Actual Size | Steve Jenkins
post image
Pickpick

Actual Size by Steve Jenkins is a great classroom read. It is a NF with beautiful paper collage illustrations and the actual sized body parts of 18 animals. I would definitely do a RA while asking students to make gestures and participate. I would use UDL startegy 2.3 support the coding of text, mathematical notation, and symbols. Esol strategy18 Use commands and directions that involve overt student actions as in total physical response

Ordonezk I found this blog where a teacher showed a really great activity to do with a kindergarten classroom. http://larremoreteachertips.blogspot.com/2011/07/actual-size.html?m=1 #UCFLAE3414SuB18 6y
Kaelya I love the way this author writes! I bet kids would love seeing the *actual size* of these animals in front of them! 6y
emilybanne I love how we are able to incorporate math and reading together! I think it is a super cute book that is super engaging for the kids and an awesome way to teach measurement! 6y

Gabylaurel10 This book looks so fun and interesting! I think it would be great with read aloud or even readers theater and let the kids be the animals!! 6y
AmyPerezCubas I love the picture! It sounds like an awesome book to read especially when kids aren‘t always excited about learning measurements! 6y
Thayes1787 This book is so captivating! I love the way it shows student how big something really is by looking at the pages! I like your picture as well! The activity you have listed is very engaging and interactive. 6y

Last Stop on Market street by Matt de la Peña, illustrated by Christian Robinson. It is the winner of the Gold Newbery Medal, Caldecott Award, and Coretta Scott King Award. Well deserving of all 3 awards Last stop on Market Street is a RF depicting the tale of CJ and his Nana. Nana gently and patiently shows CJ the treasures hidden in the bus commute. I would use RA while also incorporate think, pair, share in the read aloud.

Ordonezk I would use UDL strategy 3.1 activate or supply background knowledge. ESOL strategy 4 link lesson topic to students prior knowledge. I found this website that had word searches that could be used for leveled vocabulary searches. https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/book/last-stop-market-street #UCFLAE3414SuB18 6y
DrSpalding Good for you Kelly! The reading is fundamental website is a quality resource and you have aligned thoughtful strategies and principles. 6y

The Jumping Mouse by John Steptoe. It is TL originating from a Native American Legend. John Steptoe‘s illustration was awarded with the Caldecott honor book award. I would do a RA for this legend. Sit the kids on the carpet and let the words of Steptoe do the rest. UDL strategy 2.2 clarify syntax and structure. ESOL strategy21 Record your lectures presentations or stories on audio tapes

Ordonezk This website has a couple of activists to include alongside the reading of the book and also leveled lesson plans. https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/book/story-jumping-mouse #UCFLAE3412SuB18 6y
DrSpalding Your summary needs a bit more detail. Be sure to add enough detail so that the reader, including me knows what the book is about. 6y

The Giving Tree | Shel Silverstein

Pickpick

The Giving Tree by award winning author Shel Silverstein. It is a F book about a tree and its unconditional and selfless love for a boy. I always felt like the tree gave so much for the happiness of someone else. I would use S as the strategy. UDL strategy 2.1 clarity vocabulary and symbols. ESOL strategy20 list the most important words and phrases you plan to use in a presentation.

Ordonezk I found this website to accompany the reading of this book. www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resource/lesson-plans/exploring-change-through-allegory-1082.html?tab=4#tabs #UCFLAE3414SuB18 6y
DrSpalding Nice image! The resource is not a hyperlinked however I know that it is because they include hashtags. No worries. Read write think is high-quality. 6y

The One and Only Ivan | Katherine Applegate
post image

The one and only Ivan by Katherine Applegate is a magnificent MF book and winner of the Newberry Medal. Katherine Applegate transports the reader into the mind of Ivan and creates a connection between the reader and Ivan. Ivan is a great silverback gorilla living at “the exit 8 big top mall and video arcade... conveniently located off I-95”. It is a tale of friendship and the desire for change in the right direction. I would use GR.

Ordonezk I found a great lesson plan that incorporates the book. www.flreads.ord/Book_Award/extensions/Ivan_files/Ivan.pdf I think this book would be great to teach students compassion, story sequence and setting. UDL strategy 8.3 foster collaboration and community. ESOL strategy 6 continually monitor students‘ comprehension. 6y
DrSpalding Nice job using the FL reads website. Literature circles and UDL 8.3 align beautifully. 6y
