Red: A Crayon's Story | Michael Hall
17 posts | 28 read | 28 to read
A blue crayon mistakenly labeled as "red" suffers an identity crisis in this picture book by the New York Timesbestselling creator of My Heart Is Like a Zoo and It's an Orange Aardvark! Funny, insightful, and colorful, Red: A Crayon's Story, by Michael Hall, is about being true to your inner self and following your own path despite obstacles that may come your way. Red will appeal to fans of Lois Ehlert, Eric Carle, and The Day the Crayons Quit, and makes a great gift for readers of any age! Red has a bright red label, but he is, in fact, blue. His teacher tries to help him be red (let's draw strawberries!), his mother tries to help him be red by sending him out on a playdate with a yellow classmate (go draw a nice orange!), and the scissors try to help him be red by snipping his label so that he has room to breathe. But Red is miserable. He just can't be red, no matter how hard he tries! Finally, a brand-new friend offers a brand-new perspective, and Red discovers what readers have known all along. He's blue! This funny, heartwarming, colorful picture book about finding the courage to be true to your inner self can be read on multiple levels, and it offers something for everyone.

I loved this #bannedbook. It‘s a book designed to teach kids about being transgender, but can also be used to discuss labels of any kind. I loved the illustrations and I can imagine lots of great conversations being sparked.

AHHHHHHHH!!! How perfect is this book? I can clearly see what all the fuss is about. You may be born with a label, but all that matters is to be who you are, not who the label is. LOVE everything about this.

This is my all time favorite children‘s book! It‘s a F book written and illustrated by Michael Hall. This is a great RA for students 3rd grade and up to have a discussion about identity and differences. https://www.harpercollins.ca/9780062252098/red/ this link shares a little more about the book and a printable activity for the class. #ucflae3414su19
UDL strategy: 9.3

carlenerubin I love this book! It has such a powerful message for children! I think it should be read to every child! I love your link and will definitely be taking this with me to my internship placement in the fall! 5y

Red is a F picture book written and illustrated by Michael Hall. This book follows the life of a blue crayon in a red wrapper. He faces many challenges as he is expected to perform as a red crayon but is a blue crayon on the inside. He realizes that to be successful you need to be who you are and not what people want you to be. This book would be a great RA to encourage children to be who they want to be and not what others want them to be.

UDL: 8.2
ESOL: 16. Integrate speaking, listening, reading and writing activities
By completing this unit lesson there are many different activities you are varying the challenges based on the day. On one da children are discussing labels and on another day they are having a discussion. This will allow for partner work and individual work.

This is wonderful! What a simple way to convey the message that just because some outside label says you are one thing, it makes sense and should be easier to be what you really are - forget the label! #bbrc #A2Z:R

I've heard about this book many times, but never actually read it. When our *lovely* (NOT) state legislature basically forced our school district to remove Jacob's New Dress from the anti-bullying curriculum, 😡 this was the book substituted in its place. A story about learning who you are, being true to yourself, and supporting those around us.

Sarahreadstoomuch I have this one to read for R too! 5y
LibrarianRyan That‘s like the tagged book that keeps getting removed that I love. 5y
alisiakae @LibrarianRyan I haven't heard of that one...stacked! 5y
LibrarianRyan @4thhouseontheleft it‘s of the books the man checked out of the Orange County Iowa‘s library to burn on Facebook. He burned 4 books in the video to “protect “ the children. It has also raised a fuss in a few other libraries. 5y

We have been hearing a bit of “I can‘t wear that because it‘s not pink” or “We only play with boys” etc at preschool. I emailed my library to ask for some books about gender norms and acceptance, to help our kiddos be confident in what they like and accept their friends, and they gave me this treasure trove! The tagged book is my fave, but they are all wonderful. I can‘t wait to start with this one tomorrow and hear what color crayons they all are!

This page (and book) absolutely touched my heart. 💜 I remember hearing about this book when it was published, but was surprised to find it (available!) on my library‘s OverDrive page. So grateful I got the chance to read it, and I definitely will suggest and gift it to everyone I know. 🖍💙

This adorable F book is fantastic for your library. It is about a poor blue crayon that is labeled red. He is having an identity crisis and every other color has something to say about it. Until he realizes his true color! I would love to do a RA with this story and teach students this wonderful lesson on being yourself and not listening to others. #UCFLAE3414f17

MeganMc https://www.teachingbooks.net/tb.cgi?a=1&tid=42279 this website takes to an amazing page that has so many cool tools for this book. It had an adorable book trailer, author interviews, and activities and guides to do while you read this story. The UDL strategy I would use is 3.2 highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships. The EL is 3 encourage self-talk/ positive thinking(this book is amazing for that). 6y
DominiqueL First, I absolutely love the creativity in your image. This is a great book for all ages but especially at older ages ( where they are read to less) because I feel that children are constantly feeling a pressure to fit in and not be themselves. This is such a great choice. 6y
DrSpalding Your image is phenomenal. Yes Red is having an identity crisis. This book has such a wonderful message. 6y

Red is a PR or an IR F book about a crayon that‘s labeled red but colors blue, the issues it faces, and the solutions that are arrived at. It covers UDL: 2.3, 3.2, 7.2, 7.3, 8.2 and ESOL 1, 3, and 12. DeannaT96 Okay so this book was read to me back when I️ was getting my degree at SSC, and I‘ve loved it since. It‘s a wonderful book to remind students that even if they don‘t match up to how people view them, it‘s okay. I️ love your activity- especially the bookmark that reinforces the message the book sends. Great pick! 6y
mayahearn I love this book, I think it is so cute and creative! It teaches a great lesson about seeing things from a different perspective. 6y
DrSpalding Another excellent post. You align the strategies and principles easily. The bookmark is so fun! A student in Monday‘s section turned this into a readers theater. This would be an excellent addition to your classroom. Check the readers theater page of the wiki. 6y

This F picture book, written and illustrated by best-selling picture book author Michael Hall, would be a great book for RA. The book is about Red, a blue crayon labeled red. Even with help from other crayons all his drawings turn out blue. Then, one day he meets a new friend who helps him realize that he is really blue! Red embraces this and draws all things that are blue and everyone cheers him on.

EricaG This is a great book to encourage kids to be true to themselves, no matter what other people tell them. https://www.teachingbooks.net/tb.cgi?a=1&tid=42279 this link takes you to a site that provides a teaching guide and activities for using this book. It includes a list of discussion questions that help students engage in higher level thinking. 6y
EricaG The discussion questions can be used to meet EL 36-ask numerous questions which require higher level thinking responses. This can also meet UDL 3.2- highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships, and UDL 3.3- guide information processing. #UCFLAE3414F17 (edited) 6y

This F, E.B. White Read Aloud honor book would be an excellent addition to any elementary classroom library. The theme of this book is about being true to yourself. The red crayon label on this blue crayon confused everyone including his family and the teacher. In the end, being true to himself is what helped everyone accept him. This book would be best RA, using the HC teacher's guide to make use of effective B, D and A reading strategies.

DrSpalding https://b0f646cfbd7462424f7a-f9758a43fb7c33cc8adda0fd36101899.ssl.cf2.rackcdn.co... The UDL principles 3.1 & 3.2 regarding activating prior knowledge and highlighting big ideas along with EL 4 & 14 linking content to student's prior knowledge and reading slowly at an appropriate pace all could be met by this picture book. #ucflae3414f17 (edited) 7y

For Pride weekend story hour, kind & dynamic local entertainer Blackberri read this moving picture book. The red crayon colors blue, he was just made that way, & learns to color beautiful blue oceans. My son liked the story & the illustrations are nice. Ages 2.5 and up for the book, I'd say. #kidsbooks #acceptance #tolerance #diversity
