Princesse de Cleves (Revised)
Princesse de Cleves (Revised) | Madame De Lafayette, Madame De La Fayette, La Fayette
6 posts | 18 read | 7 to read
Set towards the end of the reign of Henry II of France, "The Princesse de Cleves"(1678) tells of the unspoken, unrequited love between the fair, noble Mme de Cleves, who is married to a loyal and faithful man, and the Duc de Nemours, a handsome man most female courtiers find irresistible. Warned by her mother against admitting her passion, Mme de Cleves hides her feelings from her fellow courtiers, until she finally confesses to her husband - an act that brings tragic consequences for all. Described as France's first modern novel, "The Princesse de Cleves"is an exquisite and profound analysis of the human heart, and a moving depiction of the inseparability of love and anguish. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators."

I can‘t resist an early novel especially not one written by a French woman!

#BookReport week 44/19

The Man who Saw Everything was a quick read and everything I hoped for.
The Princess of Cleves, a kind of 18th century soap, I had to bail on. I used it for the public domain prompt for #Booked2019 though.
The Lowland had been on my shelves since 2014. I finally read it because it is set in Rhode Island, a state I still needed for #ReadingUSA2019. I enjoyed it much more than I anticipated.

So I had a good reading week!

squirrelbrain 😁👍 Great week! 5y
Cinfhen Nice week!!! I had a bail too!!!! 5y
Lcsmcat I‘ve got The Lowland on my shelf. Maybe I should bump it up. 5y

Bailedbailed

A classic from the #1001books list. Really short but I didn't manage to finish it. I think it is supposed to be a kind of classic soap novel but I really couldn't keep track of all the character. Sometimes it seemed as if in every other sentence a new character was introduced or mentioned. Not for me!

#Booked2019 #PublicDomain

Cathythoughts I‘m useless with loads of characters ... can‘t keep track at all 🤷🏼‍♀️ 5y
BarbaraBB @Cathythoughts Neither do I 🙈 5y
Reviewsbylola That‘s a bummer. 5y

Bailedbailed

For such a short book, this felt like it was never going to end. I enjoy classics, but the prose was a little too thick for me in this one.

Wonderfully frothy soap opera full of historical inaccuracies.

It's clearly Mary Queen of Scots season in my house: I have finally started this from my TBR shelf, as she is one of the characters in this very early novel. (I am interested in the history of the novel.)

annahenke Are you a purist or have you watched the delightful historical blasphemy that is the TV show Reign?? 😊 8y
zsuzsanna_reads I'm just a purist :-) I just couldn't watch the Tudors, so haven't even tried Reign yet. Is it worth trying? 8y
LeahBergen @zsuzsanna_reads I couldn't watch The Tudors. I tried the first episode and it drove me crazy. I only made it about 2 minutes into Reign. 😂 8y
