The Library of Unrequited Love
The Library of Unrequited Love | Sophie Divry
14 posts | 13 read | 25 to read
One morning a librarian finds a reader who has been locked in overnight. She starts to talk to him, a one-way conversation that soon gathers pace as an outpouring of frustrations, observations and anguishes. Two things shine through: her shy, unrequited passion for a quiet researcher named Martin, and an ardent and absolute love of books. A delightful flight of fancy for the lonely bookworm in all of us...

A bit of an oddball novella this one, but with lots of tidbits about French libraries.
"there was one thing they didn't manage to do, in the [French] Revolution.... the Big Catalogue. In 1789, they confiscated 12m books from the aristocrats and the clergy, and they thought they'd distribute them to public libraries. That's a terrific idea. You have to give them that. Admit it... But alas, if you want to know the rest, they never got round to it."

DivineDiana So, I wonder what did happen to those 12 million books? 🤔 3y
charl08 @DivineDiana I would guess they got sold on to rich people elsewhere, but that might just be the cynicism talking... 3y

This book was read between Dec 30-Jan 1. I rated it 2 stars on Good Reads but it falls somewhere between 2.5 to 3 stars. Not a bad book but somewhat pretentious and dry.

I loved everything about this. It was written in prose which isn‘t my usual go to read but it was perfect and easy to follow along anyways. I‘ll definitely treasure this one 💖

Talk about a Happy Valentines Day! Just happened upon a kiosk on the street from the Burlingame Public Library giving away wrapped books for a Valentines Blind Date with a book! I picked the one pictured with this clue: “A new plague causes people to burst into flame” Can anyone guess what I got?! #librarylove

The story of a librarian who poured out her frustrations and observations to a reader in a library. Her stories are tinged with sadness and bitterness, but she clearly had a strong affection for libraries and books. I really liked some of her quotes. A short story, can be read in a sitting. "So men, no, that's all over. Love, for me, is something I find in books. I read a lot, it's comforting. You're never alone if you live surrounded by books.."

'You know, in my job, there's nothing more exciting, to make you feel more wanted, than to be able to size up the person in front of you, guess what they're after, find the book they need on the shelves and bring the two together. Book and reader, if they meet up at the right moment in a person's life, it can make sparks fly, set you alight, change your life.' The super power of this librarian!

[DELETED] 2232195534 Honestly, that was the best part of my job at the library. Putting just the right book in a patron's hands. Even better was when they returned and gave feedback or asked 'what should I read next'. I miss that. 😀😀 8y

'I prefer the company of books. When I'm reading, I'm never alone, I have a conversation with the book. It can be very intimate. Perhaps you know this feeling yourself? The sense that you're having an intellectual exchange with the author, following his or her train of thought and you can accompany each other for weeks on end.' The magic of books and the pleasure of reading are communicated so well through this protagonist who is a librarian.
