so-soThis #aam pick didn‘t click with me. The magical realism combined with a rationalism is good parable was just weird. As this was my scramble pick (the library had it available to “borrow now”… maybe I should have taken that as a sign…) I think I‘d like to try one of Rushdie‘s better known books before I say he‘s not for me.
So I have a rule for myself that I don't force myself to finish books that don't vibe with my mood, otherwise it's like punishing myself with reading and it's hard enough for me to finish a book these days, I don't want to start resenting books. So I'm gonna have to shelf this one, we just weren't on the same wavelength.
I'm down with COVID but luckily I had some library books already. Lou and Boe think quarantine it's the best thing that's ever happened to me.
Based on A Thousand and One Nights, which I loved hard. Anyone read this one? Thoughts?

pickA magical tale of when worlds collide - the human earth as we know it is penetrated by the jinni realm with love and hate. An epic battle reigns down on the earth while lovers try to suss out living in their present moment and being tied to their past relationships. Not my favorite Rushdie - really between a Pick/So-So. This dense legend is worth the effort. Don't put it down for too long though, you may easily forget where you left off....
Favorite bit of storytelling thus far.....
I couldn't resist! Clarice Lispector is one of my favorite writers, her books are so sadly emotional, but in such a good and meaningful way #ptcover 🇵🇹🇧🇷

so-soIt's a credit to his writing ability that I finished this—and didn't pan it. The story is such weak tea, and the characters such nonentities, that it was mostly a struggle to keep from bailing. He either phoned this one in, or is not worth reading. Perhaps his talent is better suited to non-fiction or short stories.

I love Rushdie's books and really enjoyed this one, complete with magic and Jinns (maybe even flying carpets). The title (and book) is a take off on Arabian nights.

pickOf course he can write and I'd rather read sentences crafted by Sir Salman than perhaps any other living writer, but I got a bit lost in this giant battle of the Jinn. I know that there were metaphors going on here but they wore me out a bit. I've had better times reading Rushdie than this.
pickPsychology is my first love. Philosophy is a closely related second. And fantasy is, lately, a much-appreciated third. When an author is able to both skillfully and seamlessly combine all of these elements the end result is a difficult, powerful and interesting book. There is a plot, but it hides within a deeper meaning. There are characters, but they evolve somewhat haphazardly. Still, I enjoyed it, and will think of the ending for some time.💡💙
In the midst of the philosophical and mind-bendingly fantastical there is this: "He needed to practice on larger animals. Any sheep around here? Nobody's gonna miss a few sheep, right? Maybe the metamorphoses were reversible, in which case, hey, no sheep were harmed in the making of this superpower." Is it bad I laughed? #lmao ????

I've started reading a book that has absolutely nothing to do with my Master's Thesis and is thus purely for my own enjoyment. I've been fond of Rushdie since my grandfather chose to give me one of his books when I was still a kid, although the book was in many ways beyond my young comprehension something about it pulled me in. He is masterful storyteller and his prose is always startlingly beautiful.
pickThis is a wonderful magical tale. A War of The Worlds fought between good and evil. There are some truly memorable characters and the story line is fast paced and full of crazy situations. I found it a fun and entertaining read. It furthers my appreciation of Rushdie as a writer. There were a great number of characters and situations so you definitely have to pay attention. I thought it was well worth it. Geronimo the Gardner is perfection.
WHY??? Because reading is good but reading with chips and salsa is better 😂. This book is starting off strong.
bailedI didn't finish this one. It has a complicated storyline and I just can't find time to devote to it right now. I hope to get back to it someday.
panThis is my first Salman Rushdie novel. And I will be honest I expected more. I am a little bit disappointed. 😒 It's quite dry and I was struggling to focus on it, which usually isn't a problem for me. I just have to say that it really caters to a specific type of reader. And that reader is not me. Definitely. 😐

Starting to pack for a trip always begins for me with what books I want to take/read next. This time I am considering a new approach: take all the thinnest books in my tbr to help reach my annual reading goal. This trip is a mixed bag (Hear Rushdie speak in DC, work conference in San Diego, then weekend in Palm Springs). Which approach would you take (which side of Rushdie in the photo)?
I'm having a weird relationship with this book--I was really enjoying it, but then I fell a little flat with it and haven't picked it up in several weeks. I'm a little more than halfway through it. Does anyone have any experience with it? I know I'm allowed to put it down, but I do want to finish it...
