Letters From Father Christmas
Letters From Father Christmas | J.R.R. Tolkien
111 posts | 83 read | 76 to read
Every December an envelope bearing a stamp from the North Pole would arrive for J.R.R. Tolkiens children. Inside would be a letter in a strange, spidery handwriting and a beautiful colored drawing or painting. The letters were from Father Christmas. They told wonderful tales of life at the North Pole: how the reindeer got loose and scattered presents all over the place; how the accident-prone North Polar Bear climbed the North Pole and fell through the roof of Father Christmass house into the dining room; how he broke the Moon into four pieces and made the Man in it fall into the back garden; how there were wars with the troublesome horde of goblins who lived in the caves beneath the house, and many more.No reader, young or old, can fail to be charmed by Tolkiens inventiveness in this classic holiday treat.

First book finished for the #24b42020

It was actually a reread, though the other times l read it, it was in ltalian translation.
This is such an adorable book. Tolkien's love for his children is so obvious in every words and in the special gift he gave them with his stories and his illustrations.

The last ones, written during WWII and knowing Priscilla was finally too old to still write to Father Christmas, are so sad they stole me some tears.

This is my lineup for the challenge. My plan is to finish the three on the left, which have started in different occasions.
The other is a NetGalley ARC. Don't think l'll be able to finish it, but l hope to make a good dentro in it.

I‘m home from a wonderful Christmas Eve service at church and have a quiet night to myself. So, I‘m enjoying a few more of Tolkien‘s Letters from Father Christmas along with a mug of tea and a slice of fruitcake. I know fruitcake is not often a favorite, but I love this recipe of my Grandma‘s and now make it each year for our family to continue her tradition. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all who celebrate!

I‘m rereading a few of Tolkien‘s letters from Father Christmas this evening with a very appropriate Christmas bookmark. I love the North Polar Bear as well as all of the creativity in these letters.

I love Santa stories and Tolkien, so Letters From Father Christmas was great. I think it's one of my favorite books I've read all year! Tolkien wrote letters in a uniquely shaky script as Santa for over 20 years for his four children. It's a beautifully imaginative story about the goings-on in the North Pole filled with elves, goblin wars, and a very clumsy Polar Bear. https://onthebl.org/2019/12/18/letters-from-father-christmas-by-j-r-r-tolkien/

It is the cutest holiday book I have read for a long time. It is a collection of actual letters written to Tolkien's children by Father Christmas. Of course we know who really wrote the letters. Each letter was usually accompanied by a drawing. Such as Santa's house at the North Pole. Most letters had a story about someone or happenings at the North Pole.⬇️

Patchshank I forgot all about this book. I've been wanting to read it, but I decided to save it for Christmas time and then just forgot about it 🤪. Thank you for reminding me.😋 1mo
TheSpineView The stories about the North Polar Bear were my favorites. He was always into something. I can just imagine how excited Tolkien's kids would have been to get a letter from Santa. 5⭐ 1mo
TheSpineView @Patchshank I loved it! The letters were so inventive and sometimes funny. I loved thecstory about how the North Polar Bear set off all the fireworks by accident. 1mo
See All 9 Comments
Patchshank @TheSpineView I found it on Kindle unlimited and I've read a few pages of it. So far I like how mishaps are incorporated into the letters. Like with the damaged chocolates. I wonder if there was an accident with the chocolates or if Tolkien would damage the chocolates on purpose to have something goofy to write and have evidence of. Like when parents leave cookie crumbs to show Santa ate the cookies. 1mo
TheSpineView @Patchshank Who knows. He had such a brilliant mind. 😊 1mo
tournevis I looove this book. It's my favourite Tolkien, by far. 1mo

I‘ve had this on my ereader for a while now and I finally decided to pick it up. This was a fun and sweet read as it contains a series of letters that J. R. R. Tolkien wrote over the years to his children in the guise of Santa. A nice addition to the ebook was audio narration of the letters on top of the print; the pictures and drawings sealed the deal. #WinterGames #TheFilthyAnimals #ImpulseRead #HolidayRead

It may not be Christmas, but it feels like the North Pole. In addition to the copies of letters, envelopes, & drawings Tolkien sent to his children as Father Christmas, this Prime edition provided the ability to listen to the letters, too. It was a nice collection from a time when Christmas wasn't about getting the biggest Beebo doll on the shelf, but traditions, stories, and family. We also get some Tolkien world-building as the years pass.

We may just have to start reading this ever Christmas even though it has already passed.

Also you will have a little zeitgeist of those years, even the impact of the War was present in the letters content. Art print from @BookBabe 3.7⭐️love the illustrations

This is a photo of J.R.R. Tolkien and his beloved children. I am so thankful that Litsy brought this charming book to me. In fact, if it had not been for Litsy, I would have never read any Tolkien! In my mind, his writing was for boys who love battles and dragons. I was so wrong! He created this beautifully illustrated tale of Santa at the North Pole answering the Christmas letters of Tolkien ‘s real life children. A master storyteller and father!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m so glad you enjoyed it! He did a great job using stories his boys would like, yes with adventures and dragons to keep their attention, but he also did a great job of weaving in some great wit, humor, and some wonderful themes that I‘ve found resonate no matter your age or gender. 13mo

Aww, the last letter is so sad. I think Tolkien was really sad to stop writing to his kids at Christmas. Sadness filtered in also in previous letters as his older kids fell out of the habit. But Priscilla is the younger and once she dropped the habit to write to Father Christmas, it was really over.

It was a wonderful book, and l'm not just talking about the stories and the illustrations.

I loved this one, just the perfect little stories for the season, and of course Tolkien wrote adorable letters to his children from Father Christmas, that included hilarious sidekicks, attacks by goblins, and a few new languages. His kids got not only stories and pictures, but cryptograms, and adventures, but also towards the end a great sense of empathy about the other children who had much less during the war years.

Love the illustration!
Tolkien's letters are becoming more melancholy and l find it really moving that tge war affected him so much that he even talks about it in these Christmas letters to his young daughter.
I remember that when l visited the exhibition in Oxford, l read that he volunteered to help refugee. And of course his sons were fighting in the war.
Much of the joviality of the first letters has gone.
