Martina the beautiful cockroach doesn't know coffee beans about love and marriage. That's where her Cuban family comes in. While some of the Cucarachas offer her gifts to make her more attractive, only Abuela, her grandmother, gives her something really useful: un consejo incre ble, some shocking advice.

Martina the Beautiful Cockroach written by Carmen Deedy and illustrated by Micheal Austin. This story won the Purau Belpre Award. This funny Cuban Folktale story is about a cockroach name Martina that's looking for a husband. She gains advice from her Abuela then sets off to look for true love. One thing that I really love about this story is that it incorporates both English and Spanish language. #UCFLAE3414SP18

BriannaR Being that this story is written in both English and Spanish, it'll be a good tool for students to use as RA, S, and DR. As well as UDL Strategy 5.3. This UDL can be used for both English and Spanish learners. This a link to different standards that could be used in the classroom https://martinathebeautifulcockroach.weebly.com/teacher-page.html. Martina does not know anything about being in love or marriage, and to help, some members of her Cuban family give her gifts to make her more attractive; however her abuela gives her a gift that is the most useful; a bit of very interesting advice. I think this TL story would be great for RT, because some of the best books for reader‘s theater are folktales.

AlexaDP http://mdk12.msde.maryland.gov/instruction/curriculum/reading/units/gr2_the_lang... this website has a lesson plan, that is apart of a 23 day unit that guides atudents in a discussion, that is followed by a short writing assignment. This will get the students talking and open them up to sharing their opinions on the book and what happens. #ucflae3414f17 (edited) 7y
DominiqueL I really like the varying types of books you‘ve provided. They represent so many different cultures which is important for the different students that we will teach. (edited) 7y
DrSpalding This is such a great book! You are correct that it is traditional literature and specifically from Cuba. I have been lucky enough to meet this author and she is fabulous. 7y

This TL Cuban folktale was a delightful surprise when I picked it randomly from the library for it‘s name. Retold by Carmen Agra Deedy and illustrated by Michael Austin this story is sweet tale of courtship and a wonderful choice for DR. Since there is a lot of Spanish language within I chose UDL 2.4 promote understanding across languages and EL 24 incorporate the culture & the language of second language learners in your curriculum #ucflae3414f17

farynantenucci https://martinathebeautifulcockroach.weebly.com/teacher-page.html this resource is perfect for the book as it lists lessons you can complete with your students and already has the matching standard attached. I will definitely be using this book and resource in my future classroom. 7y
jvinas2 Really cool to use a Cuban folktale as a book to post about; I love having books that talk about different cultures to expose students to! Great resource linked as well! 7y
DrSpalding Did you check this one out for me by chance? I love this book and have a signed copy that I can‘t put my fingers on right now. 7y
farynantenucci @DrSpalding No, I actually found it in the CMC 7y

One of my fave picture books...not least because you get to read Martina's full name so frequently throughout the story. #booktober #bestcharactername

Seekingtardis This book (in Spanish) is how I learned to speak Spanish with an accent!! I love it!! 😍😍😍😍 8y
LindsayReads @Seekingtardis That's wonderful! I couldn't imagine a better way! 8y
Librariana Catalina is my middle name 😊 And before marriage, I had two names and two last names I went by just like Martina Josefina. It's the whole being born in México and recognizing both parents' last names which sounds so cool when it just rolls off the tongue in a speed that makes people beg you slow down 😁 8y
