So Litsy is throwing a fit about me posting a picture that had my review of this book. To summarize: beautiful writing, but didn‘t make sense with the story. Nor did the POV. So disappointing, and I DNF-ed at 68 pages. Only the 10th book I‘ve ever DNF-ed :(

I‘m already caught in the flurry of this one. I‘m listening to the audiobook and the actor is great, but I‘m still missing some stuff and having to go back. Hopefully I can get accustomed to the cadence of this book, because the story itself is riveting.

VERY much enjoyed this one. It‘s funny and true, and told simply. Totally recommend!

I couldn‘t figure out how I felt about this book until now. The story should‘ve stopped at what she was telling about integration. It was powerful, heartbreaking, and genuine.
And then dropped a toxic, unrealistic, and offensive lesbian romance. Not that interracial couples aren‘t a thing (pictured: me and my wife), but because the white girl still wasn‘t convinced black people are worthy like white people. Nope. Nope. Just no.

britt_brooke Ugh, that‘s frustrating! 😣 This is a great photo, though, so thanks for sharing. 6y

kissxxmyxxconverse @britt_brooke it sucks because the integration piece was SO GOOD. If it weren‘t for the shitty romance it‘d be a 5 star 6y

How is this not talked about more? This is a BLM-inspired graphic novel told from the perspective of the victim‘s ghost, who travels through recent history to other incidences of police brutality. It can be confusing at times, but it‘s so poignant.

This was beautifully written, but I think a lot of the nuance was lost on me due to the time period. I didn't get the draw of Carol, but I LOVED the language Therese used to describe her. All in all, I'm still glad I read it.

Tentatively a pick.
I've never been a skinny person. I consider myself to be a reasonably well-adjusted now, but I made enough bad decisions out of insecurity. The main character is not likable. Her insecurities warp her sense of self and how she related to others. I was never as bad as her, but I can see some of myself in her, and relate to the feelings that made her unbearable. This was a hard read, but I think it was beneficial for me to do so

LauraBeth You're lovely! 7y
LauraBrook You're beautiful! As a fellow not-skinny person, I have this book but have been hesitant to pick it up after hearing others say the same thing about the narrator. I'll read it eventually, but I'm not in a hurry! 7y
kissxxmyxxconverse Thanks, Lauras! Lol @LauraBrook it's definitely not one I'd recommend for everyone. And depending on where you are with self acceptance and love, it may or may not be a good read. But I'd love to see your thoughts if you do! And @LauraBeth thank you 😊 7y

One thing I really loved about this book was female friendship. So here's a pic of one of the most precious female friendships.
I also really loved how sex was discussed, with weight on consent and safety. I loved women helping women. I loved the little insights into being an Indian American. I loved the fluff.

This is a great fucking book. It's a slow burn story, that's pitched kind of as a romance, but honestly the romance wasn't even the best part. That would easily go to the main character's BLOG. This is an excellent way to illustrate how her experience as a non-American black immigrant to the US differs from American-born black people, and why it matters. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
