An important, difficult, challenging, personal story of creativity, love, support, and survival. We're so lucky that Jarrett has shared his story. For the kids who see themselves here, l think this book will be invaluable.
What a tremendous writer! Not only is this a compelling true crime mystery, it's a snapshot of a very specifc slice of California life. The author's work-- both the book and her research-- have proven to be critically important and will be remembered. She should also be honored as a talented voice in narrative nonfiction and true cringe.
"His voice was fortified with stately intonation as deliberately as breakfast cereal is fortified with vitamin C."
Best description of a voice ever?
One of my favorite authors in any genre. Looking forward to meeting the de la Cruz family.
A Christmas gift from me to me for my Amtrak ride back to NYC. #IReadYA #MarissaMeyer
Picked this up for some personal essay writing inspiration...insomnia binge read finished it feeling like I was hanging out with a friend of a friend.
Have you ever finished a book and been sad that it's by a debut author because that means there's nothing else to read by them just yet? That's where I'm at.
Some after work, outdoor reading. So far, so awesome.
Decided I need some real science with no "alternative facts."
"[Life] is a series of endless happy beginnings."
Literally just finished reading MORE HAPPY THAN NOT (at 2am, in a Brooklyn bar, while my boyfriend djs a New Year's Eve party) with tears in my eyes. What a way to start 2017.
The only possible combination for today. #maytheforcebewithher
Black and white and red all over. Afternoon plans are set!
Starting on this (over breakfast tacos) and was immediately charmed by Ruthie! Looking forward to following her journey.
Loved the book when it came out and I've been waiting for the right moment to pick it up again. Saw The Magnificent Seven and now is the time. Can't wait to hang out with Nayeli and Atomiko again!
Fat Kid Rules the World is one of my favorite punk rock books. Litsy rocks just as hard. Glad to say hello and cheer them on at the Brooklyn Book Fest today. #BKLovesLitsy
Why why why did I wait so long to read this? So many memories. Being a teen in NYC in the 80s was kind of amazing. Sometimes I forget. Sheesh.
Another example of the right book at the wrong time. I tried reading this a year ago and couldn't get past the first few pages. Picked it up now and I'm completely enthralled. Sometimes you just need to go back and try again.
It's charming and funny and completely predictable. I read this in one sitting as a fluffy distraction. I am surprised it published under a teen imprint. Didn't feel like that's the audience at all.
A librarian friend compared this to Ken Bruen (one of the few mystery-thriller writers I really love) so this was on my TBR list separate from all the hype. It doesn't have the humor of Bruen, but the solid unreliable narrator sold me. Turned out to be a perfect vacation read.
A simple early chapter book, the book takes on big ideas about bullying, being true to yourself, and taking responsibility for your actions. Doesn't hurt that Lola is a bicultural soccer loving journal keeping smart girl! I've got high hopes for the series.
If you haven't read MARCH yet, today should be the reason it jumps to the top of your to be read pile. #nobillnobreak #goodtrouble #graphicnovel
I'm home with a terrible summer cold. ONCE WAS A TIME has proven to be the perfect read. The real issues of friendship and family and growing up framed by a (somehow) non-sci-fi time travel adventure. So glad this called to me from the TBR shelf!
I've read bits and pieces of this over the years, but now seems like the opportune time to read the whole thing.
Simply put, THE NAME OF THE ROSE for teens. Great mystery, action, characters-- and some super smart moments kept me guessing.
"Because I am exactly where I should be, doing exactly what I should be doing. That is peace." -Vola, PAX page 102
The kind of chapter title that worries me/makes me sad in advance. And a few pages later, "...once in a while it's good to be ridiculous and amazing."
This had been on my shelf, in ARC for years. Maybe I let it sit too long? I wanted to love it, but I ended up feeling like it was written for people who are unfamiliar with the Tudors and don't read historical fiction. I suppose I wanted more gravitas.
"Us girls deserve more than one song. We deserve more than one pledge of solidarity. We deserve better songs than any boy will ever write about us."
from 'Emo: Where the Girls Aren't' (p 20)
I believe this book should be in every high school in this country. Important issues, important conversations. #RashadIsAbsentAgainToday
