Charity Girl | Georgette Heyer
6 posts | 10 read | 7 to read
"Georgette Heyer is unbeatable."-Sunday Telegraph A young and lovely runaway alone on the road to London Miss Charity Steane is running away from the drudgery of her aunt's household to find her grandfather. Not expecting her visit, the old gentleman is not in London but is away in the country. A scandal broth in the making When Viscount Desford encounters a lovely waif searching for her grandfather, he feels honor bound to assist her; but dashing about the countryside together, the Viscount must prevent his exasperating charge from bringing him ruin upon herself...and him. In the end, his best idea is to bring Charity to his lifelong best friend Henrietta and that's when the fun and surprises begin... "It all begins when a chivalrous and rich young gallant takes pity on a pathetic poor relation in a neighboring family. Before long he is so entangled in his efforts to help her that every step he takes leads to some hilarious new confusion. The romantic conclusions are not what you may expect, but that adds to the fun."-Publishers Weekly "My favourite historical novelist-stylish, romantic, sharp, and witty. Her sense of period is superb, her heroines are enterprising, and her heroes dashing. I owe her many happy hours."-Margaret Drabble

I love the cover! This book was full of slang I was unfamiliar with but felt more lively and real than some historical fiction, I would be interested in seeing a movie to hear it in conversation. Another fun, silly situation and my first time using Libby.

Gissy Lovely cover!😍👌 3y
StaceGhost I just started reading a collection of her first four novels! I‘d never heard of her until yesterday but Stephen Fry recommended and she doesn‘t disappoint lol 3y
Chrissyreadit @StaceGhost she is a solid comfort read for me 3y

LeahBergen You get used to the Regency slang as you read more of her books, don‘t you? 😊 3y
Chrissyreadit @LeahBergen yes- but I almost felt like this was written and could be translated- it was fun and I could guess most of it- I‘ve just not read so much at once. And now I wonder how it the slang developed and differed between classes cause in this the servants used it too. I did enjoy it. 3y
LeahBergen I‘ve read that the “sporting men” of the period adopted a lot of slang from the “lower” classes. Do you have this tagged book? It has a small, but fun, glossary of Regency phrases and “cant” (ie; slang) 3y
Chrissyreadit @LeahBergen thank you!!! I just stacked it 😘 3y

Finished this #ebook which I read on #Hoopla.

Such a nice story. 🥰 Super happy Desford and Hetta acknowledged their love for each other and got engaged eight years after their parents tried to engage them.

Some of the sentences and the way they were structured were a bit difficult to read. I‘m already one who reads every word, but even these sentences made me slow down.

CrowCAH @LeahBergen my quick review. 5y
katy4peas I love Heyer and haven't read this one yet. I am also a reader of every word... Heyer uses longer sentence structures which I am not used to with more modern books, so I do have to slow down a bit sometimes when I read her. Glad you enjoyed it. I added to my pile! 😊 5y
LeahBergen Oh, I‘m glad it was a pick for you. I seemed to like Heyer more and more as I read her, so you might, too. 😄 5y
CrowCAH @LeahBergen agreed. This was my first foray into her work, so I should give her another try. 5y

Amazon Smile is giving 5% of your spend on qualifying purchases to charities until Friday 2nd November. That is 10 times the usual rate and a good excuse for buying books.

Just make sure you shop via smile.amazon.co.uk

I am a trustee of the Eusebia Hope Foundation (http://www.eusebiahope.org) which supports a home for homeless and abandoned children in Kenya, but lots of other charities use Amazon smile as well.

While shopping for @Chemi517 I found these for me. A Virago Modern classic #Virago , a hardback Georgette Heyer from 1970, a Penguin 20th century classic, and the same edition of The Iliad that my dad used at university. Which was a Penguin classic from 1956. Yes I love #Penguin editions. @PenguinRandomCa @PenguinPublishing @penguinusa @penguinrandomhouse
