Dense, worth it though to better understand the Great Lakes and the Great Lakes region.
I have whole heartedly a Michigan girl and love the Great Lakes. I like the knowledge that I got from this book and how much work is still needed to keep them protected.

My next read. I love knowing more about the gorgeous lakes that surround this mitten I live in.

I finished this a month ago while visiting one of my favorite places on Earth: Northern Michigan, particularly Leelanau County and the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. How appropriate.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ An excellent and thrilling read about the history of the Great Lakes, of man's attempt to control them in the name of trade and travel, society's fight for ownership of and access to water, the threats to our lakes, and the resilience of nature.

What are you reading this #Thanksgiving week? I'm halfway through and totally engrossed by #TheDeathandLifeoftheGreatLakes. #Nature is a powerful and awesome beast. Highly #recommend.

And I just began #TheBookWomanofTroublesomeCreek. Yes, I decidedly picked Richardson's tale over Moyes' #TheGiverofStars after hearing all the controversy. Who knows what really went down, but I know I'd rather support a fellow #Kentuckian at the end of the day.

This was a fascinating read. It occasionally moved me to outrage about fisheries management decisions; I got invested. It has the problem some nonfiction has where it repeats the same information in multiple places as if it's never been mentioned before, but that's a minor quibble.

This really is a story of ever-escalating levels of fuckery.

It's easy for me to read statements like this and say we should have learned from these mistakes, that if I had been in a position to make decisions about the Seaway (somehow) I would have made better choices, but of course there's no way of knowing if that's true. But I can still say that it seems profoundly foolish to me, here and now, seeing that people knew these specific invasive species were a huge problem and recreating the problem anyway.

"Although Tanner and Tody publicly said they hoped commercial fishing could continue at some level and that they hoped lake trout would make a recovery, they made it clear this was not their priority [...] They wanted to turn [the lakes] into a 20th-century angler playground."

This book is fascinating but so frustrating to read at times. For scientists in fisheries management to intentionally choose to further damage the ecosystem...appalling.

Fantastic book about what happens when capitalistic ambition messes with nature. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is an excellent book on a topic that will become increasingly important: clean, fresh water and a healthy system of lakes. As a native Michigander, this book left me feeling angry, sad, impotent, but cautiously hopeful. The Great Lakes are unique and valuable beyond all knowing. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This will change your view of these lakes and your drinking water: sea lampreys, alewives, zebra and quagga mussels (yikes)

I packed all my books and I ran out of things to read before moving! So I had to go out and buy this one today. 🙃

I really enjoyed this one - readable, interesting, and full of information we should all be paying more attention to. It‘s right up there with The Sixth Extinction as a must read. Photo: Lake Michigan at sunset from several years ago.

I live near Lake Erie (pic) and Lake Ontario and am concerned about the health of the Great Lakes. When asked what individuals can do, on PBS NewsHour, Dan Egan said “I think what happened for a while is a generation or two turned their backs on the lakes, and the lakes suffered, as you would expect. So, I think the most significant thing you can do is to just raise the next generation with an appreciation for what we have. #TBR

I was really impressed by how readable, compelling, and thrilling this book was. Growing up around the Great Lakes, I was aware of part of the story of invasive species, but I'd had no idea about their history and scope. Additionally, this book covers through about 2016, so there was a lot of recent information. A great book!

My colleagues went to the Heartland Fall Forum for booksellers last week. In addition to talking up the new books we have out this fall, they picked up a bunch of goodies for those of us back in the office. I picked these three. I'm most looking forward to The Driftless Reader as it is local essays and published by my friends across town at the UW-Madison Press. But the other two have been on my #TBR for awhile already! #publishingperks

Probably the best book I've read this year!

Can we just take a moment to appreciate that this fisherman is called Briney? Nevermind that we're talking freshwater here.

About a quarter through -- absolutely had to pick this up, I grew up in a village right on the shore of Lake Erie and never really appreciated the magnitude of where I was.
