When Holly applies for a job at the Paradise - one of the city's oldest cinemas, squashed into the ground floor of a block of flats - she thinks it will be like any other shift work. She cleans toilets, sweeps popcorn, avoids the belligerent old owner, Iris, and is ignored by her aloof but tight-knit colleagues who seem as much a part of the building as its fraying carpets and endless dirt. Dreadful, lonely weeks pass while she longs for their approval, a silent voyeur. So when she finally gains the trust of this cryptic band of oddballs, Holly transforms from silent drudge to rebellious insider and gradually she too becomes part of the Paradise - unearthing its secrets, learning its history and haunting its corridors after hours with the other ushers. It is no surprise when violence strikes, tempers change and the group, eyes still affixed to the screen, starts to rapidly go awry...

Such an intriguing little book. In it, Holly (apparently an assumed name) gets a job at the city‘s oldest cinema. Initially, the depiction of her loneliness is so powerful I almost wanted to stop reading. Then she settles in with the motley crew as things at the cinema start changing. This felt like a scathing critique of modern disposable culture. It really got under my skin.

Cinfhen I would have loved to seen this book advance. I loved it 😊 12mo
jlhammar Yes to all of that! I felt the same. 12mo
TheKidUpstairs I think once the paperback is out I'll order this from Blackwell's. It really intrigues me! 12mo

This is one I am going to have to ruminate over for a bit. It makes me want to take a shower, sort of like how I felt after watching Sid And Nancy. The drugs and drinking and grime is so well described I personally feel gross. Which I guess from a writing standpoint is the author doing a wonderful job. The narration is cold, and the characters are distinct but not in depth. I think the book did what the author set out to do

ChaoticMissAdventures Overall I didn't enjoy the book, and I struggled to finish it because I just didn't want to live in the world. I do see the talent of the author, and see why it was long listed but I don't think it should get shortlisted. 12mo

Grudova, in her #WomensPrize interview, says “I find gross things immensely fun to write.” Well, she must have had an absolute blast writing this book. Very strange and extremely disgusting (I‘m really selling it, right?), but there was just something about it that grabbed me. I didn‘t want to put it down. And the whole CinemaTown thing was just too good 😂 Not sure yet if it will make my shortlist, but glad I read it.

ChaoticMissAdventures I am starting this today! 12mo
jlhammar @ChaoticMissAdventures Can‘t wait to hear what you think! 12mo
squirrelbrain Yes, it was all rather grubby wasn‘t it?! Great review! 12mo
Cinfhen This one is in my top 5 - I hope it makes the shortlist 🙏🏻 12mo

Paradise is one of this city‘s oldest cinemas, and its employees are really something. They have created rules for themselves at the cinema; watching movies after hours, taking whatever drugs they find and keeping jewelry. Into this comes new employee Holly who finds it hard to be accepted.

A book about fitting in, making new friends and how fast life can change.

4th book read from the #WomensPrizeLonglist

Weird and quirky with a little too many mentions of bodily fluids for me. I did enjoy the strangeness and it was a very quick listen although I didn‘t get the film references as I‘m no fan
This is book number 7 I have read from the women‘s prize and not one of my favourites

ChaoticMissAdventures I feel like the theme for the prize this year was weird. I don't know how much it is working for me. 13mo
Cazxxx @ChaoticMissAdventures I have enjoyed most of what I‘ve read other than glory which I read last year and hated. This one was just ok but nothing special. Have you liked any of the longlist so far? 13mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @Cazxxx I am finishing Glory today, and not enjoying it. it is my 6th book on the long list. I really loved Homesick, and Cursed Bread, they are my favorites so far. The only one I had picked up before the list came out was Marriage Portrait - I read it as an ARC because I love O'Farrell, but it is my least favorite of her books. 13mo
Cazxxx I struggled to get through glory and it‘s one of my least favourite books ever. I‘m interested in cursed bread and possibly the marriage portrait if the online library get them in. I really liked Demon Copperhead, Trespasses and stone blind. I‘m most excited for The bandit queens which is on hold and fire rush which I‘m hoping the library will have soon 😊 12mo

The Ghoul
Directed by T. Hayes Hunter
1933
[pictured]

There was a Paradise legend that the original owner had built a second screen, a small one, somewhere hidden where he and his friends would watch more risqué films, often in the company of prostitutes.

It wasn't long after I started watching all of Pasolini's films that Lydia suggested we should all do another search for 'The Second Screen'.

Suet624 Creepy photo. 🤪😳 13mo

I‘m not making a concerted effort to read the #WomensPrize longlist because the road to hell is paved with good intentions and all that jazz, but I am happy I scooped this one up for 99p. It‘s a bit strange and the characters are a lot quirky, but it really worked for me. Right book, right time.

squirrelbrain I liked this but didn‘t love it - a bit *too* weird for me. 13mo
MicheleinPhilly @squirrelbrain I‘ve been in a weird head space lately so it worked for me in a way I suspect it wouldn‘t at another time. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 13mo
TrishB You‘re firing off these reviews 😁 I got this one for 99p too. I shall probably read in 3 years. 13mo
sarahbarnes I looked for this one at the library because it sounds intriguing-maybe I‘ll have to look for a deal like this so I can read it. 13mo

A strange book. Prose was alright, but not spectacular. The plot was grim but barely there. The characters were really strange but distant. Even the MC/narrator is still mostly unknown to the reader at the end of the book. Full of movie references, many of which I probably didn't get. But I just can't quite stop thinking about it. So it's a pick, kinda. Would love to discuss it with a film buff.
#WomensPrize 2023 #longlist

TrishB I definitely won‘t get the film references! 13mo
squirrelbrain I tried looking up some of the films but couldn‘t get into enough detail to figure out any analogies or similarities to the chapters. 🤷‍♀️ 13mo
Leniverse @TrishB @squirrelbrain I got some of the obvious references, but I also found an error! They said that the Boris Karloff Frankenstein movie was from 1953, but it's actually from 1935. The line editor messed up there! The characters would be appalled. 😂 13mo
squirrelbrain Oh dear, that‘s a transposition error, as we say in the accounting world…! 😴🤣 13mo

I can appreciate the writing in this book, from the #womensprize long list, but the subject matter was all just a bit..well..grubby for me. The MC starts work at an indie cinema that soon gets bought by a multiplex and the behaviour of her workmates matches the filthy carpets, the overflowing toilets, and the recycled popcorn of the cinema. Be prepared for lots of bodily functions, sex and death. A light pick only.

jlhammar Thanks for the heads-up! Good to be prepared. I'll be interested to see how I get on with this. Those things can definitely be turn-offs for me. 13mo
Cinfhen I liked this one, audio was EXCELLENT but it‘s definitely NOT for everyone- it‘s very graphic in detailing bodily functions @jlhammar 13mo

sarahbarnes Great review! I just looked for this one at my library this morning because the description intrigued me, but it‘s not out in the US yet I don‘t think. 13mo
TrishB Thanks for warning 😁 13mo
Cinfhen @sarahbarnes I was able to borrow through #Scribd if you have a subscription 😁and I think Scribd offers free trials too!! 13mo
squirrelbrain I borrowed it on #Scribd too @sarahbarnes although I couldn‘t get the audio on there, unlike @Cinfhen 13mo
squirrelbrain It‘s quite short @jlhammar but full of the graphic elements. I‘d still give it a go though, but maybe only if you can get it for ‘free‘. 13mo
Librarybelle Great review! 13mo
sarahbarnes Thank you @Cinfhen and @squirrelbrain! I don‘t have a subscription but maybe I‘ll do the free trial. 😁 13mo
Megabooks I can‘t do bodily functions in fiction. Pass. 13mo
Ruthiella I dunno. I think Manhunt was about my limit for this year in terms of grubbiness! 😂 13mo
batsy Nice review. It's good to know what to be prepared for! 13mo

WOW! If this book sets the tone for the #WomansPrizeLongList23 we are in for a wild ride😊! This book was BANANA PANTS
It does get a bit graphic at some points, which might turn some readers off, but I found the book original and memorable. Similar in style to Ottessa Moshfegh and Melissa Broder. The story of a small independent cinema that becomes acquired by a big chain conglomerate. Descriptive and distinct - excellent audio narration- LOVED IT

vlwelser You had me at 🍌👖 13mo
jlhammar Awesome! This is one of the longlisted titles I‘m most excited to try. 13mo
Cinfhen It‘s SOOOOOOO OUT THERE @vlwelser @jlhammar - try to go audio…the narration was fantastic 13mo

Cathythoughts I think I‘m going to get this one 👍🏻♥️ 13mo
Cinfhen What are your thoughts so far @squirrelbrain - I think you‘ll like the quirkiness of this book @Cathythoughts but it does get a bit graphic in terms of vulgarity 🫣 13mo
Cathythoughts I‘m getting it. I can be always skim if gets too much in parts 😘 13mo
TheKidUpstairs This one intrigues me soooo much, but can't get it in Canada without spending a lot to get it sent from the UK. I'll wait to see if it's on the Shortlist. I'm currently reading another excellent, genre bending one from the Longlist: 13mo
Cinfhen That‘s one I can‘t seem to get yet @TheKidUpstairs there are quite a few titles that haven‘t even been released in the US yet. 13mo
TheKidUpstairs @Cinfhen Do you have a hoopla account? That's where I found it, and I think @Chelsea.Poole saw it on there in the US as well. 13mo
Cinfhen Ohhhh, I thought I tried Hoopla but I‘ll check again, thanks @TheKidUpstairs 🤩 13mo
Cinfhen Ohhhhh, IT IS THERE - Thanks Megan xxxx 13mo
squirrelbrain I‘m liking it so far @cinfhen, but not loving it. 🤷‍♀️ 13mo
Chelsea.Poole I‘m intrigued! 13mo
charl08 I live Banana Pants as a review. 13mo

Loved this: Smart, evocative writing. The misadventures of a bunch of misfits & their lives in & out of the run down independent cinema in which they work. They think they‘re cool & edgy but you can smell the stained seats & rank food in the foyer; feel the grime of the carpets in the cinema & in their similarly neglected apartments; smell the frowsy funk of their clothes & lack of personal hygiene. Cineliterate but never esoteric.Surreal & weird.
