Rogue Lawyer
Rogue Lawyer | John Grisham
On the right side of the law. Sort of. Sebastian Rudd is not your typical street lawyer. He works out of a customized bulletproof van, complete with Wi-Fi, a bar, a small fridge, fine leather chairs, a hidden gun compartment, and a heavily armed driver. He has no firm, no partners, no associates, and only one employee, his driver, whos also his bodyguard, law clerk, confidant, and golf caddy. He lives alone in a small but extremely safe penthouse apartment, and his primary piece of furniture is a vintage pool table. He drinks small-batch bourbon and carries a gun. Sebastian defends people other lawyers wont go near: a drug-addled, tattooed kid rumored to be in a satanic cult, who is accused of molesting and murdering two little girls; a vicious crime lord on death row; a homeowner arrested for shooting at a SWAT team that mistakenly invaded his house. Why these clients? Because he believes everyone is entitled to a fair trial, even if he, Sebastian, has to cheat to secure one. He hates injustice, doesnt like insurance companies, banks, or big corporations; he distrusts all levels of government and laughs at the justice systems notions of ethical behavior. Sebastian Rudd is one of John Grishams most colorful, outrageous, and vividly drawn characters yet. Gritty, witty, and impossible to put down, Rogue Lawyer showcases the master of the legal thriller at his very best.

Sebastian Rudd is one heck of a rogue lawyer. I like a character who goes against the grain and pushes the limits, especially when dealing with the criminal justice system. While he operates outside of the box, he advocates for people and fights the system when the system is wrong. He is a flawed character and knows his weaknesses. Rudd defends some interesting individuals that often leads him into dangerous situations. #MountTBR

Well this was a fun read - I mean if you are going to go rogue alongside a lawyer it might as well be one created by John Grisham! Oh and maybe check out a cage fight :)

I kept putting this down to read other books. I had a hard time with Rudd in particular. At first I thought he was sexist and racist and anti-police and then when it became clear that he‘s disgusted with everyone I decided he was simply an awful person. I get that his job ruined his faith in humanity but does that mean he has to be mean? I found Partner to be a more compelling character and would‘ve likely enjoyed this book more in his POV.

I do not know how I missed reading this one. I thought I had a hardcover of all his books! I am after all a "Mississippi Girl" ! This book was set up as a group or vignette of stories about Attorney Sebastian Rudd. He is the lawyer you want when you are in deep trouble. Highly recommend.

My newest audiobook. When you need some fun, read a John Grisham. He‘s had some misses, but I‘m enjoying this one so far. #fluff

JillR I have a soft spot for a John Grisham too! 5y

I haven't met many Grisham books I didn't like. With this book in particular, I found I related very strongly to Sebastian (especially after a day like today!) - and no, my practice doesn't put me in the same line of danger as does his 😉 very relatable character. I enjoyed the different style of prose compared to Grisham's other novels, in more of a short story format than a novel. The praise on the cover says it all.

"It's just as well that we don't believe in fair trials because we damned sure don't have them. The presumption of innocence is now the presumption of guilt. The burden of proof is a travesty because the truth is often lies. Guilt beyond a reasonable doubt means if he probably did it, then let's get him off the streets."

This was a different type of book from John Grisham.--not really focused on a single case but more on a single character. Criminal defense lawyer Sebastion Rudd is a flawed yet humorous and likeable character. It will be interesting to see if Grisham brings him back in future books.

Yeah....that was the most lack luster....dead ass....ending I‘ve ever read. This had to much potential and it just fell flat. I seriously hope my second Grisham experience will be better than my first! #johngrisham #books #canteven

I am probably a little more than half through and it‘s good. I would say it‘s a bit of a bite off the Lincoln Lawyer. I think Grisham could really take this character into a series. #books #booklover #bookaddict #reader #johnGrisham

Many people didn't seem too thrilled with the format that seemed like a group of intertwined short stories. Oddly enough I liked it; really I'd like to see another Grisham book with the same format. Then again, after reading Gray Mountain and The Confession, I may have simply been thrilled to have a book that wasn't overly preachy.

Blueberry I remember not liking it at first but then the threads started tying together and I ended up really liked it. 7y
saguarosally @Blueberry I can definitely see that. It did seem disjointed at first. 7y

Found a bookstore yesterday where you can lean back in a chair and look at heaven, or at least shelves of books. Book tagged is one of my current audiobooks. #getindie #mostlybooks

Finished this one yesterday. It took me the longest time to get over the narrator who seemed to be on a mission to never inflect any emotion whatsoever. Towards the end he did finally seem to perk up a bit though. The book was fair. I like Grisham's older stuff a lot better. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Howard_L Don‘t know if I‘ll continue reading or bail. I don‘t like the main character and while that‘s not a deal breaker, I don‘t like his narrative voice either. Briefly forgot it was Grisham and was ready to blame Patterson and his ghostwriters. 2y

I love a John Grisham book. I think if this book had been written by anybody other than John Grisham I may not have given it a so-so, but rather a pan. I think my so-so has more to do with the fact that the book was not what I was expecting. So, it's me and not Mr. Grisham. That being said, I will continue to read anything and everything that Mr. Grisham writes.

MrBook 😊🙌🏻 7y
Prairiegirl_reading To me it was more a collection of short stories. Not good. But I agree I will continue to read his books too. 7y
Blueberry I also thought it seemed like a short story collection and didn't like it until it all began to tie together and I gradually liked it alot. I gave it 4 stars at Goodreads. 7y

Was okay as a short-stint 'late night' read (#insomniabuster), but it seems Grisham is falling into the formulaic ditch.

⭐️⭐️ I was looking forward to the latest Grisham novel but was left disappointed. I assume he tried to follow the approach of a few short stories that flow into each other at the end but it fell rather flat.

I'll continue to read it bc it's John Grisham and his writing is engaging, but I'm about 3/4 of the way done with this book, and I haven't felt like there is any kind of actual story. Some of his cases are interesting, but I don't see this going anywhere.

Have had this one bought ever since the day it came out, and other books keep cutting in front of it somehow. But Grisham, he always satisfies, and this one pulled good reviews. I got no excuse. Soon, soon.
