The Whisperer in Darkness
The Whisperer in Darkness | Howard Phillips Lovecraft
The story is told by Albert N. Wilmarth, an instructor of literature at Miskatonic University in Arkham. When local newspapers report strange things seen floating in rivers during a historic Vermont flood, Wilmarth becomes embroiled in a controversy about the reality and significance of the sightings, though he sides with the skeptics. Wilmarth uncovers old legends about monsters living in the uninhabited hills who abduct people who venture or settle too close to their territory.

So here in LA guess where I went 🤣🤣🤣 and I spent way too much… I may have to mail these to myself in Hawaii 🤣🤣🤣

Patchshank If you do mail them to yourself be sure to tell them it's media mail. It will be a lot cheaper. 3y
Ddzmini Thank you @Patchshank I need to save money now to make up for what I spent 🤣 3y
Patchshank Yeah it's so much cheaper. I mailed my grandma a bunch of books. They didn't hear me say media mail. It was going to be like $60 to mail, but ended up being $12. 3y
Ddzmini @Patchshank that‘s awesome thank you for letting me know 🤗 3y

Finished the last two stories of this particular collection tonight, few very well known ones in this and a few obscure ones I'd never heard of before; all in all a nice wee collection. ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

Now onto Volume Two, to read the ones I've not read from there. 🐙

A blend of horror, science fiction and written in that usual Lovecraft style - cryptic, detailed, use your imagination to understand and be creeped out.

I liked the references to Cthulhu and thought it was a cool concept, thought the ending was predictable but it still gets a 3/5 moderate rating because I did like it.

Finished this one today, though I must admit I skipped my least favorite story. Not a huge fan of At the Mountains of Madness. This collection‘s a great jumping-off point for those just getting into Lovecraft.

Just started on The Call of Cthulhu, and the first paragraph resonated with me.

There are valid issues with Lovecraft's personal views which I will not reiterate because they are well documented. Speaking purely about the novella, it is more science fiction/cosmic horror than traditional horror. I preferred the first 2/3 of the story, which involve more traditional mystery/horror elements. The last third, which has more sci-fi elements, was less impressive to me. The atmosphere of mystery and terror is the main selling point.

Finished Halloween night! Strange aliens living in the hills of Vermont. What do they want from humans? A novella written in 1931, the terror is palpable! Thank you @SerialReader !

Ten more days until Halloween is perfect for the 10 issues of one of my favorite creepy stories from #serialreader - The Whisperer in Darkness by H.P. Lovecraft.

After floods reveal strange things from deep in the woods, a professor shares his near escape from the unknown to urge the public to stay away. More creepy/weird than horror & a great tale for chilly October nights! 🎃

Lovecraft is not the best writer: his prose and character-building are mediocre. However, this novella highlights his strengths and his deserved title "Father of Modern Horror." His creative mythology, of aliens that are older and wiser than us and that we instinctively fear and loathe, has a unique draw, and he does a great job of creating atmosphere and tension. Let yourself get swept into the atmosphere and you'll enjoy a great #AllHallowsRead

This book starts off very scientific and matter-of-fact, but tension builds nicely as you read along, and the ending is downright creepy. A perfect selection for Serial Reader, in my opinion. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Also, the last couple of chapters scared the bejeezus out of me. I am regretting reading them while home alone in the dark. 😱

Here's my #AllHallowsRead TBR. It's two slightly longer (but still short) works and five short stories, all available on the @SerialReader app! I don't usually read stuff like this, but y'all have inspired me! Hopefully I won't get too scared! 😂
