The Unquiet Dead: A Novel | Ausma Zehanat Khan
168 posts | 87 read | 2 reading | 195 to read
Despite their many differences, Detective Rachel Getty trusts her boss, Esa Khattak, implicitly. But she's still uneasy at Khattak's tight-lipped secrecy when he asks her to look into Christopher Drayton's death. Drayton's apparently accidental fall from a cliff doesn't seem to warrant a police investigation, particularly not from Rachel and Khattak's team, which handles minority-sensitive cases. But when she learns that Drayton may have been living under an assumed name, Rachel begins to understand why Khattak is tip-toeing around this case. It soon comes to light that Drayton may have been a war criminal with ties to the Srebrenica massacre of 1995. If that's true, any number of people might have had reason to help Drayton to his death, and a murder investigation could have far-reaching ripples throughout the community. But as Rachel and Khattak dig deeper into the life and death of Christopher Drayton, every question seems to lead only to more questions, with no easy answers. Had the specters of Srebrenica returned to haunt Drayton at the end, or had he been keeping secrets of an entirely different nature? Or, after all, did a man just fall to his death from the Bluffs? In her spellbinding debut, Ausma Zehanat Khan has written a complex and provocative story of loss, redemption, and the cost of justice that will linger with readers long after turning the final page.

In this powerful debut Asuma Zehanat Khan applies her knowledge of international human rights law (a Ph.D) to bring us a devastating story that confronts the horrors of Srebrenica. Chapter heads from tribunal testimonies lead us into a tale of modern sorrow and what passes for justice.

Beautifully written. Very Important. I‘ve already ordered her next.

Cathythoughts I really liked it too & have the second , didn‘t read it yet though 3mo

#Booked2019 #Summer #MuslimAuthorOrMC

This is one of the better police detective novels I‘ve ever read. I did loads of research into WWII for my graduate work, but I‘m embarrassed to say that my knowledge of the war crimes that took place in Bosnia in the ‘90s is limited. I found myself recognizing so many tactics used by the Nazis that I felt an instinctive nausea. This book was like remedial reading for me in that it taught me things that I⬇️

gradcat ⬆️ (Cont.) should already know. The author is a scholar in human rights law, so what one gains from this novel are data and facts from the tribunal that serve to amplify, but not buttress, the story here. The author is not at all heavy-handed; the testimony from the war crimes tribunal is woven into the story naturally. The other interesting part of this for me was in learning how Canada treats its refugees in comparison to the United States. ⬇️ (edited) 3mo
gradcat ⬆️ (Cont.) Oh, what a difference a border makes! ♥️ 3mo

Because one can never have too many series ongoing. #StartASeries Quite different from my typical British murder and mayhem picks as it is a geopolitical thriller set in Canada. The recounting of the genocide and rape camps in Bosnia was breathtaking. Not at all an easy read but an important one. 4🌟 👇🏼

This is a thought provoking and haunting mystery, the first in the series featuring Inspector Khattak and Sergeant Getty. Khan writes a compelling narrative - I was more focused on her respectful way of presenting some very difficult subject matter as it related to the characters. The author‘s note at the end provides more information about the topics discussed in the book. Well done, and I will definitely continue the series!

Mehso-so

Mixed thoughts. Impressed by the author‘s credentials, I wanted to learn more about the war crimes committed in Bosnia. Parts of this story were harrowing and important, but it felt inconsistent. I wasn‘t sure about incorporating this story of war crimes into a story about two Canadian detectives. There was so much commentary on what everyone looked like which I found jarring. I know I‘m in the minority as this book has had great reviews...

Caroline2 I felt the same! I wasnt overly impressed with this one either! 🤷‍♀️ 8mo

ravenlee A surprising resource for info on what the war was like for the people living through it is Rick Steves‘ travel shows in the area. It‘s pretty superficial, being a half-hour travel show, but he talks to the people who were just trying to live their lives. 9mo

A great start to the series, featuring Esa Khattak and his partner Rachel Getty (#femaledetective alert). Takes place not far from where I used to live in Scarborough. I can‘t pick one #favoriteseries, but the Getty/Khattak mysteries are definitely near the top of any list of beloved books. This was a great story. It is definitely a slow build but it is worth it in the end. I enjoyed Esa and Rachel‘s partnership, and how it was portrayed. Khan avoids the typical dynamic which I see in way too many novels involving police or FBI characters (which is just the two main characters constantly butting heads), and it made the story much more enjoyable. I will definitely continue this series. 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

DGRachel @CaitZ She‘s a gifted writer. Her series are in publication order in my photo. The first four are her Khattak/Getty mysteries, the next two are her fantasy series set in the Middle East, and the very last one is a nonfiction MG book she did about Ramadan. 12mo

@ScorpioBookDreams Rachael, thanks so much for choosing this book for #whodunituk - it's given me a new perspective and I've learnt a lot about the Bosnian War. It's also helped me fulfil a prompt for next year's #booked2019 - I'm using book 2 for Muslim author or MC! @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft

Cinfhen Wonderful!!! I‘ve heard such good things about this series 💚👍🏻 12mo
DGRachel I love this series! I‘m so glad you enjoyed this book! 12mo

Mehso-so

The negatives: the writing disappointed me at times. The characterization of the MCs/their relationships told me it was deeper than the interactions earned on the page. The positives: the story was fantastic, difficult, complicated, affecting. I couldn‘t put the second half down. I appreciated the endnotes. They gave explanations for the testimony quoted throughout and recs for books on Bosnia, which I was thinking the whole time I needed to find.

@Caroline2 thank you so much for the goodies in with the next #whodunituk - I have a feeling the chocolate lollies won't last long!

In answer to your question in the card, I feel ok in myself but I think the Crohn's disease is still playing up slightly 😕

Well this was a reverting read! I didn‘t know much about the wars involved in the break up of Yugoslavia in the 1990s so it‘s was interesting to learn about that! The murder mystery was pretty predictable but I liked the writing style! I‘d recommend this to fans of Louise Penny. It reminded me of, ‘Bury your dead‘. #whodunituk on to you @jenniferw88

RachelO That sounds really interesting! 1y
TrishB Looking forward to this one too! 1y

This was so much more than just a mystery or procedural, it was a powerful and compelling novel that touched on war crimes, justice thwarted, incredible loss, and a whole community irrevocably marked by tragedy. Though the subject matter was brutal at times, it was never twisted into a spectacle. And the writing was so deft that I found it hooked me and didn't let me go again until the end. I will definitely be reading more in this series!

Oh, Canada! 🇨🇦
How your authors make me long to visit you!

This book is a first rate mystery, with a lot of history, ethics, & psychology thrown in. I loved it, and will certainly continue with the series.

Detective Khattak and partner Rachel Getty investigate a possible murder linked with atrocities committed in Bosnia. Well written, thought provoking, emotionally engaging.

The National Library of Sarajevo is burning.

A radio broadcast instructed Muslims to put white ribbons around their arms, go outside, form columns and head towards the main square.

Esa Khattak is a Canadian Detective who‘s also a Muslim. I enjoy his thoughts about faith & the pursuit of justice.

“He no longer possessed the hot-blooded certainties of youth that a prayer missed or delayed would bring about a concomitant judgement of sin. Time had taught him to view his faith through the prism of compassion: when ritual was sacrificed in pursuit of the very values it was meant to inspire, there could be no judgment, no sin.”

Bookquilter Seriously a great series that is well written and will open you‘re eye to the world. 1y

It‘s time to begin this month‘s #Whodunituk selection.

The book‘s summary sounds fascinating. Thanks so much for selecting it, @ScorpioBookDreams , & for administering our club. Thanks for sending it on to me, @DeborahSmall , along with the lovely chocolate, which is long gone! It all arrived after I returned from Poland, and as I was working on #DickensInSeptember I‘m starting this a bit late. It‘ll be on its way to you soon, @Caroline2 !

I have read several books set in #Canada but would really like to read more. I've chosen our beloved Anne of Green Gables, a great nonfiction about an historic event that was unknown to me, and two wonderful mystery series. I haven't caught up with Inspector Gamache yet, but Bury Your Dead is my favorite so far. The tagged book is the first in a series about a Muslim detective and his partner who deal with human rights cases. #AugustIsATrip

vkois88 Bury Your Dead sounds good! 1y
MallenNC @vkois88 It is! The whole series builds on itself and that one had a lot of story threads. I liked it a lot. 1y
vkois88 I'll have to keep an eye out for it 😊 1y
