Faith, Hope and Carnage | Nick Cave, Sean O'Hagan

17-9 Oct 24 (audiobook)
Wonderful series of interviews between Cave and an Irish journalist/friend that took place over the COVID years.
They do discuss Nick‘s influences, music and his formative years in Australia, but mostly the discussion relates to his spiritual and religious views, work ethic and the grief experienced in the aftermath of the death of Arthur and, to a lesser extent, his mother and Anita Lane.
Very thought-provoking.

This was a beautiful series of conversations between Nick Cave and Sean O'Hagan. Cave openly shares challenging and thought provoking reflections on his life, grief, creativity, art and spirituality, I marked a *few* passages to revisit. 🙄😉

Nick Cave, a musician, is known for being part of a wild and chaotic band. As he‘s aged and had to go through the process of grieving the death of his teenage son, he is a changed man. He was always a seeker but now, to my mind, he‘s closer to that liminal space and understanding that love is the thread of life. Wonderful conversations with O‘Hagan. I read the last 1/3‘d of the book in one sitting and it felt especially spiritually potent. 🔽

Suet624 Sometimes it‘s a bit repetitive but it feels circular, as if you are meant to go round in these thoughts. Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers reviewed the book and it‘s the reason I purchased it. His review is spot on: https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cn6cY1mhIOc/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== (edited) 2y
MrsMalaprop It was very special. Glad you loved it too 🙏🥰 2y
BarbaraBB Great review. I am convinced 🩶 2y
Suet624 @BarbaraBB Thanks Barbara! Even with Flea‘s review, I was surprised by the depth of the conversations. 2y
Suet624 @MrsMalaprop love to find another person who enjoyed it. 😊💕 2y

The book that have I lined up for #sexdrugsandrocknroll for July is a collection of interviews with one of the greatest living patron saints of rock 'n roll. I might also squeeze in the recent book by Cave's frequent collaborator: Warren Ellis' Nina Simone's Gum. My tune is Bad Reputation by Joan Jett 🤘
#titlesandtunes @cinfhen @barbarabb

Cinfhen #GreatMinds !!!! Joan Jett is a legend #BadAss 2y
vivastory @Cinfhen Total #badass I even love her cover album & cover songs can be really hit & miss for me. Her version of Love Hurts is 🔥 2y
itsjustme40something She's my most bitter pill to swallow. Her music & talent always hits right in the feels...but she was an absolute POS to my mother. So I struggle to seperate the 2 2y

TrishB Cave has been splitting the fan base here recently Scott with his establishment moves when everybody loved him as not part of the establishment. It‘s been very interesting. 2y
vivastory @TrishB I'm not really up to date with the latest Cave news. Did he sign with a new label? 2y
TrishB No- he went to the Coronation and then said he was best mates with the Archbishop of Canterbury (apparently spiritual help with grief- fair enough). He‘s always been a rebel/anti establishment figure and to become part of the establishment is frowned on. I‘m not judging- just summarising 😁 2y
Cinfhen Love the insider‘s British gossip @TrishB 2y
vivastory @TrishB Interesting. I'm just glad he didn't go the way of Johnny Rotten 😬😬 2y
TrishB @Cinfhen - hubby is a big fan! 2y
TrishB Or Morrissey!! 2y
BarbaraBB Interesting @TrishB I didn‘t know either. I love your choice Scott! And I also loved Johny Rotten and Morrisey. Oh those #sexdrugsandrockandroll 🖤😎 2y
Suet624 I‘m reading this book right now. It‘s had me diving into videos online and Spotify. 2y
Suet624 @TrishB he has really moved into a spiritual space with his life and his music. Searching for the Divine. He wrote an album called the Seven Psalms which is his pleading to connect to spirit/God. I‘m all for it because I spend a lot of time doing the same, but I can imagine his fans from his earlier work are having trouble with it. The death of his son Arthur changed him. (He also had a second son who died more recently.) 2y
Suet624 Also, don‘t know if you‘ve read Dave Grohl‘s book but he has lovely things to say about Joan. 2y

Talk about random moments in time! Serendipity! This morning I saw Flea on IG talking about the power of this book. Then I saw that @MrsMalaprop had reviewed it positively. I called my small local bookstore. They had one copy left. Just so happens it was an autographed copy. What are the chances an autographed copy would be in a small store in Vermont? I was just shocked they even had the book! Very excited to read it.

AmyG NICE! 2y
MrsMalaprop That‘s very cool 😎👏. I had a similar experience in buying a copy of Nina Simone‘s Gum recently. I managed to buy @Rissreads a signed copy 😍. It was the last one on the shelf 🙌. 2y

#12booksof2022
Nick Cave's novel is a bit much. It is like a Southern Gothic boilermaker. I would not widely recommend it, unless you are a big Nick Cave fan or have a taste for the morbid/black sense of humor. Read in Nov, it was one of the more singular reading experiences of the year. He's def. a better musician than novelist, but I am curious to read some of his other books.
@andrew65

vivastory Nov. Honorable Mention: Yet another diamond of a novella by Sjon. This one more personal as it is loosely based upon a family member. Moonstone tells of Máni Steinn who spends his days in pursuit of “the love that dare not speak its name“ & at the cinemas in Reykjavik. Soon a plague strikes the city, altering everything he knows. I have now read 3 Sjon books & rec all of them. This felt the most topical & emotional. 2y
Andrew65 This cover has got me intrigued! 2y

Holy moly. This was sublime. So beautiful and moving and therapeutic and perfectly timed for me 🙏💔🥹.

Suet624 Flea just posted an amazing review of this on Instagram. Now I have to find the book. 2y
MrsMalaprop @Suet624 oh wow 🤩. It deserves to be read widely. I hope it speaks to you too 🙏 2y
Suet624 Nick Cave and deep discussions? It just has to speak to me. 😊 2y
MrsMalaprop @Suet624 Saw Flea‘s review 👏. Just finished Nina Simone‘s Gum by Warren Ellis too. Not quite in the same league, but worth a read. Having just seen Nick & Warren play live, I am enjoying immersing myself further into their psyches 😁. 2y
Suet624 I‘d really like to know more about Nina Simone. Watching any of her performances move me so much. 2y
