Mehso-so

Another one I had such higher hopes for after loving the debut novel A Woman is No Man.
In some ways this was great because the MC was going through a terrible time with anxiety and depression which I felt was done well but it‘s not fun to spend an entire novel in the head of a person suffering so much. Was it intentionally miserable? Also, the sections with connection to the past was too thin, though I did like the ending.

batsy I found it a so-so read, too. Maybe my expectations were too high. It just felt drawn out and tedious in places. 10mo
Megabooks Yes, this was a real #sophomoreslump! 9mo

Eh. I didn‘t enjoy this nearly as much as Miracle Creek. I think most of it was the young, overeager narrator. But I do appreciate Kim‘s thorough research! Minor #SophomoreSlump

Mia‘s dad has gone missing, and her brother, who has nonverbal autism and Angelman Syndrome, is the main suspect. Kim examines how the justice system treats disabled children and how this impacts the family during the pandemic. #botm

Cinfhen This was a pan for me. Really disappointing 😝 1y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I‘ll still read her third book but probably #BorrowNotBuy 1y
Cinfhen Yeah, she‘s not a bad writer….you‘re right - definitely a #SophomoreSlump 1y
LiteraryinPA That‘s so interesting- I really liked it! But I can see how the narration style would rub some people the wrong way. @Cinfhen (edited) 1y

Panpan

I did not think I‘d pan a Maggie O book, but this is a true #SophomoreSlump in her otherwise fantastic career. Characters with no depth. Motivations that don‘t make any sense. Several silly highly dramatic fainting spells. 🙄🙄 I think the best move of her career was to go from romance to historical fiction.

Shoutout to this copy that‘s been in my library‘s catalog since June 11, 2003, which is amazing because my library has a lot of turnover!

Megabooks I only have one more book of hers that I‘ve never read, and I‘m not sure whether I‘ll get to it for #AuthorAMonth or not. @Soubhiville 1y
Soubhiville I read Esme this month and liked it 🙂 1y
JuniperWilde @Megabooks I liked Vanishing Act a lot. I read it many yrs ago. 1y

BarbaraBB I had never heard of this one! Guess I won‘t read it. Also, Esme was my first O‘Farrell. It‘s good! 1y
Cinfhen TOTALLY agree…. I MUCH prefer her HF - definitely her niche 1y
lynneamch I've loved everything else Maggie, but have to agree this just didn't do anything for me. Cant bring myself to pan her, but I'd tell anyone "don't bother." 10mo

Not as consistently readable as the first one; plenty of great segments split up between more sloggy bits. Definitely in for the final volume, though. #sophomoreslump
