The Three Pigs | David Wiesner
post image

The Three Pigs by David Wiesner is a Caldecott award winning book! This MF book is Davis spinoff of the Traditional Literature story The Three Little Pigs. This book starts off as the normal story of The Three Little Pigs, but takes an adventure through many other Traditional Literature books. In the end, they all join to live in one story. #ucflae3414sp21

tclivio This would go great with UDL 3.1 (activate or supply background knowledge) as well as EL 45 (use Venn diagrams to contrast and compare activities). This would be great to use to compare with the original story. http://maeganrasmussen.weebly.com/uploads/1/1/7/2/11727042/lessonplan1.pdf This is also such a cute activity to have students create their own house for the pigs! 4y
emilypalkovich Great post! I love the activity you linked. I will definitely consider using this in my classroom one day! This book looks so cute and it‘s always fun reading someone‘s take on a classic story. 4y
DrSpalding So I am guessing that you were inspired by your resource for your own storytelling! You did this very well and we were impressed by your props. This is a very different version of the original story! Universal design 3.1 and English learner 45 would work well to compare the original story with this as you put it, spin off. 4y

Color Zoo | Lois Ehlert

This Caldecott Award winning book is a great representation on how you can use reading through other subjects. This NF book is a great book to teach shapes in math. This book introduces so many shapes, how you can combine them, what you can make with them, and so on. This would be a great book to have students PR. This goes great with El 4 (link lesson topic to students prior knowledge.) #ucflae3414sp21

tclivio This also pairs great with the UDL 7.2 (optimize relevance, value, and authenticity.) https://www.brighthubeducation.com/preschool-crafts-activities/81192-color-zoo-t... This website includes a fun activity where students can create "zoo art", just like they read in the book! 4y
DrSpalding Again, you made good use of your time in the CMC. Arts integration specifically with this title in a kindergarten classroom could be very beneficial to aid their comprehension. Knowing that this author incorporates vivid imagery, you could work on shapes and colors with this book as well. Both are standards in kindergarten. 4y
DrSpalding This author writes specifically for the primary grades. This would be a wonderful book to use in a kindergarten classroom to not only integrate the arts but also teach color and shapes. 4y

No, David! | David Shannon
post image

No, David by David Shannon is a Caldecott award winning book! No, David is a book about a little boy named david, and his mother who is always telling him what not to do. She is always telling him "don't do that" or "be quiet" or "stop that!" At the end of the story, you can tell just from the illustrations that David is upset, but is instantly better when his mom hugs him and tells him that she loves him! #ucflae3414sp21

tclivio No, David received it's award because of its amazing illustrations. Most of the story is solely told just with the pictures in it! This book is great to teach students how to make connections with books through illustrations, and would be a great read aloud. This connects with UDL 1.3 (offer alternatives for visual information). The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs by Jon Sciezka, is a spin-off of one of everyone's favorites, The 3 Little Pigs. This book is told from the wolf's perspective! He claims that he's not this big bad wolf that everyone made him out to be. All he was trying to do was knock on a few neighbors doors to find some sugar to make a birthday cake for his grandma! It wasn't his fault that the pigs built their houses in unsteady ways! #ucflae3414sp21

tclivio This story would be a great read aloud. Since many students have already heard the story of the 3 Little Pigs, it would be great for them to compare and contrast the two. A Very Special Snowflake is a RF book written by Don Hoffman. This book is about a pair of siblings and their new dog, Snowflake. Snowflake has white fur, just like the color of the snow outside! When the kids take Snowflake outside, he blended with the snow, and they couldn't find him! They went to each person in the neighborhood to ask if they had seen Snowflake, but each person thought that they were asking about the snow, not their dog!

tclivio In the end, they find Snowflake when they see a moving red ball, and the neighbors come to realize who Snowflake is! This book would best be taught with individual reading. Throughout the book, there is an underlying pattern of the children asking each neighbor if they have seen Snowflake, and each neighbor thinking that they are talking about snow. Have the students recognize and identify these patterns throughout the book. 4y
tclivio Make sure to let students know multiple times to look out for the repetition while they are reading ! This goes with UDL 3.2 (highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships). It also goes with EL 15 (reinforce the key ideas you present again and again). These can be achieved with the following website http://thepicturebookteachersedition.blogspot.com/2012/02/very-special-snowflake.... 4y

Madeline Finn and the Library Dog is a cute RF book about a girl overcoming her fear of reading. In this book, Madeline Finn doesn't like to read especially not out loud. She's let down after never getting a star, but instead, stickers that just say keep trying. Madeline goes to the library when the librarian has her read to a dog named Bonnie! Madeline loved reading to Bonnie, especially since she wasn't afraid to make a mistake in front of her!

tclivio Madeline overcame a lot when reading with Bonnie, and finally went on to earn a star in school! This book would be a great book to read with your students as a read aloud. Goodnight IPad is a "parody for the next generation". It's based on Margaret Wise Brown's Goodnight Moon. This book is a RF about a kid who lives with many electronics. When it's time to go to bed, the old lady takes each electronic away one by one, until all they're left with is a book, which just so happens to be Goodnight Moon! This book would be great to teach as partner work. Students will be given both Goodnight IPad, and Goodnight Moon.

tclivio This comes from the lesson plan on https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Goodnight-iPad-Lesson-Plan-2305823?s.... Through this, students will be able to make a text to text connection. This book is about a dad who does his daughters hair for the very first time. It's an amazing book that people love for its diversity!
