Did anyone else watch the #frankenstein movie that came out yesterday? I‘m SO intrigued by other peoples‘ thoughts. I have one major gripe with it- Victor‘s parental background. Much of the tragedy in the book centers around how Victor came from an extremely loving family but didn‘t carry those values to his treatment of his own “child”. The movie shows such a different background for Victor that seems to give a more generational trauma message.

TieDyeDude I haven't read the book yet, but I loved this movie version. It made me want to read the book more than any other version I've seen. That change in his background is interesting; it totally worked for the movie, and fits with themes in the rest of del Toro's filmography. I like the idea of him coming from a loving family, though. 3w
Lin3han @TieDyeDude I HIGHLY recommend the book. I just reread it within the past week and it‘s a true masterpiece. I really liked Del Toro‘s version too! I think it‘s the best adaptation out there. I also don‘t put much stock into movie adaptations because the media is so different, but this adaptation was beautiful! 3w
danx There is so much which was lost in the movie. Inverting his childhood; the monster too pretty; removing his mother at a young age and Justine completely making for an overly masculine story, even ending with a Byron quote which I found poor taste; the monster doesn‘t cause any direct hurt and so it lacked all complexity and had a totally different reasoning and morality. Pretty enough movie and enjoyed the theatre experience, confused that GdT is 3w
danx supposed to be such a fan with the choices he made. I respect it‘s a take on the story and a retelling but not my favourite of his work. 3w

RavenclawOwlCat I tried to like it and I couldn‘t! Granted, that was 8 years ago and maybe I‘d feel different now but classics are tougher to enjoy with the language difference. 3w

This was a perfect gothic story for the October season. It weaves together elements of Jack the Ripper, Mary Reilly (movie), Jane Eyre, and Frankenstein. It was such a good story; I flew through the whole book in one day. I wished it was longer.

This was an insightful look into the creation of Frankenstein!

I read Frankenstein earlier this year and loved it, so naturally I had to read this book. I was impressed that Mary Shelley wrote a masterpiece at age 19.

The best part of the book was the depiction of female rage. Mary‘s rage starts off quietly and then slowly simmers into an inferno.

IriDas I hadn‘t heard of this book. I studied Frankenstein multiple times in uni (English major) and was never satisfied with my professor‘s portrayal of Mary. They always made her sound like some frivolous little girl and brushed me off when I questioned her relationship with Percy (I‘m not a fan lol). 1mo
oddandbookish @IriDas She‘s definitely not a frivolous little girl in this one! Her relationship with Percy is portrayed as incredibly complicated. 1mo

I‘m a vampire girl, what can I say? 3/5 of these are about vamps. I‘m currently reading another book, Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil with @MsRadioSilence and I would also add it to this list if I were done with it! So, dear reader, we close the onslaught of recs with monsters and mayhem. All horror, of course. #hauntedshelf #blackcatcrew #linehanloves

Oh wow, I did not expect to love this one as much as I did. It's eerie and it does have a fantasy vibe, even though it's not. I never quite knew where the story was heading and the things I thought would happen, did not. And of course I loved Mary and how she approaches all the difficulties in her life (they are mostly male shaped). I didn't know it, but it was the right book for me to read in autumn time.

First off, it was interesting that the book was a story within a story and had 3 narrators (Walton, Frankenstein, and the Creature). That was something I wasn‘t expecting but it worked.

The star of the story was the Creature (aka Frankenstein‘s monster). The Creature was the epitome of being othered. He was so misunderstood and just wanted to belong and feel loved.
