Mr Warren's Profession | Sebastian Nothwell

Not finding this very engaging and wondering if I should bail. @Faranae do you have an opinion?

#DoubleSpin

Faranae I enjoyed it but it's definitely fluffy until it is very not fluffy. It does rely heavily on its tropes, and never quite breaks free of them, so if those early tropes don't work for you and hurt/comfort isn't your thing (which is very much Northwell's main catnip), it's probably best to bail. 5mo
willaful @Faranae I certainly can enjoy it but I don't think I wanna plow though to get there. Thanks for the input. 5mo
Faranae @willaful Happy to help! Also while I was doing yardwork, I thought about how Nothwell is definitely in the school of historical romance who aren't terribly concerned with getting the history right, so the characters' concerns are often much more reflective of what you'd see in a contemporary, unlike say, Aster Glenn Gray, who writes stuff exploring period identity. 5mo
willaful @Faranae I guess they can't all be AGG. 5mo

Tales from Blackthorn Briar | Sebastian Nothwell

I went from being unsure about Sebastian Nothwell‘s OAK KING HOLLY KING to enjoying it so much I downloaded the epilogue short story collection the moment I finished it. The stories herein are mostly longer novelettes, and the first two were great. It‘s always nice to get just a little more time with characters you like and want good things for.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I'm a sucker for a zombie book. This series is a bit different. The "unnaturals" live relatively peacefully amongst the humans, and the zombie is the protagonist. This one (book 2) was quirky and fun and sort of sweet.

Book 2/2 finished for #20in4 (yay - still hoping to finish an arc today)
@Andrew65

RamsFan1963 I've got books 3 & 4 of this series that I need to get around to soon, maybe in October for Halloween, since I'm not a straight horror book reader. 2y
Traci1 @RamsFan1963 I may wait til then for the next ones too. They'd be good spooky choices. 2y

Well, my #FRC2023 seems to be shaping up into “gay historical romance, punctuated by non-fiction“. I was alternating between exhausted and feverish the last couple weeks and ended up indulging in more binge reading. The tagged book, and the prior book (“Mr. Warren's Profession“) were a rare case of the StoryGraph “see similar“ button finding me a book I really enjoyed. My only complaint about “Masters in this Hall“ was the handling of concussion.

willaful Ideally, my FRC will as well. 3y
Faranae @willaful I'm looking forward to it! Between you and shanaqui, somehow I'm reading a lot of gay romance this year?! 3y
willaful mwahaha, we have another one! 😈 3y

22/150 After reading Later, this is a different, much funnier view of ghosts and the undead. Dan Shamble, Zombie PI is up to his neck in cases involving golem slavery, stolen hearts from zombies, housing discrimination for a mixed couple (he's a vampire, she's a werewolf), and stopping an evil senator from making being an unnatural illegal. Funny, light hearted mystery.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description or reason for wanting to read the book. Some are old and some will be new. Don't judge me - I have a lot of books.
Day 167

I am posting series books together instead of one post for each book.
