Fun Home
Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic | Alison Bechdel
A fresh and brilliantly told memoir from a cult favorite comic artist, marked by gothic twists, a family funeral home, sexual angst, and great books. This breakout book by Alison Bechdel is a darkly funny family tale, pitch-perfectly illustrated with Bechdel's sweetly gothic drawings. Like Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis, it's a story exhilaratingly suited to graphic memoir form. Meet Alison's father, a historic preservation expert and obsessive restorer of the family's Victorian home, a third-generation funeral home director, a high school English teacher, an icily distant parent, and a closeted homosexual who, as it turns out, is involved with his male students and a family babysitter. Through narrative that is alternately heartbreaking and fiercely funny, we are drawn into a daughter's complex yearning for her father. And yet, apart from assigned stints dusting caskets at the family-owned "fun home," as Alison and her brothers call it, the relationship achieves its most intimate expression through the shared code of books. When Alison comes out as homosexual herself in late adolescense, the denouement is swift, graphic -- and redemptive.

I am not really a graphic novel person - I think this is the 3rd one I‘ve ever read - but this is nothing short of a masterpiece. It literally took my breath away. ALL THE STARS.

And with that I‘ve finished my summer prompts for #booked2019.

There was a distance in this between Bechdel and her father that is so upsetting, given what happened. The way she uses art to build that emotional distance is gracefully done. But I wish they‘d found a way to connect.

Thought provoking and interesting graphic novel about the author‘s life/childhood. I definitely think it is labeled correctly as a tragicomic- there is a lot of tragedy, but also humor. This seems like a very honest telling of her life as it happened to her and I really respect that. It didn‘t seem exaggerated or in any way like she was trying to justify anything about her parents. I think the intended audience is teenagers and above.

Brilliant graphic memoir. Poignant, insightful and original in its approach to the intersections of coming of age and coming out, feminism, gay identity, acceptance and the unique dynamics of a deeply unhappy family.
Please do your self a service and read this book.

Is it wrong that the word tragicomic is what drew me to this book? I liked it. I think some might find the story sad, but coming from someone who also had an odd relationship with a parent, and childhood, I got where she was coming from. I do admit to not knowing all the classic books referenced in the story.

bookishkris @kgriffith I live in these dresses in the summer! Sooo comfy, and flattering on every body type. I buy them on sale or with a coupon (or better yet, on sale AND with a coupon). I can‘t wear yellow, but I got the black floral, polka dot, and green stripe this summer. I still have like 4 from a couple of years ago, too. (edited) 5mo

American cartoonist, Alison Bechdel, known for comic 'Dykes To Watch Out For', wrote this wonderfully done graphic memoir about her relationship with her father, Bruce. And about her sexual orientation as a lesbian.
Themes of suicide, gender roles and a dysfunctional family overlay this story of coming out, finding your first girlfriend and living through Nixon and Watergate trial.
Stunningly brilliant

#JuneItsElectrifying Day 26: There was a time when lesbians were called #TBirds. This fiercely honest graphic memoir by Bechdel speaks eloquently of coming-out and being comfortable in one‘s skin. As a reader, I was deeply fascinated by the dynamics between father and daughter, the long-suffering and silent mother, & the almost-invisible brothers. There are scabs of pain here that reveal burning wounds, peeling away at the edges. Full review ⬇️

Lindy Nice review. I hadn‘t heard of the use of t-bird for lesbian before, so I googled it and learned it‘s a Filipino term. 1y

I've been meaning to read Fun Home forever. It seems somehow appropriate that I finally got to it only months after my own father's death. I connected with this in a way I didn't anticipate. The literary references and complex relationships really echoed my own life in an unexpected way. Definitely recommended. I am going to have to reread it.

A graphic memoir is indeed the best way for a talented cartoonist to write a memoir. This is a very honest, revealing, and deep memoir that really packs a punch! It's about a young girl and about her relationship with her father who was director of a funeral ("fun") home. It's also about her coming out, then discovering her father was also gay shortly before his sudden death. After his death, she discovers even more about him that she didn't know.

Alison Bechdel's graphic memoir of family secrets and identity is set against the backdrop of the family funeral home (fun home for short) & childhood home, a renovated Victorian that is practically a museum. She had me at funeral home, really. Interwoven to this intimate story in an accessible way are literary references to Proust, Fitzgerald, Joyce & more. Also it's a Broadway musical. 🎶
