quote
keithmalek

A full moon will rise in the part of the sky that is opposite sunset for that day. A full moon rises well south of east in midsummer and north of east in midwinter. It will set approximately opposite sunrise direction for that day also.

quote
keithmalek

Meteors have a relationship with time and direction. You are likely to see more shooting stars after midnight than before, because this is when your part of Earth is facing “forward“ as it moves in its orbit around the sun.

Noctilucy (n.) The shining of the moon.

quote
keithmalek

Yet for all its cultural luminescence, Polaris is only the forty-eighth brightest star in the sky. It stands out because it is the brightest star in its patch of the sky. If you see two stars of similar brightness close to each other you cannot be looking at the North Star, which always appears to be the only one of comparable brightness in its immediate vicinity.

quote
keithmalek

The southern side of painted objects fade faster than the northern side. I have seen this in varied locations, from footpath signs in France that had paled on one side, to bleached oil drums in the desert. Some things will show this solar effect more quickly than others. Over the course of a single day, moist dung will dry more quickly on its southern side.

quote
keithmalek

Growing numbers of solar panels on roofs will be ignored by most, but they offer help to observant navigators: There is not much point in a solar panel that faces north in the northern hemisphere, so, wherever possible, they face south.

For @dabbe here are my Kate and Pippa. Pippa is the tuxedo in the back and Kate is the tortie. They prefer naps to reading.

Help? Those of you who work with college students and new hires, who work in career development, and those who love learning… I have been charged with creating and delivering a 15 min program for college students on how to enhance “career-ready skills” — SOFT SKILLS! I can do this, I am confident in my ability to facilitate such, but need to pick a topic FAST. Suggestions? 🧐😬😃

Nutmegnc I‘m not sure of specifics but I LOVE George Couros and his book the Innovators Mindset is also great. This touches on those 21st century skills that students need in the coming job market. I bet you could pick a topic from there. You might also bring in the ISTE standards for students. 1y
BkClubCare @Nutmegnc TY, I have to work it all up tomorrow. Thank you 😊 1y
wanderinglynn Adam Grant has some fantastic topics, like knowing what you don‘t know. 1y

Bookwormjillk Big topic in my office right now. I agree with @wanderinglynn that Adam Grant is a good place to start. 1y
bthegood college students - big things they need work on : eye contact, engaged and active listening, hand shakes - 🙂 1y
BkClubCare @Bookwormjillk @wanderinglynn - Thank you! That first story in Think Again, about the fire fighters, has stayed with me. 🌟 1y
BkClubCare @bthegood - a presentation on how to be present without being scolding could be a challenge 😂 Active Listening activities might be a good way to go. 🙏 (edited) 1y
