Pickpick

The story of Gertrude Ederle (Trudy) the first woman to swim the English Channel. A natural born swimmer, She loved the water. She was one of the first women to compete in the Olympics. She was certain she could swim across the Channel. With her second try she did it! Trudy suffered from loss of hearing in one ear and had lots of ear infections. She was shy and didn‘t like the limelight. The first chapters were slow, the rest were great. 4/5

Soubhiville Saw this available to watch on Disney streaming last night. I‘ll probably watch it at some point. Glad you enjoyed it! 2w

I just started reading this. I hope it will be as good as its reviews. The prologue and first couple of chapters didn‘t grab my attention. I‘m finding it more interesting with each new chapter.

This is a reread for me and an excellent palate cleanser after T.C. Boyle‘s Outside Looking In. I have a friend who lives out of state and we started “ buddy reads” about a year ago. This was her choice for Labor Day. I read this book when it was first published. It is just as good the second time around.

The recent Olympics & this Netflix series we are watching inspired my son to buy this book for us. In its chapters the author attempts to write about people & events “through the eyes of those who were part of the mighty drama, both locals and foreigners.” I am fascinated! #Olympics #Paris #Paris1944 #historymajorsinthehouse

#Olympics24 I know they are not book related but there are so many stories, so many moments of triumph and heartbreak. I love it all.

Please feel free to add your comments about the Olympics. I will post any comments with results under a spoiler so as not to ruin anything before you have a chance to watch.

Deblovestoread Watching Stephen Nedoroscik triumph on the pommel horse brought tears to my eyes. USA men‘s clinch a bronze medal 🙌🏼 4mo
Susanita I‘m enjoying the sports I don‘t typically watch otherwise: rugby, cycling, etc. 4mo
Kitta As a former gymnast myself, I‘m loving the gymnastics coverage! I could never dream of doing what they can but it‘s fantastic to watch. I even got up at 5:30 am on Sunday to catch it live. 4mo

Deblovestoread @Susanita Same! Been enjoying the equestrian events and water polo, too. 4mo
Deblovestoread @Kitta The gymnastics, swimming and diving are my favorites. 4mo
bthegood @Deblovestoread same here - mens gymnastics fantastic - watching gymnastics and swimming (men and women) - my favorite summer sports to watch and it's been fun this year to watch with grandson (who takes gymnastics class and is in swim lessons) - 🤸 4mo
Kitta Same! The diving is incredible. Especially the synchronized diving. And I like watching swimming too. For women‘s gymnastics, Rebeca Andrade (Brazil) is going to compete a new vault that‘s never been done at the Olympics before so keep an eye out for that! 4mo
MemoirsForMe I love it all! Gymnastics, swimming, cycling, fencing, beach volleyball. The kayak rafting was so cool! I love the camaraderie and when several countries and athletes win their first-ever medal. And yes, I‘ve been crying a lot of happy tears. 4mo
