The World Is on Fire
The World Is on Fire: Scrap, Treasure, and Songs of Apocalypse | Joni Tevis
5 posts | 2 read | 1 reading | 4 to read
The sermons of Joni Tevis youth filled her with dread, a sense that an even worse storyone you hadnt read yetcould likewise come true. In this revelatory collection, she reckons with her childhood fears by exploring the uniquely American fascination with apocalypse. From a haunted widows wildly expanding mansion, to atomic test sites in the Nevada desert, her settings are often places of destruction and loss. And yet Tevis transforms these eerie destinations into sites of creation as well, uncovering powerful points of connection. Whether shes relating her experience of motherhood or describing the timbre of Freddy Mercurys voice in Somebody to Love, she relies on the same reverence for detail, the same sense of awe. And by anchoring her attention to the raw materials of our worldnails and beams, dirt and stone, bones and bloodshe discovers grandeur in the seemingly mundane. Possessed throughout with eclectic intelligence and extraordinary lyricism, these essays illuminate curiosities and momentous events with the same singular light.

Pickpick

Completely fantastic writing from beginning to end. Tevis details things that range from the horrific to the poignant: nuclear bomb testing, closed factories, floods, jukeboxes, Buddy Holly, and her own life. The juxtapositions are woven together seamlessly.

This was my #doublespin for July. @TheAromaofBooks

Gratitude post: I love summer but it with it comes fire season. The top picture was taken approximately 2 years ago at 8 15 am. We woke up and thought we had landed in hell. It was the eeriest experience. We have been warned all week that the conditions yesterday and today could be the same, but this morning there is only some haze with little smoke smell. Praying for my fellow Oregonians who are experiencing more immediate danger.

Eggs I‘m grateful you are/were safe 🔥 2y
Literary_Siren There‘s a fire somewhere around White‘s Pass here in Washington. Which they‘ve closed so they can battle the fire. It was windy today and the smoke is worse. I hope all personnel fighting the blaze and anyone living in the area remain safe! 2y

Today I'm teaching a research session to the first-year writing students in this author's classes. If you want to know a good place to start with essay, Joni Tevis is a good one. She is so passionate and gets obsessed with her subject matter. Good thing she knows a librarian!

Can't get much more local than Joni Tevis! This writer of essays works at the same institution as me, I've taken her class and helped her students with research, and had Thanksgiving at her home! She is the queen of braided essays, writing about nature and interesting facts in a compelling way. Both are in #hoopla #aprilshowers #localauthor

shawnmooney Braided essays! I've no idea what they are but love the sound of them! 8y
ReadingEnvy @shawnmooney one example is combing topics like nuclear bomb testing and buddy Holly and it works!! 8y
