Another realist fiction about racism and skin color. Donte has a great family but he has trouble at school with racist administration, teachers, and students. He finds his way to the Boys and Girls Club and a fencing coach that helps him find himself in the sport. #BLM #bias #mixed-race #diversifyyourbookshelf

I have pretty #mixed feelings. The author has an amazing unique perspective and writes on a wide array of topics. I find her insight and personal experience with autoimmunity especially fascinating. But as an immunologist, I find some of her takes on the subject off-base. My favorite aspect was the illustrations by Xander Marro.

starlight97 You're an immunologist? How awesome 😍 7y

Mixedreader @Mariposa_Bookworm it's super comfy! I got the base at a thrift store and bought a new cushion, which made it affordable! 8y
Mariposa_Bookworm @Mixedreader That's a great idea! I'll have to try doing that! 8y

#riotgrams Yellow Covers! Loving Day is such a great book that addresses race, love, parenthood and identity in a way that is both unflinching and humorous. Also check out Sunil Yapa's The Heart is A Muscle the Size of a Fist! #diverselit #diversebooks #mixed

This book is breaking my heart. Deming, the main character, trying to adjust/not adjust to his new life. #family #cultureclash #mixed #mixedremixed #diversebooks #diverselit #theleavers #penbellwether #prizewinner

Third semester teaching this book, and just as I'm about to change the books, I think I'll miss this one. The story of a young mixed boy who falls prey to the negative messages in mainstream hiphop, but through the guidance of his father and literature, is able to find himself both within and outside of the culture that shaped him. #mixed #diverselit #mixedremixed #diversebooks

Go back to your teachers. The ones who do it best, who dedicated their work to the #wisdom of the #queer #womenofcolor experience. The ones who speak your truths. #CherrieMoraga reminds me how to draw strength from my voice, to choose myself first, to choose my writing first, to embrace the storm of my emotions and show the duality and interconnectedness of vulnerability and courage. #lagüera #mixed #lovinginthewaryears

When I was still a children's bookseller, my daughter-in-law's sister was looking for a good picture book for her kids. When this came in, I had to get it for her. Beautiful book. #marchintoreading #diversepicturebooks

Lindy Oooh, this reminds me of another great picture book that features a child of mixed heritage: 8y

Swing Time | Zadie Smith

The whole book feels like an observation, of friendship, of connection, of race and sociopolitical status; the narrator hovering above these situations, giving us insight, but with a sense of uncertainty that doesn't allow the reader to feel grounded. I liked it, though it felt about 100pgs too long. I skimmed towards the end. What did you think? #swingtime #zadiesmith #mixed

BellaBookNook Definitely a 2017 read for me. Can't wait! 8y
