This is the first book written by archaeologist and broadcastor Mary Chubb about her adventures and experiences on various digs in the Near East and East Mediterranean. This story concerns her time at the site of Tell el Amarna in Egypt, the city of Akhenaten, in 1930. Written as a novel, but full of historical facts and real-life experiences.

Well, I‘m finally getting around to reading this book, about an archaeological expedition to Tell El- Amarna in the 1930s, and it‘s wonderful!

I had a newer paperback edition, and then I found this vintage edition, and I‘ve just recently found and bought ANOTHER book by this author. The bookish fates were telling me it was definitely time. 😆

I‘m sure this book was recommended to me by @LeahBergen 🙌 after i read a book about Nefertiti‘s life. This is the memoir of Mary Chubb who as a young woman in 1930 went to assist at the archeological dig at Tell el Amarna. It is a gentle, very English memoir and was a lovely read. There are a few sentences which make you flinch (re the assumption of authority/greater wisdom about another people‘s history) but thats worth consideration too. ⬇️

Centique So interested in reading archaeological memoirs after watching The Dig on Netflix! 1y
Centique PS the background art is from a piece called Leaving the Trees by Michele Bryant - which is hanging in my stairwell 💕 1y
batsy Sounds great! Is The Dig the one with Carey Mulligan? 1y

I started reading the novel Nefertiti and it reminded me of a book I was assigned to read in junior high (55 years ago, yikes!). I couldn‘t remember the title after all that time, but I did some digging in the Library of Congress catalog, and discovered the tagged book. As soon as I saw the author‘s name, I knew I‘d found what I was looking for. Hope I can get hold of a copy for a reread. It was published in the 50s.

@LeahBergen I promised I‘d show you my hardcover copy, which came with an interesting bit of ephemera. It belonged to a woman named Carolyn Fisher, who Google told me was a professor at UCLA. She apparently received it as a gift (or a recommendation) from another professor (whose name I can‘t figure out), because this letter was pasted in the back. No date, but obviously typed on an old typewriter. I ❤️ love finding these treasures in books. 😊

LeahBergen OMG. That‘s so cool! And that edition is LOVELY. 😍😍 5y

#WalkLikeAnEgyptian

In 1930 a group of 5 young archaeologists set out to excavate the site of Tell el Amarna, taking the author of this memoir with them as field secretary. Mary Chubb describes her time there with wonder, living in a house “where Nefertiti must once have walked and talked”.

TracyReadsBooks @Cinfhen Yes, I‘m here! We have a week of hosting local elementary & middle school students for a day of archaeology & then our excavation gets under way next week. Archaeology books—Amelia Peabody of course, Michener‘s The Source which was what everyone read in the 80s/90s before coming, Agatha Christie‘s stand alones set in the Middle East, Lives in Ruins which is a more recent NF look at the lives of archaeologist (& an interesting read). 6y
Cinfhen Welcome @TracyReadsBooks !!!! It must be SO HOT!!!! How long are u here for?? I read and loved Michener‘s The Source!! Almost 900 pages!!!!!!! The other book sounds fascinating 6y
