The Firemaker
The Firemaker | Peter May
14 posts | 12 read | 2 to read
A burned corpse is a disturbing mystery for Beijing Detective Li Yan, until he enlists forensic pathologist Margaret Campbell. Having abandoned a broken life in Chicago for her work, she's as determined as Li to ask difficult questions about the man's death. But some questions have answers that they'd rather not hear; facts that others are desperate to conceal. The Firemaker is the first in the acclaimed China Thriller series from Peter May, author of The Blackhouse, The Lewis Man and The Chessmen.

This thriller has a slow start and initially unlikable characters, but gives way to a good mystery. The character development along the way begins to make the characters more likable. This is the first book in a series with a Chinese police detective and an American pathologist. Peter May has researched extensively to write this series based in China. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 #clearmyshelves2024 #serieslove2024

This is my #bookspin for January.

Love the Yan and Campbell Series by Peter May set in China where two cultures collide. Seems very appropriate for #ChineseNewYear and recommend this series. #JanuaryJazz

My first Peter May book. The China series first book. This was a gripping tale. Margaret is invited to teach at a university in China for 6 weeks. She isn't familiar with any cultural differences which makes things rather difficult for her. She is asked to do an autopsy on a burn victim, since that is her area of expertise. Of course the police detective Li Yan is not happy she is involved. Then two other bodies are found that may be linked.

Crazeedi I found this book to be un-put-downable. Can't wait to read book 2. #SeriesRead2021 @TheSpineView #stackingtheseries @audraelizabeth #BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks 4y

I have 74 books in the bedroom on my “next to read” tables... Well, I better start then!

Andrew65 This was good, a very different read with a clash of cultures. Interesting dynamic between the two lead characters. 5y
Tove_Reads @Andrew65 Yes, I enjoyed it. He‘s really gotten to know the Chinese culture. I‘ve been there, I have Chinese friends, but I still struggle with some stuff. The ending wasn‘t really as strong as the rest of the book, but a good start to a series! Never read a bad Peter May book. 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I agree, he writes some great books. 5y

Went to the library... 🖕🏽happened. Weirdly enough, I‘d requested a book to my library a week ago, but turns out it was already in the library, now a week later it‘s still in transit from within the same building 🤔

I love the China Thrillers Series starring the local Chinese Detective Li Yan and the American Pathologist Margaret Campbell which are set in China. They figure good murder themes, cross cultural issues and an explosive ‘relationship‘ between the two lead protagonists. Only read the first three but itching to read the other 3.

I read this years ago when it was a cheapie on Kindle. I enjoyed the descriptions of Beijing and the cultural side of Chinese life was fascinating. A very good thriller that made me a Peter May fan!
