I feel like I have read this book before, but if I have, it was before 2011 when I joined Goodreads and started tracking my books. The sticker was on my bedroom floor and I was too lazy to get a proper bookmark [even though I have a million] & the juxtaposition of the book title/sticker made me smile 😂😈💀

I found this book compelling and readable full of flawed, but relatable characters. OK, there‘s one character who I think is supposed to be sympathetic but I absolutely couldn‘t stand her. A lot of misery in this story, but you know from the beginning how it‘s going to end and the book is about how everything gets there.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Yes, a very depressing book! 1w

The storytelling is compelling and genuine, featuring a strong female protagonist who navigates challenges with poise and confidence. It's evident that the author conducted thorough research and every detail is grounded in real events.

MacLeod is the master of the short story. Period. I loved this collection. Nothing more to be said really. #CanLit

Here's pic 2/3 of my epic used book sale haul. Mostly lit fic and canlit. I'm excited for all of it tbh but especially the Helen Humphreys.
And yes, this does totally blow my tbr reduction goals out of the water but who cares. #noregrets

4.5⭐️ I really enjoyed this book (liked it so much that I spoke for 15 minutes on the book on my YouTube channel [mjreadings on YouTube if you‘re interested]). The only thing that didn‘t make it a 5⭐️ was that it was slow paced in the beginning. I read it about 10+ years ago for another #bookclub and reading it again now blew me away once again. #2025 #historicalfiction #fiction #africanamerican

melissajayne The book is published in the United States under the title Someone Knows My Name. 4mo

“I remember wondering, within a year or two of taking my first steps, why only men sat to drink tea and converse, and why women were always busy. I reasoned that men were weak and needed rest.”
