Carol Ruckdeschel single handedly fought developers, the Carnegies and the Rockefellers to get Cumberland Island, "the country's largest and most biologically diverse barrier island," declared as protected wilderness. Her love for the island wildlife and tenacity as a defender of their habitat continues today.
