I finished 2 more courses in my degree towards a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. This semester was intense. I felt sick some days (physically) and couldn't take care of myself because school NEVER stops! I am taking a semester off before I start my preceptorship (I can't emotionally- self-care - physically - think about working for free right now).

I am excited to use this time to read, regroup, and organize my home/life.

During this blog we turn the Authors Spotlight onto Lukas Klessig and his book “Words With My Father: A Bipolar Journey Through Turbulent Times”.

Words With My Father offers a gripping portrait of the evolution of a young man's mental illness and how it manifested into a dramatic and often dangerous existence through the turbulence of the Civil Rights, Peace and Conservation movements.

This one is a bit of a Romcom with a serious side . You have to pull for Emma, who worked hard on her sobriety & got that one year chip. Now she wants to begin dating again, she‘s not sure where to start. Life still throws a lot at her, her mother has kept a year long relationship on the qt , Emma‘s alcoholic father reaches out, after barely communicating for years , she doesn‘t know what to expect. There is dark humor & a lot of heart in this one.

Emma has reached one year of sobriety in AA. Instead of feeling like a completely different person she still has struggles like how to tell her coworkers she doesn‘t drink, how to handle her relationship with her alcoholic father,, and on top of it all how to even think about dating again. Yes there is a bit of romance and a bit of comedy but this is really the journey of a character finding confidence in herself in this new chapter of her life.

I couldn't rate this book. It's well written, and the brain energy theory sounds plausible. I am skeptical of some of the solutions to mental illness, particularly the ketogenic diet. I can't speak to its efficacy until I've tried it. The book describes the theory in scientific terms involving mitochondria and the metabolic system. It's is fascinating, and parts are over my uneducated head. I will have to do my own research. I have a project now!

This cover gave me Margo‘s GMP vibes so I jumped in without knowing more about the story. At the onset, we see Emma is a year sober after a crazy decade of sex, drugs and alcohol. Can she stay sober after earning that one year pin at AA? I really liked how this outlined just how easy it is for so many situations to pull an addict back to a dark place, how strong they have to be to overcome and how important community is to their success.

MallenNC Loved Margo so a book with those vibes sounds great 3mo
bthegood sounds good - stacked! 🙂 3mo
marleed @MallenNC @bthegood The vibes come more from the cover than the content. But both have a young likable FMC determined to rise above the path she was on. 3mo
MallenNC @marleed I definitely see it on the cover. That still sounds like it would work for me. Margo‘s determination was what really worked in MGMT. 3mo

This was a romcom with enough depth to make it feel like a slightly more serious book than many in the genre. Of course, true to the genre, there was a lot of humor and a modicum of spice. It follows Emma who has just completed a year of sobriety and is ready to move on with her life. She soon realizes that even sober, life can be hard. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. I really enjoyed it, as it was light but did not feel like fluff. 4/5 stars
