Shiloh: A Novel | Shelby Foote
post image

“The sky had cleared, the clouds raveled to tatters, and at four oclock the sun broke through, silver on the bright green of grass and leaves and golden on the puddles in the road; all down the column men quickened the step, smiling in the sudden burst of gold and silver weather.“

I also picked up some new books at the museum yesterday. I‘ve been trying to track down Combee for the last few months. I was so excited when I saw it yesterday. The other book is about the shooting at the church & Charleston & the aftermath.

TheBookHippie Oh!!! Good choices!!!! @Chrissyreadit look!!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️ 4mo
Chrissyreadit Wow!!! I cannot fathom what the depth of Harriet Tubmans brilliance is! Everytime i learn something new about her I‘m in awe!!! 4mo
ncsufoxes @Chrissyreadit I‘ve been trying to find Combee for a few months, it‘s been sold out everywhere. I was so excited when I saw it yesterday. Today we went to a bookstore in downtown Charleston & they had several copies of the book & signed 😩. So I was a little sad that I don‘t have a signed copy. I know the basic facts about Harriet Tubman, I‘m excited to learn more. 4mo

Great story of two brothers from Massachusetts who end up at Gettysburg during Civil War. Has poetic parts but also very gritty. Map is of second day of 3.

I found this very interesting. McPherson did an excellent job at providing a good overview of the political, social, economic, and other factors that led to the Civil War. He also did a good job providing a broad overview of the Civil War, as well as the different dynamics working in both the Union and Confederacy. Definitely worth reading.

The Civil War at Sea | Craig L. Symonds
Mehso-so

The book looks at 3 distinct areas: commerce raiding and blockaders, river combat, and assaults on Confederate ports. The info on the development of monitors and weaponry is excellent. The riverine aspect is uninspired. The blockade running is interesting. The success of assaults on ports was dependent on coordination and cooperation. Overall, in the debate over the utility of blockades, he waffles and delivers a highly qualified support.

Running away from home was a mixed bag, both in terms of the trip itself and what I was running away from, but the week had many joys.
1. I visited a park that commemorates Williamsburg during the Peninsula Campaign.
2. I had occasion to use this lovely candle.
3. Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde spoke truth to power.
4. Politics Girl was 🔥this week.
5. Greek food for lunch was delicious.

Next up for reading. At around 870 pages, it's likely going to take a while to get through.

Union Cavalryman 1861-65 | Philip Katcher

Pickpick

I recently delved into "Union Cavalry: 1861-65" by Philip Katcher and Richard Hook, and I must say, it's a phenomenal contribution to the Warrior Series by Osprey Publishing. As someone with a keen interest in military history, I found this book to be a well-researched and captivating exploration of the pivotal role the Union Cavalry played during the Civil War.
