and pouring down his beard and chest. Arnold was close to choking, and when he managed to let out his breath, a jet of vomit gushed out with it."

rockpools Such a charmer! 6y
Settings @RachelO Apparently it's an intentional insult, but I missed what Armold did to Egil... 6y

This was at moments entertaining, charming and funny but at other times long winded and even a little dull. I enjoyed the combination of Icelandic sagas and family drama but it felt a bit too long.

"It's not the edge of the world for the people who live here." As an Aussie I relate to this!

AlaMich Even if Australia were the end of the world, you all would still be very lucky to get to live there (and I was very lucky to get to spend a month traveling there)!!! ❤️🇦🇺 6y
