Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales
Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales: Donner Dinner Party | Nathan Hale
10 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
The Donner Party expedition is one of the most notorious stories in all of American history. Its also a fascinating snapshot of the westward expansion of the United States, and the families and individuals who sacrificed so much to build new lives in a largely unknown landscape. From the preparation for the journey to each disastrous leg of the trip, this book shows the specific bad decisions that led to the partys predicament in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The graphic novel focuses on the struggles of the Reed family to tell the true story of the catastrophic journey. This popular topic is a perfect addition to the Nathan Hales Hazardous Tales brand, and a great showcase for Hales storytelling skills. Praise for Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales: Donner Dinner Party "This informative graphic novel capitalizes on enticingly gross history to great effect, balancing raw facts with strong storytelling." --Booklist Awards YALSA's Great Graphic Novels for Teens List 2014 New York Public Librarys list: Childrens Books list: 100 Titles for Reading and Sharing 2013 Notable Social Studies Trade Books for Young People 2014

This was a fantastic #NonFictionGraphicNovel It is the story of the Donner Party told by the soon to be hanged Nathan Hale to his executioners. The story is really well researched & just well done. I'm planning on checking out a few other in this series & buying some for my nephews.

Pretty gruesome tale that will intrigue even the most reluctant of readers. (With a bit of humor mixed in for comic relief.)😵 Definitely going to check out the rest of the Hazardous Tales.

If these were available when I was in school, I would have had better grades!!! A fun, readable and information packed graphic novel about the Donner party and their wagon expedition across the country! It really puts driving 10 hours into perspective!! A must read for kids interested in American history but even more for reluctant readers! I'm already planning on getting through the series!

We had some books to return so I hit up my favorite children's librarian for suggestions on non fiction middle grade graphic novels. We found this awesome series by "Nathan Hale" about historic events and this great biography on Amelia Earhart!

BookInMyHands One day I came home to find my husband reading this to my three and five year old. They loved it 😬. Not my first choice for that age group though... 8y
AmandaL My 11 y.o. just read most of the books in this series. They are a great mix of fun and history. 👍 8y
AmandaL And I think there's lots of tongue-in-cheek humor that would get Leslie Knope approval - I just saw the reference 😂 8y

Young girl happily chooses graphic novel DONNER DINNER PARTY. Mom is concerned it's too dark. Flipping through, exclaims, "Cannibalism!" Daughter immediately replies, that Greek myth book you made me read had cannibalism. Touché, little girl. Touché
