Wreck and Order: A Novel | Hannah Tennant-Moore
18 posts | 11 read | 12 to read
A boldly candid, raw portrait of a young woman's search for meaning and purpose in an indifferent worldDecisively aimless, self-destructive, and impulsively in and out of love, Elsie is a young woman who feels stuck. She has a tumultuous relationship with an abusive boyfriend, a dead-end job at a newspaper, and a sharp intelligence thats constantly at odds with her many bad decisions. When her initial attempts to improve her life go awry, Elsie decides that a dramatic change is the only solution. An auto-didact who prefers the education of travel to college, Elsie uses an inheritance to support her as she travels to Paris and Sri Lanka, hoping to accumulate experiences, create connections, and discover a new way to live. Along the way, she meets men and women who challenge and provoke her towards the change she genuinely hopes to find. But in the end, she must still come face-to-face with herself.Whole-hearted, fiercely honest and inexorably human, Wreck and Order is a stirring debut that, in mirroring one young woman's dizzying quest for answers, illuminates the important questions that drive us all. From the Hardcover edition.

Bailedbailed

I'm on a mission to clear books off my TBR shelf (very slowly) and picked this up but 30 pages in and I'm giving up. There's nothing wrong with the writing - it's definitely a very confident, young voice. Maybe it's just not for me. But after getting through some 30 pages, I realized that I really didn't care for the narrator or her story and that I've got plenty more books to spend my reading time on.

batsy Good call. I hated this one. 6y
merelybookish Congrats! It's so freeing to realize you can bail on books you don't like! 6y
Arcana I‘ve bailed on a lot of books lately, and it feels SO good to be able to move on and start a better book. 6y

Great news! The wrecked looking home next to us has been bought by someone who has already started the renovation process. Finally the eyesore will be gone.

Am I getting old and crotchety? I'm not loving this so far and I'm wondering if it's the millennial narrator. My post-millennial pup is unimpressed so far too. Anyone else read it and willing to weigh in?

What a profound quote tucked 90% of the way through a book it seems like many people gave up on.

Thoughts?

Brona I'm reading a book about menopause called The Middlepause that is covering some of the same stuff...& the weird freeing but disconcerting realisation that comes with the invisibility of being an older woman. Suddenly you're looking at all that shit from the other side. 8y
Posemn I agree @Brona! It is an interesting experience to realize you have hit that invisibility stage. 8y

2.5 stars. Elsie is a wreck like a lot of people on their early 20's,but will she ever find the direction her life is supposed my one going on? I thought I was going to like this so much more. Full review at http://whatchatreadin.blogspot.com

A coming of age story with a rather pathetic, self destructive protagonist. The writing is actually very good but, I just couldn't connect with the Elise to make this a more satisfying experience. Has anyone read it?

whelanmaria Even though it was short, I had a very hard time getting through it because I really didn't enjoy the emotional distance of the protagonist. The writing was impressive but I definitely struggled! 8y
BibliophileBytheSea @whelanmaria - I'm glad to know it wasn't just me. Like a train wreck, I was, however, curious enough to see it though LOL 8y

Pickpick

For those underwhelmed by Eat,Pray,Love & wanted REAL mess: a really complicated female narrator, real intense examination of sex and addiction behaviors, [TRIGGER WARNING] & escape to a Buddhist country that wasn't based in romanticizing poverty/exotic. This may be for you. Thought provoking. Raw

squibblesreads I'm glad you like this! The ratings on goodreads aren't great but it seems right up my alley and I have it so I might try it! 😊 8y
HardcoverHearts @squibblesreads : it's not an easy or feel good read and the ending isn't buttoned up like one may expect. But if you like provocation in your reading material, this could be a good one. It's still sitting with me, which is one of my requirements to say I liked a book. It's unflinching. Good luck 8y
squibblesreads I definitely do not like buttoned up, vanilla writing or characters. I love books that make me think and not necessarily like them! I'll give it a try! 😊 8y

Only 3 chapters in and this is grabbing me with all sorts of feminist and Buddhist perspectives in the form of a bold & unflinching narrator hellbent on self destruction. I don't know if I like her, but I both relate to her & want to see what she will do next. Compelling and I hope it sustains.

Reading the news alone was less depressing than trying to do something about it.
