The City We Became | N.K. Jemisin
post image

Finally finished this one. I'll admit I put off reading the last chapter for a while because I just didn't want this ride to end. :')

This acknowledgment makes me very emotional. My only wish is that we all find a home to love as much as New Yorkers love theirs.

Was anyone ever going to tell me how GOOD N.K. Jemisin is??! I'm in love.

Nute Girl, we needed a 1-hour conversation so that I could clue you in on her brilliance. Looks like now you know! She‘s on auto-buy for me!🙂 3y

The Art of Dying | Ambrose Parry

Wow, it's been a long time. Can't remember when I was last on here but it's been at least a year. Finally made it out of a reading slump. So ready to dive into this Ambrose Parry novel, which ironically is the sequel to the last book I had listed on here. 😝

Nute Welcome back to Litsy! I‘m looking forward to getting to know you!🙂 4y

"This is a book, and books are worlds,
and words are seeds in which meanings are curled.
Pages of oceans and margins of land
are civilizations you hold in the palm of your hand.
But look at your world and your life seems to shrink
to cities of paper and seas made of ink.
Do you know who you are, or have you been misled?
Are you the reader, or are you the read?"

That autograph means more now. I'll be the reader...and the writer. #TheReader

I'm loving all the lesbians?! Just finished You Know Me Well and totally wasn't expecting all this effortless representation. This is exactly how normal it should feel.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Five stars for this beautiful, sweet story set in San Francisco during Pride. Queer, full of love and friendship that gets through all the uncertainty of teenagers discovering life. 😄

CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian I just started the audiobook of this! 7y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @SignedBooksJunkie Yeah, the voice actors are great so far! 7y

I am mourning. What an emotional roller coaster. I finished this book, and now my heart doesn't know what to do with itself. I can't wait to see what the next one will bring.

Rereading this childhood favorite of mine since discovering that a tenth book came out last year and an eleventh is in the works.

I want to slap Enoch every time he opens his mouth, the sarcastic little pessimist. 😂 But this story is turning out to be really sweet and utterly creative beyond my imagination. I'm loving this series. #amreading

I've always heard this book was good, but no one ever told me how funny it was. I love it! And of course, underneath all that light wit is some powerful commentary about the reality of being Indian in a white world. Beautiful.

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist | David Levithan, Rachel Cohn

Sad to say that I'm really not enjoying it. Besides the fact that all the punk rock club hopping in Mahattan is completely irrelevant to me, I can only take so much of Rachel Cohn's chatty female character voices. David Levithan's male character POV redeems itself with his entertaining wordplay that he pumps with emotion. It may fit the characters and setting, but I also can't stand the cussing. Trying to decide if I'll bail on this book. 😞

BookNerdBritt I have this one but haven't read it yet. Reading Dash and Lily now but I see what you mean about the voices. 8y
SignedBooksJunkie @BookNerdBritt I am SO IN LOVE with the Dash & Lily duology so it baffles me how the same two authors could have written something I could dislike so much. 8y
BookNerdBritt @SignedBooksJunkie I'm really enjoying it so far and I have the second one on deck! I have Naomi and Ely as well but haven't read it yet. 8y
SignedBooksJunkie @BookNerdBritt Dash is everything. 😍 So hilariously sarcastic and thoughtful. I have yet to read Naomi and Ely. 8y

This story was an absolutely amazing ride. Aside from the much needed and important message above (which was left in the acknowledgments at the end), this book also has a full POC cast, fantasy that stems from a culture and mythology that isn't often presented in your mainstream YA, AND a lovely nod to the LGBTQ+ community. Read it!

"We swing like that, perfectly even, for about twenty seconds. Then we start to pull apart, the difference in our weight, or in our strength, or in the angle of our bodies--something about our bodies--preventing us from continuing like that forever."

So subtly symbolic.? Their lives can swing together, close enough to touch, but there's always something about their bodies--something about how A can't stay in one body--that breaks their harmony.
