Beartown
Beartown: A Novel | Fredrik Backman
From the New York Times bestselling author of A Man Called Ove, My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You Shes Sorry, and Britt-Marie Was Here, comes a poignant, charming novel about a forgotten town fractured by scandal, and the amateur hockey team that might just change everything. Winning a junior ice hockey championship might not mean a lot to the average person, but it means everything to the residents of Beartown, a community slowly being eaten alive by unemployment and the surrounding wilderness. A victory like this would draw national attention to the ailing town: it could attract government funding and an influx of talented athletes who would choose Beartown over the big nearby cities. A victory like this would certainly mean everything to Amat, a short, scrawny teenager who is treated like an outcast everywhere but on the ice; to Kevin, a star player just on the cusp of securing his golden future in the NHL; and to Peter, their dedicated general manager whose own professional hockey career ended in tragedy. At first, it seems like the team might have a shot at fulfilling the dreams of their entire town. But one night at a drunken celebration following a key win, something happens between Kevin and the general managers daughterand the next day everything seems to have changed. Accusations are made and, like ripples on a pond, they travel through all of Beartown, leaving no resident unaffected. With so much riding on the success of the team, the line between loyalty and betrayal becomes difficult to discern. At last, it falls to one young man to find the courage to speak the truth that it seems no one else wants to hear. Fredrik Backman knows that we are forever shaped by the places we call home, and in this emotionally powerful, sweetly insightful story, he explores what can happen when we carry the heavy weight of other people's dreams on our shoulders.

As anyone who follows hockey knows, hockey is so much more than just a game - it‘s about community, pride, spirit, resilience, belonging. Fredrik Backman captures all that and so much more in this book. I enjoyed it (listened to it on audio) but not sure his writing style is for me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #Booked2020 #MillenialAuthor #ReadingEurope2020 #Sweden #LitsyAtoZ #abecederianTBR #B #PopSugar2020 #bookwithatleastafourstarratingongoodreads #AuthorAMonth2020

This wasn‘t my favorite Backman but only because I found the subject so difficult. It didn‘t alter my opinion that Backman is some sort of emotional genius. This book made me feel...everything: heartbroken, hopeful, incredibly pissed off, and frustrated, to name a few.

Soubhiville I identify 100% with your review. All the feelings, a great book, but less enjoyable than his other novels because of the subject matter. 1w
Amiable I love Backman‘s works —his writing is so emotionally powerful. But I also think some small part of the credit should go to his translator, too. I always wonder how the books read and resonate in the original Swedish as comparison. 6d

Soubhiville I just read it. It‘s a continuation of the story of Beartown and Hed, and Maya‘s family, and Ana, Benji, Bono, and Amat. There‘s a little fisticuffs (it‘s hockey, after all) but that‘s the only sort of assault. I enjoyed it. 5d

This was the first Backman book I've read, and the writing was stellar. I still can't get over how he was able to portray so many different people and perspectives in a way that made each decision - even the horrible ones - at least somewhat understandable. This is a book that will stick with me for a long time. Not sure if I have the emotional stamina for book 2, though!!!

TheAromaofBooks @Cinfhen - have you read the sequel? I'm conflicted about whether or not I want to, since this one left me feeling so emotionally devastated! 1w
TheAromaofBooks @ljuliel - I love organizing and tracking books almost as much as I enjoy actually reading them, so it's been fun to create a little journal where I write down all my challenges and keep track of them!! 1w
TheAromaofBooks @marleed - at first I was a little overwhelmed by the number of people being introduced, but he really did a good job keeping all the balls in the air once they were circling. A book over 400 pages long, and I didn't feel like a single word was wasted. 1w

Cinfhen I was disappointed by the sequel/ I felt like it was written strictly for pocket money & it wasn‘t necessary. But most readers loved it 🤷🏼‍♀️ 1w
TheAromaofBooks @Cinfhen - The reason Beartown was originally on my TBR was because another friend had loved it so hard, but she had similar feelings to yours about the sequel, which is why I'm on the fence about reading it. Stoner and Beartown in the same week?? It's like I am TRYING to commit emotional suicide. Don't mind me, I'm just quietly sobbing in the corner. Beartown review tomorrow if I've recovered.

teainthelibrary I‘ve been wanting to read Stoner for AGES - might be time to finally pick it up! 1w
ljuliel Must be a couple of depressing stories. I own them both, but think I‘ll hold off awhile. Right now, I‘m trying to read things that veer off sad subjects. 1w
TheAromaofBooks @teainthelibrary - I'm a happy-book kind of girl, so I didn't love Stoner (which is a downer no matter how you cut it), but the writing was incredibly beautiful and thoughtful. I don't ever see myself rereading this one, but I'm glad that I read it once. 1w
TheAromaofBooks @ljuliel - Both books were excellent reads that I definitely recommend, I'm just not sure I would recommend reading them back-to-back! Stoner is sad, while Beartown is just... so well done, but hard to read nonetheless. Definitely worth keeping on your list, but if you're looking for some uplifting reading right now, these probably aren't the ones!! 1w

This was my 6th Backman book that I finished today. That was a large cast of characters and distinct personalities but it worked, despite the fact that I know little (and care less) about hockey 🏒 Plus, it‘s very quoteable! I appreciate why Backman wrote the first half the way he did, it makes the reader able to see the complex humans involved, rather than cardboard cut outs. It made it a slower read than expected, especially for me who has no interest in any sport and no knowledge of hockey. The exploration of toxic masculinity, herd mentality, and class privilege was well handled and is needed. Not as charming as My Grandmother Asked or Ove, but a pick.

Soubhiville Yes, I thought it had an entirely different feel from his other writings. I liked it a lot though, even though it was emotionally difficult. I‘m enjoying the sequel so far too. 2w

In this small community deep in the forest, stands a #frozen lake, used as an ice rink by people who first built the town. It is this ice rink and the current junior ice hockey team that the people lay their hopes and dreams on, to revive Beartown. I give Backman credit for the way he handled rape and its aftermath, but I was really disappointed by the writing. He had a few points he wanted to make, so he just beat the reader over the head with them again and again in a way that was repetitive, rather than expounding on the point. I also did not appreciate that he jumped back and forth between characters very quickly, often multiple times per page. He was trying SO HARD to be poignant.

Despite my best efforts, I didn't finish this in time for book club last night. 😭 A friend called me at the last minute needing to talk and friends come before books. I had 50 pages left to read when I got to book club but luckily we have a rule that you don't have to finish to participate and the discussion was still lively and I didn't get too many spoilers. So I'm going to finish it now. Must know how it ends! 😅

LauraBeth I started listening to this on audio and it seemed like there a LOT of characters. I was having a difficult time keeping up with everyone. Wondering if it‘s easier to just read it. 🤔 4mo
valeriegeary @LauraBeth it's very much 3rd person omniscient with a lot of head, time, and space switching but the physical book does a great job using white space so I was never confused. I don't think I could listen to it on audio though... That seems challenging... so it could be worth trying again with a paper copy. 🤷 4mo

Alot of people has said they can't read it because it's a hockey book. It is but more deeper than that. You are introduced to characters that you will love, get angry at, and also cheer and be disgusted with.
The only other thing I can say is, it was one great book, to me.

This book is a perfect story told not really about hockey, but more about the way we treat our boys and how we treat our girls, about small town, friendships, first love and parents and their children. Yes, every translated sentence! Perhaps the best thing about being so woefully behind the curve in reading this incredible story is having its sequel readily available.

I just complained about too many characters that had to be pulled together in a previous book. This time, I was instantly interested in every character introduced knowing each would make the book richer.

.
“...the president is sitting at his desk eating a sandwich the way a German Shepherd would trying eat a balloon filled with mayonnaise.” Not sure this is what the author intended, but I couldn‘t help but think of Chris Farley.

I got to work early this morning. It's been too long since I've time to hide in my quiet place around the side of the building with my coffee and my book. There was a nasty note in the kitchen from my night shift about my new day shift but I gave myself time to ignore it and read. #currentlyreading

Absolutely amazing. I love the way the characters develop and even how Beartown itself is a character.

My September stack! Hoping to get through all of these this month! Tagged book is for my in-person book club. American War is because I'm going to see Omar El Akkad in conversation with Margaret Atwood at the end of the month! Excited is an understatement!!! 😱🤗😁
