Overall a fairly good pop-psychology/philosophy book on how to determine your values and what matters to you in life. Wish he would have cited his research when stating sweeping generalizations.
This book follows Amanda, a young woman who believes she is being possessed by an ancient demon. The first-person perspective of the experience of becoming possessed is innovative, but while the ending was supposed to read as shocking, it was rather predictable. Still worth a read for horror fans.

A concise, practical guide to daily meditation written by an extreme skeptic. The author, a journalist and national news anchor, reviews the philosophical, psychological and health benefits of meditation, interspersed with what precipitated his meditative journey via autobiographical snippets.
An eye-opening narrative of the therapeutic alliance. A therapist explains fundamental clinical therapeutic theory both from the perspective of the therapist and client. Why do we ultimately seek therapy, and how does the clinician help us find meaning?
Arising from the eponymous podcast, John Moe‘s semi-autobiographical account explores the origins of his depression while also discussing the universality of depressive thinking. Humorous yet incredibly touching.
A thought-provoking memoir of a woman‘s experience living with schizophrenia. Dr. Elyn Saks is a brilliant, accomplished scholar who battles the demons of this debilitating disease, as well as the societal stigma of “being mentally ill.” A well-written account of this misunderstood disorder.
Noemi Taboada, a young Mexican socialite, is tasked in investigating her cousin‘s whereabouts. Her cousin, recently married into an old English family, writes that her husband is trying to poison her, is being kept prisoner, and can hear ghosts in the walls. What exactly is happening in their old dilapidated mansion? Equal parts Bronte and Lovecraft, Noemí must solve the riddle of this mysterious family to save her cousin.
A thrilling expose on Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of Theranos, a biotech company that purportedly could conduct hundreds of tests on a few drops of blood. Did she purposely set out to scam investors out of billions, or did she take “fake-it-till-you-make-it” too far?
Totally dug this story about Yale‘s secret occult societies. Alex Stern is a student trainee of 9th House, which monitors the other houses‘ occult activities. Her traumatic upbringing and ability to see ghosts prepares her well in investigating a campus homicide and underlying rampant corruption.
I liked the idea of this story, much more than the execution. A Boston history professor researching her family history, potential witchy abilities and a family curse: sounds awesome! But the story was too much of a slow burn and I found the protagonist unlikable and kind of dim. Lovely prose though
A tour de force expose on the lengths powerful men will go to silence women they have sexually assaulted. Farrow‘s Catch and Kill presents infuriating, disturbing, and powerful accounts of victims, whistleblowers and truth seekers. Likely the best book I‘ll read this year.
So the chosen one vanquishes the great evil, and “lives happily ever after.” But...do they really? How do they cope when this identity no loner defines them? Rowell‘s follow-up to Carry On deftly explores these themes, along with other young adult issues. Can‘t wait to read more of their adventures!
“Great buildings, like great mountains, are the work of centuries.” - Paris, France
Even though The Silence of the Lambs is well known, reading this psychological thriller today still manages to disturb, distress, and excite. Clarice Starling, FBI agent in training, pursues serial killer Buffalo Bill with the help of infamous cannibal Hannibal Lector. Tense and heart pounding!
Can Special Agent Will Graham find the monstrous Red Dragon, a serial killer targeting families, before he kills again? A very taut psychological thriller with characters you become emotionally invested in, leading to an explosive ending. Looking forward to the sequels!
“There is nothing like looking, if you want to find something. You certainly usually find something, if you look, but it is not always quite the something you were after.”
“The secret of a good old age is simply an honorable pact with solitude.” -Cartagena, Colombia
“Language of the Birds” -Brian Goggin. A sculptural installation for the public plaza in San Francisco. Where stories take flight!
What would you do if the Devil paid you a visit, and he promised to give you something you‘ve long wanted in exchange for your help in acquiring his stolen Neko cat? And that action would save the world? The Weirdness is a charming, supernatural romp which twists and turns to a satisfying conclusion.
Throwback to my first Books on the Subway! Does your city do a free book exchange via your public transportation system?
“But in a solitary life, there are rare moments when another soul dips near yours, as stars once a year brush the earth. Such a constellation was he to me.” 🥰
This book isn‘t bad; it‘s a mildly entertaining autobiographical account of one woman‘s dating woes. I guess I was expecting a well-researched sociological commentary on dating as a woman in the context of women‘s rights and the me-too movement. This book lightly touched on some of those themes, but not enough for me.
A bittersweet story that follows Franny, Jet and Vincent, siblings growing up in 1960‘s NYC who struggle with their identity as witches (each with specific powers). Additionally, their family carries a curse, dooming those who love them to ruin. Can they break the curse and be free to love? 4/5⭐️s
My latest tote from Out of Print! Do you remember how books used to be checked out of the library? #oldschool
A wonderful and thoroughly engrossing account of the origin of HeLa cells, which have been used by most scientists to study cell development and functioning, as well as develop cures for many debilitating diseases. This book greatly humanizes science, yet does not sugar coat the ethical issues endemic to the field. Who “owns” human tissue and the resulting medicines developed from said biological specimens? A must read!
