The Scent of God | Saikat Majumdar

Pickpick

The beautiful and somewhat erotic cover is just a clickbait. Remove it and you'll reach the sheen leathery skin underneath, brandishing its saffron hue. This titillating façade with an undercurrent of monastic inspiration is all you need to absorb before proceed reading it.
The book deals with spirituality and sexual desire, love and cruelty, divine and mundane; makes room for all of them while coalescing some of them together.

Ever wondered why the cultural world is so biased? They always celebrate some nonsense modern art done by some well known artist while eschewing the potential of works done by some lesser known artists.

Why is it so? I've got a kinda answer in this passage by Casagrande.

Reggie Or you luck out and get a reader like me who loves paragraph long stream of conscious sentences. 5y
Prithu_reads In that case, I'm really fortunate! 😂 5y

Mix sacred with profane, classic with pop, painting with meme. Entangle culture with anarchy.

Good! Now raise a toast, for you have grasped the essence of postmodernism. 😝🤣

Pickpick

The protagonist had a lofty idea about himself. He helped people without asking for anything in return. He fought for justice and was uncompromising about truth.
His bubble of self illusion bursts after a small incident. He did nothing to help a girl who presumably had committed suicide by jumping into water before him. This incident shatters the very construct of his selfhood.
The novel ends with the aforesaid sinister note. (Quote in image)

The book has three parts. The first part has 11 short stories, all related to the theme of love. The second and third part consist of two novellas. The intricate detailing makes the stories trustworthy.

I felt they were all waiting only for the moment when Claudia, infuriated, would get up and leave me there alone, making me once more the anonymous man I had always been, the man nobody notices any more than one would notice a spot of damp on the wall. (Page 140)

Hi there! though a newbie, whatever I have seen so far is enough to fall for the litsyian community. My Litsy journey begins with 'Difficult Loves' by Italo Calvino. Looking forward to have some really cool bookish talks. #firstpost #spreadlove
