Fool on the Hill
Fool on the Hill: A Novel | Matt Ruff
5 posts | 13 read | 9 to read
It is a literary event when a genuinely new fictional voice comes along. When that voice achieves its newness not through a certain formal facility but through the freshness of its vision, there is truly something to celebrate. Matt Ruff was only twenty-two when Fool on the Hill was first published, but with his novel he gave us a story that won over readers of every persuasion. Not your usual first effort, Fool on the Hill is a full-blown epic of life and death, good and evil, magic and love.Think of the imaginative daring of Mark Helprins Winters Tale. The zany popism of Tom Robbinss Another Roadside Attraction. The gnomish fantasies of J.R. Tolkien. Think of these and you begin to get some idea of one of the most remarkable first novels to come along in years. In the world of Fool on the Hill dogs and cats can talk, a subculture of sprites lives in the shadows and underfoot (if youre the sensitive type, or drunk enough, you might see them cavorting across the lawn), and the Bohemians, a group of Harley- and horseback-riding students dedicated to all things unconventional, hold all-night revels for the glory of their cause. Then there is Stephen Titus George, the novels youthful hero, who somehow finds himself the main player in a story that began well over a century ago. George is a mild-mannered flier of kites, a sometimes writer of bestselling fiction, and would-be knight looking for a maiden. George will find his girl and the century-old story will provide the proverbial dragon whose slaying will sanctify their love. But it will not be a sword that fells the foe but the transforming power of the imagination.

dodgygothbint Everything is very strange but we're doing okay. Thankfully all my loved ones are healthy at the moment, and I've got some interesting library work which I can do from home. I miss all the books, though! Hope you're well and coping okay too. 4y

I was trying to take a photo of today's beautiful sunset & this crazy fool ran up into the shot, flopped down in a #Bitsy -like pose & started squirming/rolling in the snow. Gotta love my crazy dogs. 😂😂

jessberk13 How funny!! Love it! 7y
Marchpane 😂😂awesome picture! 7y
Suzze I had to look to see who posted this, I was sure it WAS Bitsy! Brr. It's cold out there. 7y

GlitteryOtters @Suzze I walked down the hill to the Whole Foods today and, OMG, between the chill and the VERY poorly shoveled & terribly icy sidewalks I was exhausted by the time I arrived at the store. And this is while it was still warmish! The next few days are going to be terrible (we're going down to Joe Louis Arena for a hockey game on 12/15 evening when it is supposed to be soooo cold, I am not looking forward to the cold!!) 7y
GlitteryOtters @Jessica @Marchpane thanks! I was trying to set up the shot & he was like "you like to take pictures of ME! Here i AM!" and he proceeded to perform for the camera! ?? Such a ham! (edited) 7y
Suzze @GlitteryOtters You need to stock up and stay in! I have only been out to get the mail since Friday. 7y
LeahBergen 😂😂😂 And I love the book title to match!! 7y
GlitteryOtters @Suzze the husband's birthday is 12/16 plus today is last day of the sales cycle, so I was in there stocking up on canned tomatoes & ingredients for his birthday feast--am making Isa's tofu ham, sweet potato soup with ginger & vanilla, and marinated potato salad plus some stuff from my Allyson Kramer cookbooks (almond tofu with blackberry sauce, apricot risotto & carrot and celeriac remoulade) & the Make Ahead Vegan cookbook (sweet potato patties) 7y
GlitteryOtters @LeahBergen it was too fitting (we live at the top of a hill on the east side of town, so it is very fitting 😂😂) 7y
Suzze @GlitteryOtters Okay, yum. Tell your husband happy birthday! 7y
britt_brooke Love this! 😂 7y
LauraBeth 😂😂😂how cute! 7y
Soubhiville Haha, how fun!!! 7y
GlitteryOtters @LauraBeth he says Bitsy is his inspiration 😂😂 7y
GlitteryOtters @britt_brooke @Soubhiville he is such a silly dog & a total ham 😂😂 7y
LauraBrook Love this! I think you should frame it both because it's a beautiful sunset and photo, and because your dog is so himself! What a hilarious and lovely shot! 7y
GlitteryOtters @LauraBrook I am thinking of making a photo book for my husband next year full of photos of this dog (he is my husband's dog--the other 2 dogs I brought to the marriage). I have so many good ones, and I think he'd enjoy the gift. 7y
