Beartown
Beartown: A Novel | Fredrik Backman
From the New York Times bestselling author of A Man Called Ove, My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You Shes Sorry, and Britt-Marie Was Here, comes a poignant, charming novel about a forgotten town fractured by scandal, and the amateur hockey team that might just change everything. Winning a junior ice hockey championship might not mean a lot to the average person, but it means everything to the residents of Beartown, a community slowly being eaten alive by unemployment and the surrounding wilderness. A victory like this would draw national attention to the ailing town: it could attract government funding and an influx of talented athletes who would choose Beartown over the big nearby cities. A victory like this would certainly mean everything to Amat, a short, scrawny teenager who is treated like an outcast everywhere but on the ice; to Kevin, a star player just on the cusp of securing his golden future in the NHL; and to Peter, their dedicated general manager whose own professional hockey career ended in tragedy. At first, it seems like the team might have a shot at fulfilling the dreams of their entire town. But one night at a drunken celebration following a key win, something happens between Kevin and the general managers daughterand the next day everything seems to have changed. Accusations are made and, like ripples on a pond, they travel through all of Beartown, leaving no resident unaffected. With so much riding on the success of the team, the line between loyalty and betrayal becomes difficult to discern. At last, it falls to one young man to find the courage to speak the truth that it seems no one else wants to hear. Fredrik Backman knows that we are forever shaped by the places we call home, and in this emotionally powerful, sweetly insightful story, he explores what can happen when we carry the heavy weight of other people's dreams on our shoulders.

This is an amazing and devastating book. Sometimes it was a little too real, I found myself anxious as I read, which just shows how realistic and engaging the writing was.

I would recommend this but it was an intense read. I read it on one sitting as I wasn't sure I could come back if I stopped.

Andrew65 Loved this book and it‘s follow-up. Waiting now to read the third one that has recently been published. 5d
PuddleJumper @Andrew65 I've got the second one out from the library. Think I need something a little lighter first! I didn't realize there was a third as well, I'll have to see if my library has it 5d

It‘s only a game. It only resolves tiny, insignificant things. Such as who gets validation. Who gets listened to. It allocates power and draws boundaries and turns some people into stars and others into spectators. That‘s all.

Just an unbelievable book. Backman is an absolute genius. There are so many controversies in this book that are dealt with head on and in a manner that is not glossed over.
It deals with a town‘s acceptance of group think and it‘s complicity in purging individuality. It poses the question of how far would you go to win and/or to fit in? Support a crime? Blame the victim? It is a fitting read after finishing A Man named Ove. Pure genius.

Currently re-reading one of my favourites, Beartown, in anticipation of The Winners coming out next month. Gosh, the writing in this series is just so lovely, it takes my breath away every time.

This is my second book from Backman and it‘s another great one. At first his style wasn‘t to my liking, but the more I read the more I found myself falling in love. The way he puts the best and worst of humanity on display is captivating. This back cover blurb describes this one so much more eloquently than I could. This was my #doublespin for July (I think…)

Prairiegirl_reading The first 100 pages are tough but then I couldn‘t put it down. The next in the series is better in my opinion. 💙 4mo

Why did I wait so long to read this book? It was so so so good! There‘s a life lesson on just about every page. This is a book that I‘ll probably go back and read again. Many of the characters were so emotionally strong! I‘m going to try the mini series next. I hope it lives up to the book! This is the 2nd book I‘ve read by this author. I‘ve loved both! I will admit I‘m not a big hockey fan - (bad Canadian!😂)
It took me a little to get through this book but it was so impactful. Blackman deals with such a difficult subject gracefully. He is a master of character progression.
I am interested to see where the next 2 in this series will go.

I have so many feelings about this book…it was confusing, it was heart breaking…at times it was a little boring, but for all those feelings, I‘m so glad I read it. It was deeply moving and I would recommend this to someone who has time to read. For someone who doesn‘t, they may not have the patience for this book.

This book made me think about the way people are often depersonalized in particular situations. I suppose that‘s one of the objectives in team sports though, so is it a bad thing to do or is it appropriate in these situations? In the book you always know the truth but that‘s not always the case in reality. Anyway, it‘s interesting and I recommend it.

Never thought I‘d read a book about ice hockey but heard this was great so I read it. The story of the players, parents, coaches, politicians in a small town that lived for high school hockey. Questions or morality, love, friendship, loyalty and justice are explored in this novel. Great characters that I can picture in my mind. Will start watching the mini series on HBO tonight.
