Sing, Unburied, Sing
Sing, Unburied, Sing | Jesmyn Ward
A searing and profound Southern odyssey by National Book Award winner Jesmyn Ward. In Jesmyn Ward s first novel since her National Book Award winning Salvage the Bones, this singular American writer brings the archetypal road novel into rural twenty-first-century America. Drawing on Morrison and Faulkner, The Odyssey and the Old Testament, Ward gives us an epochal story, a journey through Mississippi s past and present that is both an intimate portrait of a family and an epic tale of hope and struggle. Ward is a major American writer, multiply awarded and universally lauded, and in Sing, Unburied, Sing she is at the height of her powers. Jojo and his toddler sister, Kayla, live with their grandparents, Mam and Pop, and the occasional presence of their drug-addicted mother, Leonie, on a farm on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. Leonie is simultaneously tormented and comforted by visions of her dead brother, which only come to her when she s high; Mam is dying of cancer; and quiet, steady Pop tries to run the household and teach Jojo how to be a man. When the white father of Leonie s children is released from prison, she packs her kids and a friend into her car and sets out across the state for Parchman farm, the Mississippi State Penitentiary, on a journey rife with danger and promise. Sing, Unburied, Sing grapples with the ugly truths at the heart of the American story and the power, and limitations, of the bonds of family. Rich with Ward s distinctive, musical language, Sing, Unburied, Sing is a majestic new work and an essential contribution to American literature."

Can‘t believe, it‘s already six months ago that I put this on my online libraries wish list. 😯 When I decided yesterday that it‘s time to check it out, I knew nothing about it, just, that it was one of those books found by a #LitsyMagic ✨. Now that I read the blurb I‘m not really sure if it fits my current reading mood. Sounds like strong stuff. Maybe a bit much for me at the moment.

I‘ve heard good things about this...can‘t wait.

UPDATE: this was unputdownable. It made me cry. Powerful. Poignant. Schools need to have this in their curriculum.

Loved this, though it want always easy to read. There's a sense of foreboding throughout, a strain of malice below the surface that i couldn't shake or wasnt supposed to. The magical realism was great and the setting incredibly vivid.

Unpopular opinion, but I have trouble getting into Jesmyn Ward. I appreciate that she confronts difficult & depressing topics that make me feel uncomfortable at times. Her writing is good for the most part, but I had particular issue with Leonie‘s “voice” (even more pronounced on audio), where her internal monologue just didn‘t seem to fit with her characterization. I really wanted to like this, but it was just lukewarm for me.

janeycanuck I felt similar - the writing was exquisite but it just didn‘t work for me. 3w

Ok, I admit that I struggled to understand all the themes of this book and just looked it up to get more information. I‘ve owned this book for at least a year & thought it would be an immediate favorite, so I was a little disappointed. The ending was really good. The mother reminded me of a lot of families I work with, so I struggled to have any empathy for her. I would be interested to learn more about Parchman. #TBRRead #wintergames

A book about so many things – family, race, love and loss. There is so much angst, grief and yearning in this book. Both the writing and story is hauntingly beautiful. Is it perfect? No. Will it stay with you? Yes.

Otherworldly and beautiful book. It centers around a family in the South--their moments of triumph, failure, and tragedy. There are three POVs, but the main character is 13 year old JoJo. It's a sort of coming of age story with magical realism (ghosts, rituals, potions) and doses of brutal reality (racism, prison, addiction, lynching, death). A straightforward story about complex topics, beautifully written.

Cinfhen Great choice!! I LOVED this book ~ JoJo 🥰 2mo

Grrr... Leonie is one of the most frustrasting characters ever! She has such a wonderful family and continues to make the absolute worst, most selfish decisions each step of the way! She does not deserve Jojo and Kayla or Pop and Maw.

Just had to get that out of my system because my own family is thinking I'm crazy for yelling at a book... #NotThe1stTime 🙄🤣

I need names of the people at Time that created this list. 🤯 I haven‘t read all 10 books but what I have read, some were pretty good, some were not, and one was just downright appalling (@megabooks and @emilyhaldi know you‘d agree!)

Lifeisasnap Which one did you find appalling? I want to see if it‘s the same one I think was just no bueno... 2mo

Nute Well, this list is interesting. I am surprised by several of the selections for a list titled The Best Books of the 2010s. This type of list will never make everyone happy.😬 2mo
AnneCecilie I‘ve read 9 out of 10 books. The only one I haven‘t read is The Sellout. I didn‘t like/ get the Goon Squad. I think they have the wrong Ng book. Other than that it‘s okay. 2mo

Jas16 I have read four out of ten (although a few others are on my shelves waiting for me to get to them within the next decade). Only one of them would have made my personal list. 2mo
Amiable Huh. I agree that I didn‘t actually LIKE all of these choices. But I guess I can buy into their inclusion on this list based on criteria like the specific impacts the book had on writing styles or changing the genre in some way. I guess. 2mo
sprainedbrain I stopped scrolling at Gone Girl. Wtf? 🙄 2mo

Jojo is a 13 year old boy coming to terms with life. His grandmother is dying, his Dad is in jail, his mother is a drug user and he's doing his best to cope with all of that and look after his little sister. Add to all this he sees and can talk to ghosts. I really enjoyed this. I really felt for Jojo, he's taken a lot on his young shoulders. It was beautifully written and very vivid in its descriptions.

Not my typical choice, but it was the selected book for the library‘s citywide read, so I figured it must be good. It was. It reminded me of a lot of different genres: Native American mythology, African mythology, “typical” fiction with a story arc and realistic characters— it had a lot. And it was heavy. Every tough topic was discussed: race, gender, age, DV, death... this story isn‘t for the faint of heart, but it‘s worth it.

A beautifully written and heartbreaking tale of how the past is never really behind us. JoJo is a 13 year old biracial boy dealing with his drug-addicted mother and imprisoned father. His black grandparents are raising him and his baby sister, while his white grandparents refuse to acknowledge his existence. His mother takes them on a road trip to pick up his newly-released father. Healthy doses of magical realism!

Congratulations on 100,000, @GrilledCheeseSamurai 🎉!

Choosing one favorite read of 2019, as per the rules of your #SixDigitSamurai #giveaway, is ridiculously hard! I‘ve read a handful of books this year that could easily make it on to a list of my favorite books of all time (not just this year). 😵 Edging slightly ahead of the pack is the tagged book. From the first sentence Jesmyn Ward has picked up my heart and is carrying it in her hands. I‘m tense because I‘m not sure if she‘s going to crush it or even give it back to me. I want to protect her 12 year old protagonist Jojo so much that I can‘t breathe in some places. But Ward isn‘t writing a thriller, isn‘t trying to push my buttons, her depiction of a life and a history is made brutal because it‘s authentic and one we rarely hear. 5 stars.

Centique I think Jojo is my favourite character of Ward‘s, but Salvage the Bones is probably my overall favourite of her novels. Both 5 stars though! 5mo

I am still giving it a Pick though because there were a couple times I couldn‘t wait to pick it back up to see what was going to happen. In Sing, Unburied, Sing, each character seeks a return home. Home, however, is not so much a place as it is a kind of peace, a song combining generations old and new. We can only go home when we have our biggest questions answered—answers that allow us to forgive. And if we cannot forgive, we remain as ghosts, crying out to the living who know pain well enough to recognize and respond to its call.
