Perhaps my least favorite book by one of my favorite childhood authors. It was dated even when I read it, with 60s slang and squicky ethnic portrayals. But I think I like it a little more now, especially with a better understanding of the title metaphor.

Ever since she was a baby, Wilma had always been sickly, weighing only a little over four pounds at birth. A wonderful book inspired by a letter the author received from the daughter of a Polio survivor who lived in an iron lung. I listened to the author-read audiobook, which was excellent.
