A HF novel is about a young girl, Kim Há, who moves to America after the Vietnam war. Kim ends up in Alabama where she has a few struggles, but in the end, she celebrates her new life in America. I would use this book for a LC having the students discuss the difference in cultures. #UCFLAE3414SP20

This HF novel has won multiple award; Coretta Scott King Award, National Book Award Finalist, Newbery Honor Award, and Scott O‘Dell Award for Historical Fiction. This amazing book is about three young sisters who travel across the country to stay with their mother whom moved away years prior, only to find out she wasn‘t very interested in mending their relationship. This would book would be good for a LA. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Out of My Mind | Sharon M. Draper
post image

This RF novel is a MUST READ, it was the NY Times Best Seller for almost two years, and I understand why! Out of my Mind is based off the main character, Melody, whom has Cerebral Palsy. While everyone thinks she stupid, she‘s smarter than them all, but she isn‘t able to express that until she has her new—high tech—computer that helps her finally communicate just a little. I think this book would be great in a LC in the classroom. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Nobody gets the better of Beth except, maybe, I reckon, Philip Hall. This Newberry award winning RF novel is about a sixth-grade girl, Beth, and her handsome, good at everything, crush, Philip Hall. Philip is really good at everything, and always is the best, until, Beth realizes she‘s been letting him win this whole time because she likes him so much. At the end, Beth realizes that she doesn‘t have to let him win to get him to like her.

Ashley_B This novel would be good during IR aligned with UDL 5.3 (Build fluencies with graduated levels of support for practice and performance) and ESOL strategy 29 (Offer a variety of reference materials at the students‘ instructional level for independent use).

“You can't blend in when you're BORN TO STAND OUT”
Ever WONDER what it‘s like to be so different that people can‘t help but stare? This #1 NYTimes Bestseller, RF novel is about a boy, Auggie, who was born with a severe facial deformity that, up until now, has prevented him from going to a school. This book would be great in a PR, students will understand how it feels to be different and the importance of treating others how you want to be treated.

Ashley_B UDL design 3.2 (Highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships) and ESOL strategy 6 (Continually monitor students‘ comprehension).

This RF novel that leaves you just as speechless as Blended. Both books are similar, Izzy and Starr both experience uneasy balances between different racial environments. I could go into more details about it, but I refuse to give any spoilers. This is a must read! Both novels could be used during Black History month. #UCFLAE3414SP20 https://angiethomas.com/

Ashley_B I would incorporate this as a RA in my future classroom, using UDL design 3.3 (Guide information processing and visualization), and ESOL strategy 11 (Place language in meaningful context).

The Hate U Give received multiple awards:
A #1 New York Times Bestseller
Boston Globe-Horn Book Award
Coretta Scott King Honor (Author)
Edgar Allan Poe Award Nominee (Mystery Writers of America)
Michael L. Printz Honor Book
National Book Award Longlist

Number the Stars | Lois Lowry
post image

This HF is a 1990 Newbery Medal winning novel about a brave 10-year-old, Annemarie, and her family that help a Jewish family escape German troops during WWII. Though this book was published in 1989, students can relate to this with the war in Afghanistan and Iraq. It‘s not frequently spoken about, but many lost loved ones in those wars, just as they did during WWII. Lois Lowry would be a great AS for students as many of her books are phenomenal!

Ashley_B I would use ESOL strategy 15 (Reinforce the key ideas you present again and again) and UDL design 2.1 (Clarify vocabulary and symbols).

The Giver | Lois Lowry
post image

This Newbery award winning SF book is so good I can‘t keep my nose out of it! This novel tells about a 12-year-old boy, Jonas, who lives in a dystopian society that is colorless, ideal, and free of crime and sadness. At his age, children are assigned jobs/roles, which trains them for what they‘re going to do for rest of their lives, limiting their individuality. The society is controlled by rules and traditions of their Elders.

Ashley_B I would use ESOL strategy 2 (Promote cooperation (small groups)) and UDL design 8.3 (Foster collaboration and community) while using this in LC for students.

This TL is about Jamie O‘Bourke, whom was the laziest man in Ireland that made his wife plant and dig up potatoes on her own, until she hurt her back, making him have to figure out something on his own. When a leprechaun showed up, Jamie was fooled, or so his wife thought, and took a seed instead of the leprechaun‘s pot of gold. Can you infer what happens next? Well, I won‘t spoil the ending for you guys!

Sharing this book with my blended baby. This book is about an eleven-year-old girl, Izzy, who is being torn between divorced parents while experiencing a feeling of not belonging anywhere because she‘s not just one or the other, but she‘s both, black and white.
