Paranormal #HistoricalRomance M/M

Lucien has returned from exile in China as the new Lord Crane. Strangely, he seems to have inherited the title and a curse, for he keeps trying to kill himself. He needs magical help.

Stephen Day, magician, hates the Cranes for how they ruined his family, yet he comes to Lucien's aid. Soon the two of them battle not only the "curse" but also with their mutual attraction.

A Charm of Magpies book 1

Well, would you look at that. The first time I don't add all my reads to Goodreads and I make it into the Top 1% Readers and(!) Reviewers. 😂😂

Anyway, it's just stats and I'm not reading to outdo other people, I'm reading for fun.

I'm looking forward to my final tally from StoryGraph, which is where I tracked all of my reading this year.

Just wanted to catch up with #LittensLoveRomance but then got sucked in and read the whole story in one sitting.

Loved the banter. The mystery was well-crafted. Enough information to keep me turning the pages, but not too much so that I was bored by the foreshadowing. The snowed in manor would be a dream to visit, including the greenhouse.

Susanita I showed this to one of the librarians, and she put us both on the holds list immediately. 4d

After reading A Kilt for Christmas (https://litsy.com/p/T21oU0JLb3p2) I had to come back for more Ghost Coos (sadly missing in this book) and a bunch of Fairy Godmothers disguised as a book club of elderly women calling themselves the Book Bitches and wearing Christmas sweaters with puns.

There's a magical bookshop and the woman who just inherited it, a socially awkward man in a kilt with a hurt puffin, and lots of puffin puns.

Had the second of three MRIs this morning at 7am, which, incidentally, is the perfect time to whack up the schedule of the MRI practice when a 10-12min exam turns into a 40min exam. They found something minor but nobody told me about it at the moment and I spiraled a bit, until I read the results.

Anyway, I got myself some books, because an emotional roller-coaster is better with emotional support books.

Two audiobooks and one ebook.

Expected publication: 27 March 2025

I'm shamelessly quoting from the Afterword and Acknowledgements of the review copy I was generously granted: this is "a book about the moon turning to cheese, [...] each chapter represent[s] a day in the lunar cycle, each chapter with mostly different characters in mostly different places in the United States, reacting to it in ways specific [to] them alone"

⬇️

julesG What more can I tell you about the book? The title of the book gave me an earworm, but not in a bad way. Each chapter is different, first of all because each chapter has it's own main character(s), who might show up in one of the other 27 chapters again; but also because the style of each chapter is different, one of the chapters is a chat-log, for example.

⬇️
1w
julesG Kudos to Mr Scalzi for casually throwing in a historical detail from the 12th century that happened in a city near where I grew up. That's some weird pub-quiz trivia to include in a story about cheese or the moon.

If you have read Scalzi's work before, you will certainly like it. If you haven't read his work before, what are you waiting for?

by K. A. Merikan

Luke works at a burger joint when one evening the literal Lord of the Nocturne Court walks in telling Luke he's to marry him the next day under the full moon. Of course Luke thinks it's a prank, but soon he finds himself in a different realm about to face the altar.

Dark M/M romantasy, quite explicit 🌶️🌶️🌶️
Standalone

Mentioned this book to the #Gladstonerds and @Leniverse said she'd read the author and liked it.

Leniverse 🤣 I guess? I think what I said was I read a serial killer romance by that author and it was a great antidote to all the Xmas fluff I had been reading 😅 But actually, yes, there's a new murder romance out this year, and I'll probably read that too 🤫 2w
julesG @Leniverse tell me more about the murder romance. I think I'm done with small town Christmas fluff for this year, too. 2w
Leniverse The one I read last year was called All I want for Christmas is Revenge. A lonely hitman promises to kill the people who murdered another guy's family if he'll be his boyfriend/possession. This year's is called Ho Ho Homicidal Maniac. A guy witnesses a murder, but the killer thinks he's really cute so instead of killing him he kidnaps him. As one does 😆 2w
julesG @Leniverse OK, will check where I can get at least one of them. Thanks 2w

TheSpineView There was a lot going on in this book. Loved the various ideas that Pratchett presented in the book. My favorite was the role of media as it pertains to the government. 2w
julesG @TheSpineView I was astonished at how well the book has aged. 2w
TheSpineView @julesG It did age well. I think some things will be timeless. 2w
kwmg40 I really enjoyed this one. Coincidentally, I was reading The Golden Road by L.M. Montgomery for #kindredspiritsbuddyread and in it, the main characters start a newspaper, so it was fun to compare! As others have mentioned, the themes of the book are still very relevant today. 2w
BookmarkTavern It‘s a little alarming how well it‘s aged! Journalism and what it owes to the people, versus how to work with the government and law enforcement, it‘s a narrow line to walk. Vimes and William‘s banter remains probably my favorite part of this book. And that final confrontation with William‘s dad! I forgot just how much that moved me. (edited) 2w

Thank you, @robinb for the first Christmas card this year and the bookmark. ?

My daughter brought it in and said "You have a letter from Birmingham." and my mind went through the rolodex of people I know in the UK and who might be from Birmingham. ? Well, it was soon sorted with my 14 year old declaring that the people should have called it New Birmingham, just like they called it New York. "It's just less confusing." ??

Clegg looks at the origins of the darker Christmas traditions still celebrated today. She looks at how Carnival traditions used to tie into Christmas, at Krampus and Santa Lucia, as well as the Winter Solstice at Stonehenge. And several more in between.

julesG @jhod That's cool! Did she talk about the book in general or about one of the winter festivals? 22h
jhod @julesG She talked about the various witches who pull out your guts if you are a naughty child and replace it with straw and the merging of Halloween and Christmas traditions, and the commonality between European cultures. And basically that until the Victorians Christmas was a very dark contemplative period! I've just bought it for my friend as a Christmas present! X 21h
julesG @jhod Oh yes, the Christmas witches are in the book. They are very dark. Imagine being a child and your parents tell you to behave or the witch will have your guts. (I actually remember my grandmother telling me about the witch when I was 6 or 7. On my way home afterwards, through the dark snowy street, I was scared the witch would come for me on that 300 yards stretch between my grandmother's house and my parents'.) 21h

julesG can't stand each other, by night things look different. There's attraction, but they have trust issues. Their animosity by day turns into long talks and exchanging of views on life at night. And we know where it is headed.

For an avid reader of SFF this book didn't have many new ideas. I liked the world-building and tolerated the epic aspect of the story (I'm allergic to epic fantasy, so not a fault of the author), I didn't like that
1mo
julesG the book ends in the middle of a scene. I liked the relationship the three sisters had with each other. 1mo

MidnightBookGirl Love this edition! 1mo
ShelleyBooksie Beautiful book! I would not like that it ends in the middle of a scene! 1mo
julesG @ShelleyBooksie it's annoying 1mo
PaperbackPirate That‘s one of my pet peeves @ShelleyBooksie & @julesG ! A book should be complete in itself. I stopped reading a series I really liked because every book would build up to a big event but would end right before it happened. But your book sure is pretty! 😍 1mo
julesG @PaperbackPirate I knew it was the first book in a duology but didn't expect a cliffhanger ending. Books in a series used to have a satisfying ending and hinted at more to come, now I often feel cheated when I get to the end and then have to wait for the second half of the story fir ages. 1mo
julesG @kspenmoll @Sace @MidnightBookGirl @ShelleyBooksie - it's the UK special edition. Not signed, but lovely sprayed edges. 1mo

Pub Day was 05 November

Tao travels the country in a mule-drawn wagon and tells fortunes. She is a teller of small fortunes, larger fortunes come with consequences and so she sticks to the small ones. On her journey she makes friends with a former mercenary and a reformed thief, who are looking for a lost child, as well as an apprentice baker and her slightly magical cat.

The story is like being on a low stakes ⬇️

julesG D&D campaign. Four heroes travelling together on the quest to find the small girl that was lost. On the way they are telling each other their stories, they talk about the small and big things in life (love, culture, roots,...) and try to be better every day.

I truly enjoyed this story and would recommend it to anyone who wants to escape into a low stakes cosy fantasy world where life is good when you're making tea, baking and ⬇️

#BookMail from yesterday

This story had been on my mind for quite a while, but I never knew what the title was until @Bookwomble posted about it.

Bookwomble I'd say, "enjoy," but it's not that kind of book, so I'll say, "I hope you appreciate it." ? 1mo

The last three days were busy. I found damp behind my daughter's bookshelf on Monday. Took out all the books and knick knacks and sorted through what had to go because of mould and what was just damp.
Yesterday I moved the shelf and removed the wallpaper.

Today I filled the shelves.

Bottom right is the wall without wallpaper, just the insulation I put up ten years ago. Daughter is happy with her discoball wall.

All powered by audiobooks. 😜

Prairiegirl_reading That does not look like fun. Thank goodness for audiobooks! 1mo
Tamra Yay for audiobooks! 1mo

thegirlwiththelibrarybag What a grim discovery. Did you lose many? 1mo
julesG @thegirlwiththelibrarybag Fortunately only a few second/third hand copies. Most were books translated into German where the English copies are on my shelves. She reads mainly in English now anyways. We used the opportunity to cull some chapter books she won't be re-reading again; which are now in boxes that I'll donate. So all in all we had to throw out maybe a dozen books. I've already set a reminder in my calendar to check the remaining books 1mo
julesG again in two weeks. Which will be fun, because I get to re-arrange the shelves. 😁 1mo
AnnCrystal Yikes, good thing you discovered before it became worse 🙏📚💝. 1mo

@RaeLovesToRead mentioned the second book in the series some time ago and I thought I should check out the first.

I liked it, but it took me a long time to get into it and finish it. I had the impression that it took until past the halfway mark to introduce the many different characters, their backgrounds, and building this slightly alternate Victorian world.

I'll pick up the second book, somewhen 😉

TheSpineView Great job! Like you, I've got one book I can't seem to get into. 1mo

#TLT #ThreeListThursday @dabbe

I tend to re-read cosy, funny books during the darker months.

Top left: The Chronicles of St Mary's (🎄) short story collections and, of course, I've pre-ordered the next 🎄short story already
Bottom left: Spin-off from the Shopping for a Billionaire series, can be read without having read the whole series. Laugh out loud #RomCom ⬇️⬇️⬇️

julesG The eBook is currently for free: https://substack.com/redirect/c353c743-a998-4958-b585-b0ee45dfbea6?j=eyJ1IjoicG9...

Bottom right: Beth O'Leary's book is set in a run-down hotel around the holiday time. Story starts in November 2022.

dabbe THANK YOU! I'm making a list, and checking it twice. Thank you for sharing and making the end of this week nice. 🩵❄️🩵 1mo
