Pickpick

“The encumbering elements of our histories must be spoken aloud, at least in the caverns of our brains, if we wish for them to take up wings.” This is a beautifully written story. Small and quiet, and yet so very heavy. It left me feeling a little bit lonely. I think Zorrie will stay with me for a while.
Another one from @DebinHawaii and #AuldLangSyne. I am really enjoying this list. @monalyisha

TheBookHippie We loved this so very much #SundayBuddyRead last year. 4d
DebinHawaii So glad you liked it—it was just so quietly beautiful. 💚 As @TheBookHippie said, it made the top books lists of most of our #SundayBuddyReads group. Just finished another from your list that I need to write a review on. Another winner. 4d

#ReadAway2024

Enthusiastic pick for this historical fiction based on the real-life Alice Diamond & The Forty Elephants, an all female gang of thieves or “collectors” who robbed high-end department stores & the wealthy society of Roaring Twenties London. I‘m so glad this was our #SundayBuddyReads pick for August because I hadn‘t heard of this book before & it was fascinating & thrilling with strong female characters. One of my favorites for 2024!

Meh weather and a never ending cold may be a blessing in disguise because I am going to power through ( serious skimming happening ) this first section for #sundaybuddyreads and then we shall see ( the initial characters, Molly and Anna, Richard and Tommy - I can‘t stand them)

quietlycuriouskate "Powering through" is right! I am scowl-reading; pretty much fed up with all the characters already. ? 13mo
AmyG Yep. Serious skimming. Hope you feel better soon. 13mo
mcctrish @quietlycuriouskate I am rage reading 🤣🤣 13mo

mcctrish Thank you @AmyG every time I think I‘m on the mend this bloody cold knocks me down again, I‘m so fed up but maybe this time I will finally kick it out of my system ( kill it with this book 🤔) 13mo
AmyG Ha! The book can put you to sleep and you will get more rest. 13mo

Read with #sundaybuddyreads and I just wish I‘d managed a print copy. I‘m doing so little reading right now, school continues to kick my ass and just really need to hold a print copy in my hands to get that reading high I need to survive life 🤷🏻‍♀️ that and this ebook copy was not ff track of the print version so it was lost for a good 2 weeks. Otherwise MS is the Master of suspense and she keeps you guessing #ohwhatawickedwebweweave

Next up for #sundaybuddyreads I will admit I‘m struggling 🤦🏻‍♀️ Melissa‘s chapter is full of complaints ( teenage daughter, work, ex-husband, house falling apart) and I‘m getting ready for school ( setting up a classroom and teaching day 1 after supplying for 20+ years) and helping my youngest unpack from summer job and pack for uni tomorrow. I feel like I might have an anxiety attack - too much caffeine?! 🤔

Prairiegirl_reading It‘s a bit cringey so far! I hope all is going well for you, sounds like you have A LOT going on. 2y
mcctrish @Prairiegirl_reading my oldest just arrived home from his camp job ( altho‘ his lasts until the end of October ) and he brought all of his clothes home “so he can sort them” and I might start crying because if I thought my house looked like a hoarder‘s who had thrown up, it now looks like a tsunami hit that. My husband does not understand why I‘m losing my shit but he‘s had someone picking up after him for 100 years 2y
Prairiegirl_reading I hope today is better! 🤗 2y

TheBookHippie 😅😵‍💫👀 I feel too old for the book 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 2y
TheBookHippie Hope today is a good day! 2y
mcctrish @Prairiegirl_reading everything we needed to fit in the van did and we got a great delivery window for the new bed that is being delivered at the apartment so the crack of dawn departure wasn‘t necessary ( or attainable ) the universe felt my pain so today is better 🥰 thank you 2y
mcctrish @TheBookHippie maybe that‘s it, I‘m too old 🤣🤣 I just want to scream at everyone in the book so far. Today is a new day and so far so good 😊 2y
Cuilin I feel you, setting up a classroom, taking both daughters to uni, one yesterday, next tomorrow in two different cities. Studying for an exam as well I‘m frazzled 🥴 my house 💣 2y
mcctrish Oh @Cuilin that is so much 🤯 May the odds be in your favour with all the things 2y

Panpan

The only good part of this book is talking about it on Sundays #sundaybuddyread thankful I‘m finished

Litsi Don‘t know why this book is such a big deal. Soooo boring IMHO. 2y
batsy I initially thought this might be a pick, then I thought it would be a so-so but now that I'm pages away from the end it might end up a pan, too 😆 So true about the discussions, though! 🙌🏾 2y
mcctrish @Litsi some clever people in the #sundaybuddyreads group explained why the book has important things to say re:end of Victorian Era and commenting on industry etc.. but I can‘t get over how much of Lawrence‘s crap overshadows it ( racism, anti-semitism, anti-feminism - actually it‘s like he hates women ) 2y

mcctrish @batsy I felt the same way but at the end the highlights for me were sundays and how much I dislike Lawrence‘s writing style so 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻 all the thumbs go down 🤣 2y
Litsi For the record, I am a classics reader But while this was a ground breaker, from a literary perspective it has limited value 2y
TheBookHippie I loved discussing it! 2y
mcctrish @TheBookHippie ❤️❤️ I love my Sundays 2y

I‘ve accepted an unexpected & last minute teaching gig for September, I will be in a grade 5 class so my reading life may be not as prolific as usual. My goals will be Peony in Love with #literarycrew , The Most likely Club with #sundaybuddyreads finishing Vanity Fair with #pemberlittens and starting the next one ( I forget the title) Montana Sky with ? ( I am having a moment here) and hopefully the next inspector Gamache and an audio or two 🤞🏻

I‘m reading on my kindle for #sundaybuddyreads so far it‘s depressing on every level. Was this a scandal when it came out? It seems like all references to it allude to that. D H Lawrence was a bit of a woman‘s sexual awakening kind of author though, yes?

SamAnne It is making me cringe on nearly every page. 2y
mcctrish @SamAnne I‘m not wondering why I never read it before this 😆 2y
TheBookHippie Depends which version you read -but yes banned and outlawed 😵‍💫😅 2y

mcctrish @TheBookHippie I figure the part about Connie persevering to reach her own satisfaction and Mick grousing about having to grit his teeth while he waited probably put a few people in a tizzy 2y
batsy Am I the only one liking it so far? 😅 It's kind of fascinating to me as a snapshot about the kind of conversations people had at the time about these things. 2y
mcctrish @batsy I‘m ( unfortunately) reading 2 classics right now and Vanity Fair is much more Fun 🤣 2y
batsy @mcctrish Ahaha! I admire you juggling both of these. I still haven't read VF and I must get to it soon. 2y
