The Great Gilly Hopkins | Katherine Paterson

An enticing RF, Newbery Award winning story about life in foster care and what it‘s like in the mind of a young, feisty girl determined to get what she wants. LC is my chosen teaching strategy because I want students to discuss the choices Gilly makes. “Would you ever do that? Why or why not?” Here are some lessons you could have students do together in their LCs-

We follow Karana through her dangerous survival on the Island of Blue Dolphins in this Newbery Award winning, RF novel. This book would be great to Read Aloud in a secondary classroom. Paired with some *lesson plans, let your students dive in to Scott O‘Dell‘s story slowly as you read 1-2 chapters a day.

The F story we all know and love by Marcus Pfister won the Abby Children‘s Award in 1994. This story would be best used with Reader‘s Theatre I think! Adding crafts* and lessons in character, we can teach how sharing is caring.

JocelynNolton I haven't read this book yet but it's definitely on my list. MLK Jr. is such an important part of our history and I think students should read about him and learn about all the things that he's done in his lifetime. Also loved your resource for the book. 6y

Hatchet | Gary Paulsen

This Newbery award winning RF novel, is one of the best adventure stories I‘ve read; it would make a great LC book for secondary students. (The details of how the pilot died horrified me and now I‘m afraid of having a heart attack at anytime.) Scholastic has lesson plans to help guide your usage of this book in the classroom!

kenyanellie I will always remember reading Hatchet! It wasn‘t my cup of tea but I definitely think it is an essential in every classroom library! Scholastic is such a wonderful resource! (edited) 6y
AshleyAA I remember when I had to read Hatchet in one of my classes. I loved it! The teacher would read aloud and we were expected to follow along and answer simple questions, but I love that the lesson plan you provided encourages students to predict and discuss (in groups) the things that are occurring as they are reading, wish my teacher would‘ve incorporated group discussions. 6y
