Crooked Seeds: A Novel | Karen Jennings

Chose this bleak but enjoyable read because it is on this years #womensprizelonglist. The MC is an almost wholly unlikeable character fixated on the fact that life has shortchanged her at every turn. She has to reckon with some of the trauma of her past when police discover bodies at her family‘s former house.

It‘s hard to say I enjoyed this book because it is so full of hurt, so full of ordinary human failings. It‘s raw and unflinching in its portrayal of a family who experience a horrific event, going back to the beginning and thru to the other side. 4.5 🌟

#WomensPrizeLonglist.

BarbaraBB Great review. An impressive book indeed. 1y

Tough subject matter but I loved this book so much. I loved how it spoke to chaos and trauma in your growing up years. I loved the journey to growth the MC made. It will stay with me. 5 🌟

A bit of a disappointment to have this be my last 2023 long list read. It was fine but not memorable and compared to the other books on the list not nearly as creative or well crafted - though not as bad as Pod!
It felt as if the author was trying too hard to find cute silly ideas to bring in, and overall the atmosphere made me feel a bit grimy, but nowhere near as visceral as Children of Paradise.

I am a bit disappointed? There are many, many characters. If you are not familiar with the story this may be hard to follow. I had to remind myself a few times about who was who and how we got here. Overall I think Haynes was trying to do too much, but that might have been my own expectations not being met for what this book is. I went in looking for Medusa's story from her perspective - along the lines of Circe but you are thrown from story 👇

ChaoticMissAdventures Line and different characters POV so often very little of the book is this core idea of Medusa's own story, which was a bummer because one of my favorite parts of this was the relationship between her and her sisters. L 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures I will say I did also love the hilarity of Athene and Hermes "helping" Perseus. Their relationship triangle was a delight. If those two storylines had been more laser focused I think I would have liked this incredibly fast paced read. 2y
SamAnne Great review. This has been on my list. 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures @SamAnne if you like fast past Greek mythology it is fun! I read it for the #WomensPrizeLongList. 2y

This is one I am going to have to ruminate over for a bit. It makes me want to take a shower, sort of like how I felt after watching Sid And Nancy. The drugs and drinking and grime is so well described I personally feel gross. Which I guess from a writing standpoint is the author doing a wonderful job. The narration is cold, and the characters are distinct but not in depth. I think the book did what the author set out to do

ChaoticMissAdventures Overall I didn't enjoy the book, and I struggled to finish it because I just didn't want to live in the world. I do see the talent of the author, and see why it was long listed but I don't think it should get shortlisted. 2y

Paradise is one of this city‘s oldest cinemas, and its employees are really something. They have created rules for themselves at the cinema; watching movies after hours, taking whatever drugs they find and keeping jewelry. Into this comes new employee Holly who finds it hard to be accepted.

A book about fitting in, making new friends and how fast life can change.

4th book read from the #WomensPrizeLonglist
