Humans of New York: Stories
Humans of New York: Stories | Brandon Stanton
In the summer of 2010, photographer Brandon Stanton began an ambitious project--to single-handedly create a photographic census of New York City. The photos he took and the accompanying interviews became the blog Humans of New York. In the first three years, his audience steadily grew from a few hundred to over one million. In 2013, his book Humans of New York, based on that blog, was published and immediately catapulted to the top of the NY Times Bestseller List. It has appeared on that list for over twenty-five weeks to date. The appeal of HONY has been so great that in the course of the next year Brandon's following increased tenfold to, now, over 12 million followers on Facebook. In the summer of 2014, the UN chose him to travel around the world on a goodwill mission that had followers meeting people from Iraq to the Ukraine to Mexico City via the photos he took.

When you visit the city, consider a drink at:

Chrissyreadit Oh!!! Why did I live there in the 80‘s and 90‘s when clubs were in????? I‘m feeling so homesick! Although I probably could not afford most of those places. 5y
Tonton @Chrissyreadit Where were you? I was on Columbus between 77th and 78th. I miss the city terribly. (Living in Tokyo now.) 5y
Butterfinger Ooh. That is neat. 5y

Chrissyreadit @Tonton I was in Ozone Park Queens, and Astoria Queens Just a ride on the A train away, (or E or F occasionally) I also worked for a couple years for YAI in several Manhattan group homes. Mostly on the lower East side. Our main office was on 54th and 8th I think...😁 you were right in the heart of it! 5y
Tonton @Chrissyreadit Whoa! I was in Ozone Park for a year before making the move to Manhattan! I worked in an office on 55th between 6th and 7th. Good times! 5y
Chrissyreadit @Tonton did you grow up in Ozone Park? Such a small world! 5y
Chrissyreadit Also my son wants to live in Japan. He has been studying Japanese over Skype with a woman in Japan for over three years. (Through italki) do you like it there? 5y
Tonton @Chrissyreadit In Jersey before Ozone Park. It‘s great to hear about your son learning Japanese. Yes, I like it here though sometimes I dream about bagels and getting a real slice of pizza N.Y. plain cheese.😎 5y

HONY: Stories are people‘s sharing something personal of themselves with photographer Brandon Stanton captured on the streets of NYC.

“I‘m an opera singer.”
“What‘s the highest note you can hit?”
“An F-sharp.”
“What does that sound like?”

I love the juxtaposition of the photos with the quotes from the subjects. Like, there‘s a reason I‘ve followed him on social media for years. So of course I loved this book. It‘s a quick read, but considering it‘s all photos and accompanying quotes of varying length, that‘s no surprise. Now I get to figure out yet another book to start.

Maybel approves this book (she was actually stretching and yawning, thus perfect timing)! This one is amazing. It takes guts to do what Brandon Stanton does— just walk up to people and talk to them. You‘ll laugh, smile, cry, think. It makes you want to hit the street and talk to people. You never know where someone has been or where they‘re trying to go. Who knows? It could be the best thing to happen to them, or you!

For today's #SeasonsReadings2016 prompt for #BookWithPictures I chose Humans of New York: Stories. This Facebook photo project is a bright spot on the internet. I have both of these compilations and they are great to flip through or read page by page. The stories always make me think about how much people from all over the world have in common.

cathysaid LOVE reading these on FB. Did you read the recent series, after the election, where he documented stories from counties (I think in Michigan) where they voted Trump? Poignant stories that helped give me some perspective. 8y
MallenNC @cathysaid I love when he does a special series. And I like that he's used the project's popularity to raise awareness and money for different causes, like schools, cancer research, and refugees. 8y

I adored this book. Brandon Stanton stops strangers in New York and takes pictures and talks to them for twenty minutes and this contains the responses. He chats to the young, old, business people, homeless and punks etc the city is so diverse and it makes you aware that everyone has a story to tell and many with heart breaks or triumphs. If you like to "'People Watch" ( My 10 yr old says it like its an established hobby!?) you will love this!!?X
