Naked
Naked | David Sedaris
In Naked, David Sedaris's message alternately rendered in Fakespeare, Italian, Spanish, and pidgin Greek is the same: pay attention to me. Whether he's taking to the road with a thieving quadriplegic, sorting out the fancy from the extra-fancy in a bleak fruit-packing factory, or celebrating Christmas in the company of a recently paroled prostitute, this collection of memoirs creates a wickedly incisive portrait of an all-too-familiar world. It takes Sedaris from his humiliating bout with obsessive behavior in A Plague of Tics to the title story, where he is finally forced to face his naked self in the mirrored sunglasses of a lunatic. At this soulful and moving moment, he picks potato chip crumbs from his pubic hair and wonders what it all means. This remarkable journey into his own life follows a path of self-effacement and a lifelong search for identity, leaving him both under suspicion and overdressed.

8-14-22: My 79th finished book of 2022! While I thoroughly enjoyed the writing style of the stories in this book, I did not laugh, not once. That‘s ok though, because I felt other things, especially when he wrote about his mother. Each story focused on David as a young boy and young man, growing up in the 70s. He led an interesting life full of travel and odd jobs. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️📖#️⃣7️⃣9️⃣

This is probably the funniest book I‘ve ever read. It wasn‘t without its emotional moments though, Ashes being my favorite story! There isn‘t a very profound way for me to articulate that I love the author‘s writing style and personality. I will definitely be reading more of his work in the near future

Entertaining as usual, but not my favorite by Sedaris

lkurgs I have read a total of seven books of his and I think Naked is my least favorite. That is not to say that I didn‘t enjoy it. I like all of his books but I found that Naked had about 70 or so pages that I didn‘t enjoy (his hitchhiking days). Although I felt that he ended the book brilliantly. 5y
jdiehr @lkurgs There are always parts in all of his books that rub me the wrong way, but the good always seems to far outweigh the bad. I keep coming back for more! 5y
lkurgs @jdiehr couldn‘t agree more! I finally have all of his books and intend to read them all by the end of August. I feel as if I were under a Sedaris spell! Love his writing and his hilarious and crazy stories. 5y
See All 6 Comments
rretzler @lkurgs @jdiehr I think I only have one or two of his left to read and my least favorite by far was Squirrel Meets Chipmunk, followed by Holiday on Ice (if it only had Santaland Diaries and Six to Eight Black Men it would have been my favorite!) It‘s funny, I‘ve been on a recent Sedaris kick and I keep seeing so many other Littens reading/listening to him right now too! For me, nothing beats his audiobooks as he is a great performer too! 5y
jdiehr @rretzler Yes - all of my Sedaris books have been audiobooks. I haven't read the 2 you mentioned yet but, good review or bad review, I will check them out 😊 5y
rretzler Of course, you need to read them all! I really like Sedaris‘ stories about himself and his family. Some of his fictional stories are a little off putting to me or just meh. One of the stories in Holidays on Ice was definitely NOT for me. 🤣 I think I have left Theft by Finding, Let‘s Explore Diabetes With Owls and Barrel Fever left to listen to! 5y

Not my favorite collection by Sedaris. Some bits were really entertaining but most were somber and disturbing. This was an older collection and I think his newer memoirs are a better blend of humor and insight. Additionally, I prefer Sedaris reading as a lone narrator as opposed to this performance read by both the author and his sister, Amy Sedaris. Still enough chuckles to give this a pick. #Audio

Megabooks I definitely like his newer ones better as well. 5y

This wasn‘t my favorite Sedaris, mostly because I kept getting distracted. It focuses a lot on his childhood which, as funny as he is, is disturbing to read about at times. Overall though, it‘s just as strong as his other collections I‘ve read (or listened to) and I especially liked the title story about his time at a nudist trailer park.

Hollie Nudist trailer park?! 😲 6y

Reviewsbylola I read two of his books years ago and they just didn‘t strike me as being that funny. I figured he just wasn‘t for me. Then I went out on a limb and got Calypso from BOTM. It was fantastic. Since then I‘ve listened to this and one of his other books on audio after a few littens urged me to try his audiobooks. They weren‘t wrong—he‘s great on audio! @Lmstraubie 6y

Sedaris is my favorite essayist, and I enjoyed this one. For me his writing is just comfortable. Even when he makes you think, you know he's going to turn it around and have you smiling in no time.

My favorite essay in this book was the title work, Naked. Knowing his personality, just the idea of him in a nudist colony cracks me up.

In the audio he had parts read by his sister Amy. I found that a bit distracting. Otherwise it was great.

My Goodwill #bookhaul. Some came from the regular Goodwill store and some came from those atrocious boxes at the "outlet" across town. I've read most of these, but either wanted a hard copy or to give away. The Christie is really pretty. More photos to come in another post. ?

“I was a smart-ass, born and raised. This had been my curse and would continue to be so.”

I first read this in print 10 years ago or so. This was freaking delightful on #audio! Sedaris narrates and his sister Amy pops in for the female speaking parts. Together, they are absolutely hilarious. I think I could listen to him tell personal stories all day long. I can't wait to continue rereading all of his books in this format.
