Gender Trouble
Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity | Judith Butler
One of the most talked-about scholarly works of the past fifty years, Judith Butlers Gender Trouble is as celebrated as it is controversial. Arguing that traditional feminism is wrong to look to a natural, 'essential' notion of the female, or indeed of sex or gender, Butler starts by questioning the category 'woman' and continues in this vein with examinations of 'the masculine' and 'the feminine'. Best known however, but also most often misinterpreted, is Butler's concept of gender as a reiterated social performance rather than the expression of a prior reality. Thrilling and provocative, few other academic works have roused passions to the same extent.

Bailedbailed

After a struggle, I‘m DNFing this one at p73. It‘s too technical for me. A scholarly expert on the subject of gender identity I am not. I‘m tired of looking up words and trying to figure out what Butler is going for.

This one is HAAAAAARD, y‘all! I feel like I‘m looking up every other word in the dictionary, it‘s taking me around an hour to read 10 pages. Very little progress, getting a bit frustrated. 😫

Call me an idiot.

I got this lovely black cat a week ago. My daughter named it Shadow. Ghost and Shadow are getting along relatively well, for it being only a week.

I asked the woman I got the cat from twice, at least, whether it's a 'she' - couldn't check for all the hissing and clawing - the woman insisted it was a she.
Well, I had a sneaking suspicion it's a 'he'. Today, for the first time, Shadow let me have a real look and yep, it's a boy!

tricours My oldest brother had to be told by the vet when they came to castrate their cat that it was a female 😛 7y

AmyG I had found a kitten outside and we were so sure it was a girl. My son named her Ivana (he was fascinated by the Trumps...go figure). The vet said it was a boy. I forbid him to name the cat Donald. So he became George. It DOES happen all the time....said the vet. (edited) 7y
julesG @AmyG It just means I have to get him neutered, with two girls I might have been able to just let them be. We do not have to change the name. - 7y
ValerieAndBooks When we were teenagers, my sister had a pet parakeet that she named Nick, after Nick Rhodes from Duran Duran. A couple years later it laid an egg! She changed the bird‘s name to Nikki 😂. 7y
AmyG @JulesG Yeah, the neutering is a pain. George was my first cat and started spraying before I had the chance to neuter him. I have a girl now and she is just easier. 7y
[DELETED] 3803335244 @ValerieAndBooks 😂😂😂 Nikki! Love it ❤️ Hopefully you can get him neutered soon. 7y

Pickpick

Super hard read, but I mostly agree with what Butler writes here. It is an interesting and mind-opening analysis of how gender is a system that reproduces unfairness and ridiculous divisions between human beings.

azulaco This is absolute gold 😂 8y
LonelyReader The question of gender and sex is very intrinsic to the understanding of alternate gender and sexual Identity. I have read that gender and sex is not one and the same thing. I agree with @azulaco that this book must be an absolute goldmine if it digs into gender and sex issues. 8y
