#BookReport @Cinfhen

Not certain when exactly I finished the four ARCs, might have been Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.

Busy week, made progress on my #BuddyRead - Sorcery of Thorns. Might finish it today even.

Slow process on Nevernight.

Cinfhen You finished early last week because your ARC reviews propelled me to read mine!! So thank you 😘 8h

Reading this with the young detective in my house.

I don't get the hype about this book. I cannot relate to the characters and have trouble following their relationship.

The translation is awful, which adds to the unpleasant reading experience. Clunky sentences, old-fashioned words. It makes the story seem to be set in the 80s with futuristic devices called smartphones. 😬

Crazeedi That's a shame especially when reading with your detective! 2d
julesG @Crazeedi The detective doesn't mind. Fortunately. 2d

Sunshine, warm enough to sit outside without a thick jacket. I need to clean out here, now that the scaffolding has been taken down (only took them 5 months), but not today.

First hour I have to myself all week. I'm spending it with the #audiobook. (@DuckOfDoom I'm at chapter 23 already, super sorry, it was picking up speed after chapter 19 - I promise to not read further than 23!)

The sun is shining, I might venture a few minutes outside on the (dirty and cluttered) balcony next.

#buddyread

cleoh Are you enjoying the audiobook? I tried to read the physical copy late last year and by the time I got to page 100 I had zero idea what was happening 3d
julesG @cleoh I'm doing both, audiobook and ebook. Strangely, there are some really weird differences between the two - factual differences. I think the story has a lot of potential, but it feels like something is missing, as if the book was released before it had its final polishing. Not to mention that I'm reminded of other YA books at every turn. It's entertaining enough though; just need to pace myself since I'm #buddyread -ing it with @DuckOfDoom 3d
cleoh @julesG okay, good to know! I may try it again knowing that! I find the premise super cool so I‘d love if I wasn‘t disappointed but it! 3d

To those of you who have read this book

Elizabeth gropes Nathaniel's hair when he visits the Great Library in Summershall for the first time. Why? What does your edition give as a reason?

Strangely, my ebook edition (Simon&Schuster) has a different answer to this question from the Audible version.

Anyone an idea why?

Cute contemporary romance.

They meet on the Tube, but hav never talked. Daniel musters the courage to run an ad in the "Missed Connections" section of the paper. Nadia loves this section of the paper, but needs convincing that this ad is actually for her.

Cue some more missed connections and a few detours until the HEA.

Believable plot and characters!

jmtrivera My goal is to catch up with the club some time this year! 1w
julesG @jmtrivera I can highly recommend the Audiobooks. I tend to listen to them while cooking. 1w
Iblu I have grown fond of the videos of an American YouTuber reading the whole Discworld series. I found him entertaining with his asides and emotional readings. I understand he got commissioned for producing the video of each part of any book, but they are now freely available on his YouTube channel. What about royalties to the author though? Am I right in feeling guilty about this way of listening to audiobooks? 1w
julesG @Iblu I understand that you are worried about this. I just think if there were any problems with copyright and royalties, they would have taken it off YouTube by now. I, unfortunately, can't listen to this nice fellow. He's doing a great job, but I just love the British version read by Nigel Planer (sp?). 1w

julesG Vetenari and Carrot trying reverse psychology made me giggle. 2w
Aimeesue “Sometimes it‘s better to light a flamethrower than curse the darkness.” 😂 1w
khooliha One of my strongest memories of this book is from my first read, when I told my best friend I had cried over Cuddy's death and got mocked for it. 1w
See All 13 Comments
khooliha Anyway, I love this book! I love all of the new characters introduced and I love the new phase of life Vimes gets. 1w
Gezemice @Aimeesue This one is full of quotables. My favorite is Vimes‘ Boots theory of economic inequality. 1w
Gezemice @khooliha This was my first “real” Discworld book and I loved it so much I did not stop until I read all the Watch books. This is still my favorite. Hilarious from start to end (those letters from Carrot 😂 ), the characters are awesome, one of the best Discworld plots, and there is some serious commentary on racism, hate, sexism, prejudice... even good people like Carrot have issues with the undead. Until they get to know one. 1w
khooliha @Gezemice This would be a great starter book! It's a good showcase for character development, a promise of how (most) of the series will go. My starter was The Last Continent and I think it's -technically- a bad starter, but I love it just the same. 1w
julesG @khooliha @Gezemice I read this book for the first time. My first Pratchett was Pyramids. I agree, MaA is a good starter. I'll keep it in mind for future reference. 😉 1w
Aimeesue @Gezemice I quote Vimes' Boots Theory ALL the time! Brought my kids up to live by it, when they can. 1w
Gezemice @Aimeesue I quote it often, too, although have not brought my kids up that way lol. 1w
Gezemice @khooliha Last Continent is one you kinda have to know Discworld for already... I am glad you liked it and kept reading! 1w
Gezemice @julesG Yeah, I recommend it usually as a starter, although Guards, Guards would work as well. Personally I think Men at Arms is better because more of the characters are there and Vimes is no longer a happless drunk. 1w
khooliha @Gezemice It made middle school me laugh A Lot, and Rincewind is a type of character I have always loved. It worked out! 1w

My son asked for fingerless mittens with the Starfleet insignia on the backs of the hands. And of course I couldn't say no. One done, one to go. 1) Might sound cheesy: Spending lots of time in my favourite city, London. Taking my kids there several times, each time learning something new about myself, my kids, and the big city.

2) Apart from the trackable goals, I want to try to not check Litsy every two paragraphs. 🥴

3) NYE only, lunch is lentil soup/stew. Every lentil you eat will earn you a coin in the next year.

Choke-full of interesting facts this makes a good “a chapter here and there“ book, but is rather monotonous and dull when read in one sitting.

Mehso-so

Celebrating halftime with ice-cream. #24B42020 @Andrew65 @TheReadingMermaid @jb72

Book was meh, me thinks. Suffering from middle book syndrome. Plus the usual YA tropes, including the love triangle, in a fantasy world.

299/150 (I can make the 300)

Andrew65 Going great 👏👏👏 What is about middle books in trilogies! 3w
ljuliel Heya Jules , Just checking in. I missed your last couple of posts. Wanted to make sure all is ok. 🙂. I see you have books and some ice cream. As long as you have a SPOON 🥄, you should be all set. 3w
AlaMich I have a theory that publishers demand trilogies, so authors write them, even when the story would have been better served by a duology. So they have to pad the middle book with something. 3w
julesG @ljuliel 😁 Yes, spoons we have. Although I'm not beyond using my fingers when it comes to ice-cream . 3w
julesG @AlaMich That's what I think, too. Trilogies sell more books, but often make for more boring stories. 3w

julesG @Andrew65 There's even one branch that's open on the bank holidays but unstaffed. 3w
Andrew65 @julesG Much better than the U.K.! 3w
julesG @Andrew65 I think it's a pilot project in one of the suburbs. But it is a great idea. 3w
Andrew65 @julesG It is! So many cuts in our library services over the past 10+ years! 3w

Pickpick

Believable characters who develop throughout the plot.
A plot that was, although slow at times, never boring.
I appreciated the details about, and hence research into, lettering. Made the main character so much more real to me.

Wonderful writing! I'm sure I'll read more from this author.
