The Thin Man | Dashiell Hammett
post image

Everyone here was right—this movie is a gem. *This* is the pinnacle of noir & screwball comedy & perfect for the holidays since it begins on Christmas Eve & ends on NYE. Shockingly the book that it's based on pales in comparison #themoviewasbetter

William Powell & Myrna Loy are delightful, but a special shoutout to the dog that plays Asta 😆

mabell Yay!!! So glad you enjoyed it! It‘s our tradition to watch The Thin Man on Christmas and After the Thin Man on New Year‘s (it takes place on NYE) 😊 2y
LeahBergen I just knew you‘d love Asta! 😆 2y
batsy @mabell Ooo! Thank you for that. Now I know what my NY plans are 😁 2y

batsy @LeahBergen Apparently originally named Skippy! An absolute legend of the film world 🐶❤️ 2y
TieDyeDude One of my all time favorites! I own the book, but I've been worried it wouldn't live up to the film. Sounds like I'll skip the read 😁 2y
Jess_Read_This Agree! 😁 It‘s one of my favorites too! I tried to read the book after watching the movie but couldn‘t finish it. 2y
batsy @TieDyeDude I'm not sure if the book might improve if you can visualise it with the movie characters? 😁 But yes, such a great movie! 2y
batsy @Jess_Read_This Nice! ❤️ I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who struggled with the book 🙂 2y
Suet624 I‘ve never watched it. Now I must! 2y
batsy @Suet624 It's such good fun! And the dog! 😍 2y
Bookwomble The sequels are fantastic, too. I bought a box set of the movies a few years (decades? 🤔) ago, and they became firm favourites with my kids. 2y

Mehso-so

One of those rare occasions where #themoviewasbetter . There's intriguing and intricate ideas aplenty here but, much as I enjoy thinking, more than that I value being moved by language, character, narrative... to pick up and respond to relational sonar, if you will. Sadly, from that point of view, this collection is as mute as one of his golems. With scant opportunity for emotional engagement these aren't stories so much as thought experiments.

Weaponxgirl The film was amazing! I've been putting off the book as I wasn't sure I could hack it if it was more emotional than the film so thank you for this review. 6y

First thing that popped into my head for today's prompt? The Lisbon #Sisters.
Although this book is considered a cult classic, it was definitely a case of #themoviewasbetter for me. Still, I think the "outside looking in" perspective of the book is brilliant.

CrowCAH Haven‘t read this one, but read the Marriage Plot, by Eugenides. 6y
LeahBergen I loved the movie when I saw it years ago (and I should really give this a read). 6y

Daniel Day Lewis is retiring from acting?? Sad news for movie fans....Here's an image from one of my favorite scenes from my favorite movie of his, Last of the Mohicans. I've never read the book but my mom has, and she says #themoviewasbetter.

"I will find you!" *Swoons*

Bailedbailed

For today's theme #weirdbooks I chose Palo Alto. It was way too weird/gross for me and the characters are butt heads. I bailed ✌🏻️#somethingforsept #themoviewasbetter 🤗

haileybean I couldn't get interested in these either. 8y
kylienoele @haileyhugsbooks I'm glad I'm not the only one!! 8y
